I feel like Ashton's "everything hurts, all the time" is very unsung (and appreciated) invisible illness representation. I'm a chronic pain sufferer, one leg and my lower back, they haven't not hurt to some degree for 15 years, and the pain for sure doesn't just stay in those two places, it spreads and it takes a toll. I think I can tell Tallesin knows someone like me irl too, someone who's in constant pain. But that it's not done for A Bit, or just "flavour", that it's a literal statement, just, a fact; "everything hurts, all the time", I actually genuinely appreciate that kinda rep honestly. The likelihood of Tallesin Jaffe reading this is just next to zero, but I hope some day I can thank him for it
@@princessblazena mm, being in pain is our "normal" (which also hilariously makes other injuries harder to detect and/or treat), so we get good and seeming absolutely fine (FCG's "what, /all/ the time?"). I don’t know if this was ever brought up but I just had a thought given how paranoid and “Batman from Batman Beyond” Percy is becoming. If Percy’s life with Vox Machina went differently, he could have ended up just like Eshteross; alone, paranoid and surrounded by boobytraps.

God, that tower....that thing is definitely coming down with the next pull, and I have no idea how the hell Sam was so reckless and lucky with it every time.

The paint was called "Scheele's Green", not only was it in paint and dyes, it was used in sweets (candies) and in candles, you can imagine the problems this coursed.
And it was in FLOCKED wallpaper, which would rub off when touched, so people would INHALE it. AND it was used to dye fabric, and was able to be absorbed through the skin when it got damp - like with perspiration. It was popular in ball gowns for dancing in.
I think FCG’s southern accent and Imogen’s southern accent are VERY different. Imogen sounds something closer to Texas, while FCG sounds like he’s from Kentucky, or somewhere close. Edit: I was unclear about where I thought FCG was from. That caused some confusion.

@@musclecat1005 They abused Essek so hard. No really, like 15 yr old teens who could almost drive a vehicle, but weren't allowed to. They found the one friend with a car and created a co-dependent relationship with as much, much older man who desperately wanted connection and hung around with teens. Grrr!
I bought a big car because I wanted to be that person, and within a year I was keeping my camping gear in it full time so I didn't have to be that person.
I appreciate the answer to the cast not playing their characters from Campaign One. I admit I was one of those people that wondered why the cast couldn't play their original characters. I still think it would have been cool and would have brought a lot of fun nostalgia, especially for everyone who started following critical role with campaign one. At the same time, I respect Matt playing the campaign one characters as a way of not bringing confusion to the viewers, especially at the chance that a lot of people started with campaign 2. In the end, you gotta do what's best for your table and based on the response from Matt and the cast, that's what they did.
yea i think the want for them to play is our nostalgia talking but if you look at it objectivly its weird cause it would be hard for them since they would need to switch between playing 2 different characters and couldnt really get into there own characters mindset properly. And if Marisha played keyleth it wouldnt have been as hype for her to return to the table for that short moment where they talked to her and then when she was ressurected
As someone who became a Critter because of starting with Campaign 2 (& who is, thus far anyway not that far in to catching up with 1) I personally wouldn't have any confusion over the cast effectively having conversations with themselves by playing 2 different characters. In saying that I do understand why Matt is playing them & not the cast. Oh & I recognize that this is just my opinion & others might differ.
Also, it would be spoilery. Their C3 characters wouldn't have genuine reactions already knowing the plot through their C1 characters' preset responses. They wouldn't be playing D&D, they'd be performing a play.
Honestly the idea of them playing their old characters never really crossed my mind, they’re NPCs now and shouldn’t really be played for all the same reasons normal NPCs shouldn’t be played. Honestly we’d probably have never gotten the awesome moment of Talesin arguing with “himself”, or at least not really.
I like that there’s a character with chronic pain in the story. I’ve always wanted to see that explored but I never have that in my characters because usually I try to escape from my own chronic pain with fibromyalgia when I’m making up characters to play
My mom has fibro. I know what people with fibro go through, because I see the pain with my mom. It hurts me, because I want to help my mom, and I can't.

