A Big thank you for this video. I was repairing my son's rc car and the spring came out which i didn't see where and how it was placed. This video showed the correct placement of the spring and wohoooo....the car's running again. Thank you again
Thank you, Grandad! I appreciate you taking the time to make this video for me. This was VERY helpful. The car I'm working on is a bit different, but I was able to apply this to it. I had things all backwards and upside down. After watching your video I had it back together and working again in no time. This will also help me with a few other cars I'm working on. I took apart my kids (cheap) rc cars today to try and rectify the steering mechanism. I didn't have much luck as they still can barely turn. When they were new, on Christmas Day, they could make sharp turns. But now they can almost only travel in straight lines. Not much fun to play with. Could it be an inferior spring problem? And ideas?
My first thought is that the spring is what returns the steering to the centre so if they tend to travel in straight lines and NOT turn then it won't be the spring return that is the problem. More likely the batteries have run down and there is not enough power to drive the steering motor to it's full range. OR the steering has taken a battering over Christmas and may be damaged or clogged with dust, fluff, and hair so a bit of cleaning might help. Even just a layer of dust on the tyres will reduce the grip for turning.
I have done several 'hobby grade' conversions of toy grade cars. Here is one where I put a small hobby grade servo in, for the steering - Poundland £5 RC RaceX Dune Buggy ua-cam.com/play/PLA5a2xPRSrB2TkwmXDBObPa4DytGbZ1lv.html
My daughter´s rc car lost the little pole/lever piece that goes within the wire (and below the car). I´m looking for a way to replace it So I can make it work. This video was very useful.
Most toy grade RC cars have very similar gearbox and back axle assemblies so unless you have a specific brand of RC toy car you are interested in you won't find much difference. There will be the motor with a pinion gear driving a larger gear attached to the axle. Some toys with have an intermediate gear between them to drop the RPM down and increase the power. The main difference between the different brands will be whether the unit is screwed together or clipped together. Many NewBright gearboxes are clipped together, no screws, and usually the clips break when you try to lever them open.
I very much doubt that you could buy one, certainly not at a sensible price. I expect it is the sort of thing you would have to buy from a Chinese manufacturer with a minimum shipping of 1000 items. You could probably make one from a small safety pin depending on your skills. Different cars will need different sizes of spring, so it is not the sort of thing that your local toy shop is going to stock. An ordinary paperclip is the wrong sort of wire, it is not springy enough. You can buy "spring wire" from hobby suppliers online, maybe eBay or Amazon or maybe a craft shop.
Let me think, ah yes, it's called a cover. It is a piece of plastic moulding that forms part of the housing for the steering assembly. As shown, it is held in place with 4 screws.
The purpose of the spring and the pin is to return your steering to the centre. Without it you will find it impossible to drive straight as the steering will stay wherever you last turned. So if you turn left the car will keep going left until you turn right. It will then continue to turn right until you turn left. There will be no centre point. Take it out and find out for yourself. The pin is shaped so that if you twist it to one side it moves the 'return position' slightly to left or right to allow you to correct the car's steering if it drifts slightly when it should be going straight.
That is the adjustment bit that returns the steering to the centre. If you leave it out you will not be able to get the car to go in a straight line. If you have lost it, you can replace it with a similar sized piece of plastic or even wood. The original piece is shaped so you can twist it to give finer trim for the accuracy of the straight driving if the car is tending to drive left or right.

The most likely issue is that your controller does not match the car so you should find another controller. You could just swap the motor wires on the receiver so the forwards backwards motor is fed from the left right output. There is a potential problem there in that some receivers provide less power to the steering output, compared to the drive motor.

My first thought is that the spring is what returns the steering to the centre so if they tend to travel in straight lines and NOT turn then it won't be the spring return that is the problem. More likely the batteries have run down and there is not enough power to drive the steering motor to it's full range. Even just a layer of dust on the tyres will reduce the grip for turning.
Thanks very much for your quick reply. I replaced the batteries and did a general clean and they are much better now. Much appreciated
Had the same problem, just fixed my kids rc. General rules: do not over-tighten the spring, good lubrication with a thin grease, new batteries.

Question Grandad, my Pagani Huayra has the same adjuster. Whats the purpose of it? Make the car steer biased to left or right?
PS. Subbed, you make pretty interesing videos!
Yes, the spring returns the steering to the centre and the adjuster helps you trim that centre position.

Hey got an new one and it only steers about 10 degrees. Seems very rigid. Any tips on how to Fix it?
All I can suggest is that you check all the moving parts to see if there is anything tight causing friction. The wheels may even be rubbing against the bodywork.

Have you tried connecting a battery direct to the steering motor to check it goes both ways?
