I like it!! I really think the 8 will be faster. The issue in autox is the 7.5 has some boost lag to tend with. Maybe we need to get the R32,7.5 and 8 up there!
@@HumbleMechanic Would love to see a family brawl, no one is doing this stuff like you two! I always suspected that the harder you tune these small 2 liters, the less effective they become for "close quarters work" in other words tight auto cross. On a bigger race track and of course a drag strip, there is much more time spent on WOT. Do OTS tunes focus at all at increasing power over stock in the areas "under the curve"? I'm pretty sure JB-4 is even inactive until WOT, so not much added there to auto cross situation.
@@kegfreak3728 Well no one doubts a full stage 2 or even just stage 1 mk7.5 R would maul a stock mk8 on the street and strip- they're not THAT far removed. The other differences (biggest would be the Haldex 5 vs the Magna rear end dynamics) are another story.

When I used to Auto-X till the late 2000's the fastest time of the day was always between a Mazdaspeed Miata on slicks and a prepped STi. I dearly miss auto-xing my Corrado!

The mazda mx5 has a good chassis. They like the tight tracks. In the Uk they do well at track days on somewhere like Knockhill (very short, tight and twisty)
I get the comparison thing here but you guys completely omitted the most important factor; the rubber. It makes a HUGE difference in an autocross so unless you're both running identical tires, the comparison doesn't mean as much. Loved the video and as an 8V S3 owner it was really informative. I can't wait to get out there and see what mine can do on the track.
the beginner improvement was probably more due to how much a new driver can improve. You being more experienced, it will be harder for you to improve. I'd put money on it that if he drove the R first and then the gti, he probably be faster in the GTI as well
100%. I’ve been autocrossing for a decade and we’ve seen it for years. One other common thread is for a new driver to share their car with a veteran for a couple runs and ride along. By the 2nd or 3rd run the new driver begins copy-catting the vet and picking up huge time advantages. ^^ I did that in a Focus RS ;-).

Call me crazy but with the slight drop and wheel change I’m liking the styling of the GTI more than the R. Still think the mk7/7.5 wins this but the mk8 GTI is really growing on me.

Times for you guys didn’t look that bad, I don’t know if you guys were on 200tw tires, which the MazdaSpeed were. Also those bigger rims on the GTI will definitely slow it down. Usually from GS to DS my GTI is usually around half a second slower. But the Golf R definitely will reward a non experienced driver. Great seeing the R and GTI out on a course. Would be interesting to see the difference between your 7.5 R and the MK8 R
You definitely forgot to compare tires between the two. Tire choice and pressure is HUGE for autocross. Also am I seeing things or does the R have amber brake lights?
More like Volks racing. I bought some G2s and shed close to 15lbs each corner. Made a huge difference in braking into turns (later) acceleration ( sooner).
Did you guys stay in ‘ESC sport’ entire day? I imagine the general trend of your results wouldn’t change, but curious how your quickest times and levels of fun would be affected. Thanks for the video 👍🏻

Ohhhh no! Smoked by a Miata! 😆Strength to weight. It's all about strength to weight. Which is why I was kind of rooting for the GTI (and not just because I own a MKV). Disappointed, but not surprised.
this was actually pretty cool to watch, i really want to know how fast my 99.5 jetta tdi would do, torq app says it has 72 hp, but it does have lowering springs + koni shocks/struts. and a thick rear sway bar. so basically you can turn soooo hard with no body roll. only problem is on the highway it bounces a lot

I have a issue with my Mk7 with 100,000 miles. A misfire on cylinder 3 only, misfire is only on idle. Did compression test 190 on 1,2,4 and 160 on 3. Changed spark plugs, coils, injectors, and did a carb clean. Any help on what it could be the issue would be appreciate it.
The GTI needs lighter wheels and I'm sure you know that tires are everything in AutoX. Definitely looks like you both had a blast out there. I absolutely love doing AutoX in my GTI. It's definitely become one of my biggest passions in the past year. 😎🙌🤘
Nice work boys! It's been a long time since I've raced in autocross. It's such a good learning environment as it's so driver intensive. Anyway, two sweet cars you guys got!
I'm definitely an R guy but the front facia is a big let down this gen. R's never get the driving lights and the GTI has a really killer look would of preferred a more exaggerated GTI grill for the R in place of the moustache styling the have goin on. That said I'd still take the R if I was to choose from the two, AWD and rear dif are the main factors.
The R has a significant advantage due to the AWD....also, got spanked by a RWD Miata by more than the difference between the two cars VW's. As always, it proves the the fastest mod is the driver upgrade. Along those lines, serious kudos for making the point that the R is the car a beginner can jump in and drive faster. Totally valid, useful points since not many folks have dozens of hours of track time or hundreds of laps around the vindictive cones.
That miata was also properly prepped, modded for autox.. LOL but you are 100% spot on. DRIVER MOD(fwiw, his runs were also end of day where it was much drier.)
@@HumbleMechanic Mine was absolutely not knock and either of you guys. We do it all the time in our 24 Hours of Lemons cars in that there are a few known, very fast drivers that still will not kill your endurance car...we send them out for a 30 minute stint and by lap 3 or 4 they have bested our fastest time in 14 hours of racing that track. I was indirectly trying to encourage folks to just get more track or (if that is what you are into) autocross time. If you platue, get some instruction. Vehicle mods make the car theroretically faster but driver mods make it actually faster. When I raced motorcycles the ratio all the faster riders that were still privateers used was 10:1...spend $10 on track time and instruction to every $1 in upgrades if you want to go faster.
That was so cool. The R the better car all around and the weather didn’t help the GTI. Kudos to both of you…but i think Paul needs some more experience 😋😋 in AutoX
Get rid of the dual mass flywheel in the mk4 r32 and stiffen up the motor mounts and slap stiff coil overs on then run em in the quarter or eight and you tell me if the mk7 and mk8 r32 golf is faster than the new r32
100% stock mk7/8 will be faster in either of those situations. Hands down not even close. I own a mk4 r32,7.5R and 8R the mk4 is considerably slower in the straight line situation. Like not even close.
Sorry I just gloat on about the mk4 chassis that’s because I was a technician at trans ocean Volkswagen of Pasadena California when the mk3 and mk4 were new.

Your math was off with your times. Golf R 45.925, GTI 46.351, difference of .426. Extremely close considering the AWD and slippery conditions.

There is a guy who runs his GTI in our PCA AutoX and is usually in the top 30-40%. It's so quite it makes you think it is slow.

What tires were you running on the cars? They make a huge difference especially in the wet.

Get rid of the dual mass flywheel in the mk4 r32 and stiffen up the motor mounts and slap stiff coil overs on then run em in the quarter or eight and you tell me if the mk7 and mk8 r32 golf is faster than the new r32

100% stock mk7/8 will be faster in either of those situations. Hands down not even close.
I own a mk4 r32,7.5R and 8R the mk4 is considerably slower in the straight line situation. Like not even close.
As long as that mighty 24v is sitting solid with stiff motor mounts to keep that mighty German vtec engaged it will be a force to reckon with.
Strong dog bone mounts and cheap stiff coil overs and polyurethane bushes and the mk4 is the best
Sorry I just gloat on about the mk4 chassis that’s because I was a technician at trans ocean Volkswagen of Pasadena California when the mk3 and mk4 were new.