I'm not certain which corner of his mind Matt pulled that Franco-German neo-expressionism exestial noir bit at the beginning, but it totally caught me by surprise and made me laugh more than I thought I would going into the first minute of a Four Sided Dive video
I totally got Percy's reaction. This creepy undead looking corpse is a vessel for the necromancer that murdered his childhood family. And now someone wants to do a resurrection ritual on it. In the middle of that same home, where his wife and kids now live. Of course he is going to be like fuck no.
Marisha finds a way to create near immortal characters. Keylith ages very slowly, Beau doesn't need food or water to live and Laudna will probably never age
Ironically, I'm pretty sure the endgame of Laudna is to become human again. So, in a way, her "ride into the sunset" scenario is to get her license to die back. Hope that helps.
I always associated the name Laudna with laudanum: which is a old-timey calming and analgetic drug containg about 10% of opium dissolved in alcohol (which means it's obviously reeally destructive if used often) Also it has many varying uses in fiction, but most memorable for me is how laudanum represented in the game "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" -- in gameplay it's a healing potions, but it probably did some brain damage to main character on the path to titular affliction of the amnesia
@@princessblazena heyy, good looking out. I might've missed or didn't get to it yet. And by the way Marisha puts it like there's something more specific that hasn't been revealed about this name choice. Like some exact story - fictional or true
@@davidgomes4408 one of modern uses is kinda disturbing but helpful, and the other is a bit sus (because opium is probably not the best way to counter a case of diarrhea). In the situation when during pregnancy a woman was exposed to opiates, a newborn would experience withdrawal symptoms - then the diluted laudanum drops come in, giving a baby substinance of about 1/125000 gram of morphine per 3 hours until the simptoms are clear Spooky
Ooooh, theory: it’s a Crazy Jane (from Doom Patrol if you don’t know) situation where Laudna is an alternate personality that manifested to protect the original personality of Matilda in her time of isolation.
Laudna didn't have the specific childhood trauma to cause that. (Dissociative Identity Disorder is a real thing in real life, and Crazy Jane got it right that it results from persistent, repeated traumas in your childhood, like constant abuse of any kind. Mathilda was bullied a lot, but her parents seemed a decent enough support system to help her in her childhood. Crazy Jane specifically has D.I.D. and I highly doubt that Laudna/Mathilda has that)
@@Hey-Its-Dingo I mean, being alive during a blood-filled insurrection, watching your hometown crumble into a dark age of undeath and then being killed would probably do it
@@rosiecooper8030 From the evidence we have, Laudna was too old when the Briarwoods took over for it to have that effect on her. Laudna was around the same age as Vox Machina when her family went to the banquet, so she was close to the same age as Percy when they took over, and according to studies, and the accounts of every DID system that has been interviewed, the cutoff age for DID development is 10 at the very latest. Sorry, I take these topics very seriously, and Laudna just doesn't fit at all.
Anyone notice a trend with Sam’s characters is that they all collectively seem to have this pathological need to help people or at the very least put others problems before addressing their own? With Scanlan it was with Vox Machina until he had his breakdown and did some soul searching. Taryon wanted to prove to his father how capable he was, before realizing that perhaps that’s not something he needs to prove to his father but rather himself through VM. Nott/Veth was always bringing up support for whatever Caleb/Bren needed. Then there’s FCG whose whole purpose in life was to help others not worrying about himself because he felt everyone else seemed to have that spark of life, he thought he lacked but now knows he shares with his friends.
I noticed the trend as well. Combined with his out of character antics, I wonder if Sam possibly had something happen to him in his younger years & there was no one there to help him when he needed it.
The fact that Taliesin knows about Spaced gives me so much joy 37:44 I've been told that when my great, great aunt was a young she worked at an Arsenic Calciner; they would heat Tin ore to drive off the Arsenic and Sulphur. The smoke would leave deposits along horizontal chimneys and her job was to crawl inside after they'd cooled to scrape off the refined Arsenic and Sulphur. Their personal protection consisted of cotton wool nose plugs, soaked handkerchiefs and clay smeared on any exposed skin! There are still spoil heaps and old mine workings nearby that are so contaminated that almost nothing grows on them.
The cut here at 1:26… I’ve watched it like 10 times now and I keep bursting out laughing every time. Edit: Marisha talking about the flower shops reminds me of the same thing happening with young girls who would paint this glow in the dark pain on watches (it glowed because it contained radium). So to get the fine detail these girls would put the brush in their mouth to give it a fine point (since radium shared properties with calcium it would get inside of bones) and this lead to several people actually losing their jaws completely. Which of course the companies were able to just completely erase long enough to not be charged for it.
This is a minor conflation of 2 very similar situations: Radium based paint was indeed used in the way you describe but the effects were that of radiation poisoning. The people losing bone structure and frequently their entire jaw were coating match heads in phosphorus, the condition was known as "phossy jaw"
@@ZebedeeXVI this isn't quite right--the radium girls also experienced jaw degradation because they licked their paint brushes to get a finer point. This fact is actually important, since it's one of the reasons the companies were able to allege the girls actually had syphilis. They had jaw necrosis, rotting teeth, and at least one woman's jaw did fall off before she died. The condition was know as "radium jaw".
the fact that we got a PolyMachina conversation about a Vex-Percy-Keyleth throuple 10 minutes into the episode brings me great joy 9:39 is where the convo starts
Just in case, spoiler C1&2: I think one part of why Sam is playing an automaton this campaign is so Matt can't kill his kids anymore. Also I love Matt and this crew. They are awesome.

