I would say the seeds taste similar to peanuts. It's also excellent for treating Nettle stings. Just screw up the whole plant and rub the juice all over the sting. Being so wet, it's also good for washing your hands, and if it has the same properties as the related Jewelweed then it will also have anti-fungal properties.

You'll find dock leaves always grow within twenty or so metres of stinging nettles...nature's way of balancing the scales.

@@billyandrew Dock leaves are a placebo. Broad leaf or rib wort plantain may help stings.

We have a field full of them next to our river. Never knew it was invasive! Looking forward to doing a bit of gardening now then

Much appreciated for your knowledge on this plant.. I've been contemplating gather/slashing a few away for the local habitat!
"But I have come across some spots in season where our wondrous boletes hide under them for shade!"
    Forage on strong🍄

I have been told that it can actually grow from its pickings (not just the seeds) which means if you pick it you have to discard it as hazardous waste. Would appreciate your opinion on this :)

Sorry I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me with this plant. I've had a quick look at a few sites and couldnt find anything on it.

Do the paired top leaves require cooking or can they be eaten raw?
Is _astringent_ the word you were looking for to describe the sherbet like aspect?

    • @Eueueyw
      @Eueueyw 4 роки тому +1

When raw it contains raphides which can irritate your mouth if you eat too much, I think they’re much better cooked like spinach anyway.

I have heard that this plant is high in "minerals" (no more specific information was given) and that it should only be consumed in limited amounts.
    Anyone have any better information/link?

*copied from eat weed page on HB*
      safety note
The plant is exceptionally high in calcium oxalates.
There is also an interesting discussion about eating any other parts of this plant except the seeds. The author, Robin Harford, seems to have done a lot of research on this plant and states that in its natural environment the locals only eat the seeds he cannot find any information or anything recorded of any other part of the plant being consumed by them.

The word invasive gets thrown around lol Lots of our native plants are invasive they do not like them either All are good for bees and wildlife, including rare water voles seed eating birds etc I know an area where Himalayan Balsam has naturalised I have been going there sinse I was a child It has not taken over yet, There are stll Bullrush Marsh Marigolds and all sorts. 15 species of native bumble bees Honey Bees and Butteflies have come to depend on this plant in some areas. Imagine some one going in your supermarket and ripping out all the food lol Its been in the UK sinse 1840 its now 2023 it has not taken over yet, How many more centuries will it take to wipe out other plants lol

I feel a bit sorry for them. Must be quite scary being miles away from their native homeland.

So is this plant OK as long as its not near a river.. I would rather have this plant than dandelions and stinging nettles..... What's your opinion...

You risk a very hefty fine if you encourage it growing in your garden
