To answer, in the FFL, if France goes in a foreign country to do war operations, the platoon leader asks the legionnaires coming from this country if they are okay to fight in their homecountry or not. If not, there's no punishment. It's a rule allowing not to create loyality problems in legionnaire's minds.
Excellent interview. His greatest victory was the victory over himself. Very inspiring.
Not really. He dropped out of the legion dishonorably for his 5 minutes of fame. Impulse control and ego still unchecked
The more vulnerable and honest and accountable he is, the more likable and trustworthy and sympathetic he comes across... I've been following him since his first uploads, and i've only come to respect the man more and more as he continues down this path of taking responsibility for oneself and attempting to give back to society.

My son was a para in the French foreign legion. So so proud as any parent should be! such a massive achievement for them. Was absolutely heartbreaking for me as a single mother to except that I might have not seen my boy again but once it sunk Into my head that this was "his dream" then you understand a bit more.

they were based in corsica in my day. do you know what company he was attached too as in my day there were 4, one was specialist in mountains, another was sniper and sabotage, another was aqua marine, can't remember what the 4th one was. there was another regiment on corsica who did all of the same things without the parachuting 2eme REI' think the 4th was anti tank

To be honest he doesn't talk about it. He did mention mountain or it might have been on his badge thing. Can't remember sorry. Thinking of the photos of him, he had a few in the Alps, actually he told me a story about that lol he was to lead the way and he nearly took everyone over the edge 😲😲

Can't remember the name but he was based on an island.
I was lucky because I used to speak to a few guys who had been in there before he joined, well wouldn't really say lucky as I new alot what went on which made it really hard for me, still can't completely talk freely without crying. In my heart of heart it was the worst time of my life but, hes home now safe and sound and I got a kepi lol he kept the one that's got everyone's signatures on it when he left and gave me his other, oh and I have his red towel and t shirts lol
@@ScottishXtartan i spent time attached to 13eme DBLE in Djibouti. saved a lot of money there. i know they had 5eme RMP based in islands near Tahiti, also had a base on an island chain near Madagascar but can't remember which regiment it was

I was in the legion from 1986 to 1999 now I'm in UA as a dog handler and looking for cadavers, I'm not kidding if I say it's a culture shock for western soldiers who come here, you say you wanted to go to UA but changed your mind!! good choice you made!! because even as Navy Seals, Legionnaire or whatever you are with good military training and enough experience you are not safe here,, this is a meat grinder several hundred thousand soldiers have died within two years and more than ten thousand civilians, without criticism of you and with all respect for your experiences and others who have participated in modernized wars against underdeveloped countries, but no one can imagine with the wildest imagination what a war like this is like, only people who were in Stalingrad in 44 and 45 would be able to understand what is going on here.

I left the British Army infantry after 3 years back in 1983 and 3 months later went over to Paris France Fort De Nogent but unfortunately I changed my mind before being sent down to Southern France for selection and training. Anyway I just wanted to say The French Foreign Legion looked way tougher than British Army and that’s including The Paras and marines who I did many field exercises with! I’ve seen Navy Seals and I wasn’t so impressed I think the French Foreign Legion guys look tougher and are tougher for 2 main reasons! 1. The recruit is not even in the country he was born in and 2. You have to learn a foreign language French fast also 3. You are 100s or thousands of miles away from your family and friends and don’t get leave to see them soon like you do being a soldier in your own country

I’ve been following you for a while James and you are getting quite good at the interviews. You ask some good and awkward questions that caught the guy on the back foot a few times, not just pandering to the interviewee.

Been an ex legionnaire from 2013 - 2018 it’s a pleasure to hear and see James having this guy on.
Put me back in the mindset of who I was and why I did what I did amd that was to fix myself from been broken.
Will always owe a debt to the legion for opening their doors to me and giving me the experience and skills that I needed

Were you also a deserter , most Legionaries who lived up to their contract don't look upon runaways to favorably , granted he had a good reason to ya know UA-cam just couldn't wait 6 months to he was discharged.

Please someone that doesn't exist, man, I can relate to that shite, what a great way to describe your indescribable feelings, good chat, wish him all the best.
i served in la legion etrangere in the early 80's, listening to his account it seems to have changed a lot. we were not allowed to leave france, in fact you could not leave the town you were based in unless corporal-chef or higher, did my basic training in castelnaudary, and after joined 1ere R.E.C based in orange in south of france, saw action in lebannon and chad. at that time everybody after selection did the same basic training, and then joined one of the regiments and trained further with them. back then out of the 5 years you had to serve 2 years overseas. the question was asked about fighting for france, and although you are legionnaires they see it more about fighting for the honour of the legion, they never surrender. legio patria nostra sums this up, the legion is our country because back then until you had served 4 and a half years and got french citizenship you were stateless
I know a few guys who were in, in the 80s, wow!! it was really hard then! It is no where near as bad as the 80s. Think you can only go to the jail now for no more than 40 hours. You don't get them beating each other to death now either lol god I don't know if I should be writing this hmmm

@@ScottishXtartan yeah it's softer now, but then i met someone while i was there who was in the original parachute regiment that got disbanded because they mutinied against de gaulle. he joined up again under another name. it was far harder in his time then mine

A lot of the guys seem to like the challenge. Although I did hear that a lot who are being made to be s uicide b ombers go all the way there to avoid doing that!! Even heard that they arrive with nothing not even shoes on their feet 😥 then you obviously get the ones that don't make selection, heartbreaking!!

I served with a lad called Leyland who served in the Legion, prior to the British Army.
Profound insights, for example, low self esteem results in self destructive behaviour. Also, some of his descriptions of the French Foreign Legion, and its management of the Russo Ukriaine war, and granting Ukrainians leave to fight for their country of origin. Thank you.

My only curiosity is I wonder if this way of life makes it difficult to establish or maintain relationships? Is it the case of waiting until you get out before starting anything serious or long term, that structure I'm assuming is needed greatly to remain focused

I think the main point of Taylors journey as many men is “trying” to be successful vs being successful and that’s much of his story
I was US Navy and when I got out I felt lost. You go in alone and bond with other loners. Then you get out and you are alone again
This guy's story is extraordinary, other than a SEAL becoming a Legionnaire. His journey is what makes it interesting, one I think would make a great biography and movie.
I knew he was a Wes Watson client as soon as he started talking about fitness,diet,spirituality etc. using same words etc….. IYKYK