@@poe_slaw It'd be closer to getting them as non-find-familiar familiars in fifth edition. 5es familiar system is VERY different than previous editions, the only similarity a chainlocks familiar has is that they can use the expanded list for stat blocks for what shape and abilities the familiar has. It's still not a psuedodragon in 5e, just psuedodragon shaped, you dont need to roll, and your alignment doesn't matter (all excluding dm ruling, ofc, just by RAW). It's closer to getting them as a familiar without the spell, forming a bargain or deal of some sort for it to serve you, since your intentions and actions still have to be close enough to its so it doesn't just leave you.

I love the Nott and Taryon match up role play scene - literally THE BEST !!

I would definitely read the autobiography "How I Do This" by Matthew Mercer
Somehow I Manage To Do This
@@davidcurry5240 lmaoo strong the Office Michael vibes 👏👏
Omar didn't want the snuggles, he was after the cookie!
100%. "What the f&ck is up with this, I don't want to be picked up"
The cut here at 1:26… I’ve watched it like 10 times now and I keep bursting out laughing every time.
The people losing bone structure and frequently their entire jaw were coating match heads in phosphorus, the condition was known as "phossy jaw"
radium girls! read that book a few years ago and the descriptions of how their bodies literally started falling apart have haunted me since then
@@ZebedeeXVI this isn't quite right--the radium girls also experienced jaw degradation because they licked their paint brushes to get a finer point. This fact is actually important, since it's one of the reasons the companies were able to allege the girls actually had syphilis. They had jaw necrosis, rotting teeth, and at least one woman's jaw did fall off before she died. The condition was know as "radium jaw".
the fact that we got a PolyMachina conversation about a Vex-Percy-Keyleth throuple 10 minutes into the episode brings me great joy
9:39 is where the convo starts
And of course Sam was the one who put that out there.
Ngl, I'm always here for PolyMachina or PolyNein!
ngl, "How do you want to live this?" is a fantastic title for an autobiography.
I loved Marisha’s run after she won the game. Just exuding Laudna.
Dani: Taliesin no
Me (and probably Sam): Taliesin YES
Just in case, spoiler C1&2:
I think one part of why Sam is playing an automaton this campaign is so Matt can't kill his kids anymore.
Also I love Matt and this crew. They are awesome.
Spoilers for C1 and C2
Unless he has robot kids from the Age of Arcanum and Matt has already killed them and we just don't know it yet. FCG could have had an entire family. Maybe we'll get to Aeor eventually or run into Devexian and unlock more memories...
So nobody is gonna mention Matt's perfect Werner Herzog impression, really?
I am spending this episode watching Omar and the fire place...
"OOOO - flashy sticks!"
Matt, thank you so much for that intro. It was exquisite.
Sam: “Now, my character, when we someone else gets a natural 20, I get a little bonus”
I confess, that’s not what I thought the last syllable was gonna be. Dirty brain.
So Keyleth supplies Percy? D'you think they have a set of matching bonsais for that? After all, you only need a big tree if you're going to send *people* through it... ;)
Keyleth's weed would be the stuff of legends
@@Heritage367 Wait until Keyleth meets Caduceus...
@@Heritage367 Amazing take. That gets me thinking about all the possibilities, too. Just imagine Keyleth taking a fat rip off an awakened bong, turning into an eagle, and cruising over the mountains at sunset. It'd be absolutely sublime.
You really think they wouldn't send it through the sun tree and like magic there's always a tiny bit missing on the other side??
@@Drekromancer this is one of the many reasons I love druids ❤ 🦅
For those who may have missed it: Matt recently did a great 1-hour interview on the channel "Alanah Pearce" titled "va101: Critical Role, Overwatch, Cyberpunk & Attack on Titan's MATTHEW MERCER! | Voice Acting 101". (not linking in case that runs afoul of automatic comment moderation)
Thanks for the heads up. :)
Marisha and Matt just casually holding hands is so cute. It's just so wholesome. The whole group is so wholesome.
I love that Matt is wearing a Heilung shirt - their music is awesome and unusual, and I've definitely used it while DMing my own games. It made a perfect backing track for Yester Hill in Curse of Strahd.
I love how both of the two most recent 4-Sided Dives have ended with something Mercer-based. Last month's, he destroyed L.A. as the trash robot, and now the "Mercer is always watching". XD
i think Taliesin could make a whole series on like Percy post VM campaign
If there are any novelizations about it, he's going to input like half the material.
@@elbruces That's still a solid 750 pages worth of stuff.
also petition for omar to host the next show
I'm living for Matt's "Slightly sassy, slightly nihilistic german" character.

