    I took apart my kids (cheap) rc cars today to try and rectify the steering mechanism. I didn't have much luck as they still can barely turn. When they were new, on Christmas Day, they could make sharp turns. But now they can almost only travel in straight lines. Not much fun to play with. Could it be an inferior spring problem? And ideas?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  7 років тому

      My first thought is that the spring is what returns the steering to the centre so if they tend to travel in straight lines and NOT turn then it won't be the spring return that is the problem. More likely the batteries have run down and there is not enough power to drive the steering motor to it's full range. OR the steering has taken a battering over Christmas and may be damaged or clogged with dust, fluff, and hair so a bit of cleaning might help. Even just a layer of dust on the tyres will reduce the grip for turning.

    there is a video for back wheel disassembly? can yu suggest.?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  7 років тому

      Most toy grade RC cars have very similar gearbox and back axle assemblies so unless you have a specific brand of RC toy car you are interested in you won't find much difference. There will be the motor with a pinion gear driving a larger gear attached to the axle. Some toys with have an intermediate gear between them to drop the RPM down and increase the power. The main difference between the different brands will be whether the unit is screwed together or clipped together. Many NewBright gearboxes are clipped together, no screws, and usually the clips break when you try to lever them open.

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  5 місяців тому +1

      I very much doubt that you could buy one, certainly not at a sensible price. I expect it is the sort of thing you would have to buy from a Chinese manufacturer with a minimum shipping of 1000 items. You could probably make one from a small safety pin depending on your skills. Different cars will need different sizes of spring, so it is not the sort of thing that your local toy shop is going to stock. An ordinary paperclip is the wrong sort of wire, it is not springy enough. You can buy "spring wire" from hobby suppliers online, maybe eBay or Amazon or maybe a craft shop.

    Question do you have to keep the knob because it restricts my turning

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  3 роки тому +1

      The purpose of the spring and the pin is to return your steering to the centre. Without it you will find it impossible to drive straight as the steering will stay wherever you last turned. So if you turn left the car will keep going left until you turn right. It will then continue to turn right until you turn left. There will be no centre point. Take it out and find out for yourself. The pin is shaped so that if you twist it to one side it moves the 'return position' slightly to left or right to allow you to correct the car's steering if it drifts slightly when it should be going straight.

    Is the little oval stick below the spring important?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan
      @GrandadIsAnOldMan  4 роки тому +1

      That is the adjustment bit that returns the steering to the centre. If you leave it out you will not be able to get the car to go in a straight line. If you have lost it, you can replace it with a similar sized piece of plastic or even wood. The original piece is shaped so you can twist it to give finer trim for the accuracy of the straight driving if the car is tending to drive left or right.

      How is it dead? It is only a piece of wire and it only has one purpose which is to return the steering to the middle. There is very little stress on it so it will not break or wear out.

    Hey got an new one and it only steers about 10 degrees. Seems very rigid. Any tips on how to Fix it?

      All I can suggest is that you check all the moving parts to see if there is anything tight causing friction. The wheels may even be rubbing against the bodywork.

      Have you tried connecting a battery direct to the steering motor to check it goes both ways?

      You would have to take the car apart and connect some wires to a battery and direct to the terminals on the motor. Alternatively, do you have another transmitter that matches that car. You could check it is not just the button on the transmitter that is stuck.

    Sooo basically this is the exact system that is I the small scales isn't it? Could you use a speed controller to adjust a system like that to be proportional ish that way?! I wonder if that is how the Q32 from Hpi racing did it?
    Anyhow great video love your channel.
    Thanks for sharing

      You can use two ESCs, one for the drive and one for the steering. Yes, it does give you a degree of proportional steering. Here are a couple of projects I did with that method (I have done rather a lot of them) ua-cam.com/video/Vbd1FmFrxQk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/cqQPYVU4WkA/v-deo.html However if you are going to that length to give it hobby grade control you might find it more rewarding to go a bit further and fit a proper servo for the steering. ua-cam.com/video/pO252zaOlZw/v-deo.html

    My brother recently got a remote control car and when I press forward the front wheels go left and right when it’s supposed to go forward.any idea how to fix it?

    • @GrandadIsAnOldMan

      The most likely issue is that your controller does not match the car so you should find another controller. You could just swap the motor wires on the receiver so the forwards backwards motor is fed from the left right output. There is a potential problem there in that some receivers provide less power to the steering output, compared to the drive motor.

    Why is there a speaker slot when there's no speaker?

      I would make a wild guess and say the designers designed the chassis before they finalised exactly what facilities would be in the final production model. It would be easier to put the features in and not use them than it would be to add them after a production run had been completed.
