First of all i was not sure about this song because it's very far from ordinary songs out there but i gotta tell you this is a masterpiece! So many turns and emotions.
Style of discordant instrumental beginning is Charles Mingus; start of song is Harry Nilsson Christmas song; "just another wish, just another dream, just another witch, comforts you when you die" is done with Scott Walker intonation; adding show tune instrumental breaks is Van Dyke Parks "Song Cycle"; piano bits are Lou Reed "Berlin"; vocal style is Mott the Hoople.
SO, all this here is taken from others; no congrats necessary. It is still very good but it should be known who the greats were that thought all this up before Foxygen cribbed it from them. Credit where credit's due.
that doesn't make much sense. what's the deal of picking something from other artists? I don't see the problem. Every band has their influences, it's not a copy, it's a reference. a mix of references, and they are extraordinary putting them together and sound incredible
hmm okay, you talked about Harry Nilsson and his christmas song, i really don't see the connection, there's not a single part of the song that's copied from there. Your argument about Scott Walker doens't make much sense too, because you could tell the same thing about every singer, that the intoation is the same as whoever. The piano bits you talk about are'nt also a copy, i've listened to the song, and you tell me what part is copied. Man they are great what's the deal? Always trying to find something wrong...
i want to hear sam's solo album (his UCLA session - c'mon !) more than anything as it sways from the (presumably) more ornate Rado-curated official Foxygen records/projects/this and that. however, I will take anything from the two x
I want to see them perform this one on late night television. With a big ass choir. Maybe Fallon. Would be epic, especially in these times.
they played on conan o'brien's show
honestly, WHAT THE HELL. beautiful. terrific. genius.
simply WOW

The Drunken Bear Believe me, there is much stranger music than this haha
When Sam is sober they sound really good
One of the beat songs I've ever heard

It's credit where credit's due. When the bits are so close to the original as to be almost exact, it makes them copies not influences.

Magnificent. Thank you.
just the best thing i've heard in music in the decade
I’m glad Sam didn’t go crazy in this one. A very nice live version.

When he hits that high note on "Americaaaaaaa", he sounds like Noël Coward! I'm not saying I don't like, though.
Merica
killer shit
I don't like this song but I respect the ambition. This band is amazing
AhFuckingMazing
Piano and horns not perfectly in tune with each other?? maybe? i dunno. something sounded a bit funky
Singer is shit and off-key, maybe?
You need the ordinary while they are providing the extraordinary or at least a facsimile of it.
I really fucking hate how everyone sleeps on this band.
