Excuse me but;National geographic photographers can be just as great, and I think they shouldn't be belittled because there a bit unknown. What matters is they are being themselves and enjoying life (It is my dream to become a ng photographer!)
I’m a retired photojournalist and have never really been that into wildlife photography. I’m also rarely impressed with photography I see on social media. Your work is absolutely stunning! I look forward to following you and seeing more.
First time I hear a pro admit on the small amount of good to great photos he can capture within a time frame. It's like most are ashamed of admitting they fail most of the time. But this guy is honest about it. Now I feel better about my fails.
But man, those 6 shots a year look out of this world. Stunning photos. I do weddings so I have to produce hundreds of good images, but its usually out of those 2000-3000 shots I do on any gig, that I really like maybe 2 or 3 photos.
I started doing weddings really cheap and reminding the clients that Im still green so there might be stuff I will miss, and they had no problems with it because the photos I did produce were miles better than anyone in my price range, which admittedly was pretty cheap.. It doesn't take long before you get the inner workings of weddings. The rest of it is all your ability, and yes, its considerably harder than people think it is. Just like everything else, if you try to do it proper. I sometimes pull 22 hrs shifts when there is a lot driving involved. And people are actually amazed when Im dripping in sweat while trying to make the shots. It is physically challenging on top bad weather etc. But hey, it pays good, and I only shoot people anyways, so Im not complaining really. That new lens or camera body is not going to buy itself.
@@Qlicky - I'm that way myself. You go on a shoot, and take tons of photos. Many of them are good, yes. But there's that small, small few (that being low single digits) that you feel are breathtaking. If you're on a shoot where you got a ton of 'great' pictures, then odds are it was just too easy of an event.
I have met David Yarrow last week. He is an inspirational person and photographer. His photos convey emotion and rises above 'let me show you what an elephant looks like".
It’s not too often I find a video on UA-cam where I can sit and watch every second of it and not be intrigued. This here is one of this videos, and I’m glad I found this.

Not most, almost all of them look the same, that's the problem. Same lenses, same focal length, same angle...boring really. But hey, it takes some serious balls to photograph a momma bear close up, with her cubs, with a 24mm lens. And what a talent on top of those cojones!

Wow. I'm lost for words. These images are sensational. You are without doubt a talented man and know wildlife inside out. Loved every second of this video. Thank you.
If you get a chance to see one of David's shows in person, do it!! His work is magnificent small, but when you're in front of one his handmade 40x60 master prints, they knock you right on your fanny. His work is the first I've seen since Peter Beard's that really moved the art forward. Impeccable composition, contrast, lighting, tonal range, printing and of course truly remarkable tributes to earth's most charismatic mega-fauna and environments.
It was the best review with photographer I ever saw! I never heard about David Yarow but from now I'm a huge fan of this person and his work. Thanks YouPic for this review!
The best advice I ever got in my photography career was to go with fixed lenses, as they will make you work/walk for good photos. And this guy took that to another level. Stunning stuff.
Just incredible!!!! So much to learn from Mr. Yarrow. I have been on safari in Africa 4 times - and now, I can't wait to go again, largely as a result of this video.
I've been making a living as a photographer for a number of decades...first as a PJ, and for a long time now working on Film sets. Anyone can be a photographer on any given day...but longevity, reputation and actually making a more than average living from photography takes a crapload of hard work and perseverance. You can have all the talent in the world but if you don't have the work ethic and dedication...the talent goes nowhere. There are many famous and highly sought after photographers who's work I personally find utterly uninspiring but they have worked hard and they have built the reputation they have...so I respect them for that. David Yarrow embodies talent, vision and a dedicated humble work ethic...and the added bonus of humility...a quality many celebrated photographers struggle to posses.
November 2019 - I had a week's vacation in Vancouver (I live near London in the UK) and much to my delight there was an exhibition of David Yarrow's work in the city. Wow ! I consider myself very fortunate to have been there at just the right time (5 o'clock, somewhere)
Steve, you videos and photos are always great, but this was a whole new level of exceptional. Thank you for posting/sharing, I really enjoyed this one a great deal.
This guy makes hundreds of thousands, but, to me, he is the only photographer who deserves it. I saw his site and wondered how he could possibly get photos like that. Now I know. I will take his advice to heart and hopefully I will get a photo that maybe, just maybe, is a fraction as good.
You should check out a guy named Clark Little. He takes excellent photographs in the ocean. He does great work. He, like Yarrow, also puts himself at risk to get those shots.
Wow! Just...wow! The word awesome is rarely used justifiably, but this really was awesome. Love the vision, the talent, the art, the humanity, the commercialism. Thank you so much.
I have been taking pictures of my children for years, mostly using a 50mm on a crop sensor. Lately been using a quite wide angle being really up close and its such a different feel. It gets so much more personal. Never heard of this photographer before but the pictures blew me away. Wide angle shots of these amazing animals. At least for photographers who understand how close you have to be to get those shots must all be amazed by this. So beautiful. And the hdr black and white editing is really cool. I'm so amazed and inspired. Thank you!
I love his work. At 8:08 it looked like he was having a plumber's moment while photographing the polar bears. He allows his humanity to come through. "It is what it is" when getting the shot. Much respect.