29:37 Nice to see the nod to 1E, where a lucky roll on Find Familiar could get the caster a Brownie, Pseudo-Dragon, Imp, or Quasit, depending on which Law/Chaos, Good/Evil caster alignment they had.
What they are describing sounds like Investment of the Chain Master from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything so this in 5e as well
@@poe_slaw It'd be closer to getting them as non-find-familiar familiars in fifth edition.
"Why Are You Like This"? The hit game competing against 'What The Fuck is Up with That"?!
i'm very proud of myself because for the first time there are no unwatched videos on the channel because i'm all caught up on campaign 3
It is a strange feeling being caught up on critical role
welcome :)
Achievement unlocked!!
Good job. Now you can share our agony of having to wait an entire week for a new episode :)
You are awesome! And I think you should be proud. I have fewer than 15 episodes left of Campaign 1 and I'll be caught up on all three campaigns.... But I still have all the one-shots and side content. 😅
what I think the captions were supposed to say at 48:30 : "... ruined by Sam and"
what the captions actually said: "... ruined by salmon"
I don’t know about pics of Nat 20s, but I do wish Taliesin had a pic of the 0 with advantage he rolled during the Jrusar Party. 😂
Love 4-Sided Dive, but I also love Marisha's outfit a lot. The dead tree on the shirt is a super cool touch.
The question asking and answering at the same time is my FAVOURITE part of this episode omg
Sam does one-man-shows it seems when he does the sponsor ads at the beginning of episodes. They are often wonderful.
I am trying to concentrate on what Marisha is saying about the backstory of Matilda.. but at the same time OMAR IS ON SCREEN EVERYTHING ELSE IS IRRELEVANT
Let's get it!❤
Also, wood on wood action going there. Three trees died for that lmao!🤣
Why am I not surprised in the slightest that Taliesin is familiar with Jan Švankmajer's Alice?
Good job on spelling his surname!
My list of "stuff to check out some day because Taliesin Jaffe mentioned it" keeps growing. I have yet to regret pursuing any of those leads. (Not all become my favorites, but it's always an interesting journey!)
@@Heritage367 Thank you. Most people get my surname incorrect; so I usually triple check when I say or type that of others.
Guys how awesome would it be if laudnas new patron was the sun tree itself. Matt could make a custom subclass for it, it is ancient, it seems to have some sort of power to it, and it is a symbol for an entire people
That's kind of the vibe I got from the episode, given how she acted about it after she was brought back. I wish they'd discussed it in this show though.
@@elbruces it could be something that was still in the works when they filmed this episode.
Props to Taliesin making mention of Jan Svankmajer's Alice in Wonderland. If you are familiar with the Brothers Quay animation from the 90's, he was a major influence for them.
I'm absolutely loving how Matt has a Heilung shirt. So cool!
I can't express how awesome it is that Matt is wearing a Heilung shirt! It really makes sense that he would listen to this amazing band. If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and have a listen!
