- The progenitor of Homeworld Deserts of Kharak - something that had to become an artistic successor to Homeworld title, with trailer released in March-May of 2013, but turned into the strategy on Kharak, as Gearbox acquired HW franchise in July of 2013.
HW - Hardware - became HW - Homeworld, and Shipbreakers became an IP of Hardspace: Shipbreakers.
I took the existing trailers (4 pieces) and cut them together to have it in one place with all the respect to @BBIgames .

I honestly thought this was a Hardspace: Shipbreakers spinoff that was on the ground and not in space...
Would be interesting :)
Someone already suggested that after Hardspace we need Hardware and Hardwater: Shipbreakers :)
It was the original game that eventually became Deserts of Kharak after Gearbox bought up the IP and made BBI a deal to use the IP, BBI then decided to use the Shipbreakers name for Hardspace Shipbreakers, since people were still a bit sad they didn't get the original Hardware Shipbreakers.
Ship Graveyard Simulator 2 is kinda H:S but on Earth, but without the style and polish and story. It might scratch the itch, tho.
Hardspace: Shipbreakers was actually not-so-subtly digging at real-life shipbreaking practices like on the beach of Alang in India. Where personal protective gear isn't given out or required, and people make lots of money (relatively), but pay in their own lifespan shortening by years every week. The amount of chemicals they have to deal with is unreal...
Anyway, I just thought that a ground-based version would be even more on-the-nose with that. And be much more sandy.
I personally really enjoy HS: SB as it is now, cuz I love floating around in a 3d environment. The movement is really nice.
@@Mirvra Looking at homeworld 3 now it's obvious that Gearbox interferred in the development.
Because BBI nailed it in their first versions and deserts of Kharak.
I was subtlety waiting to hear Weaver say "Hey Cutter! Welcome back to the Fold!"
He moved to the Outer Worlds just to find this planet and a cruel business without regulations...
He retired though
And you had been ser free
A disclaimer before or after the video about this not being an actual game in development would have been good
literally
I don't know why Black Bird Interactive is sleeping on Hardspace: Shipbreakers. I'd love to have a sequel.
they've only really been finished with it for a year or two. From conception to now I'd guess the game took about 12 years to develop in its entirety.
I'd love a sequel or even simple mod compatibility so modders can make their own ships for us to breakdown.
Imagine being able to dismantle luxury star cruisers, or maybe super sized ships like Star Destroyers from Star Wars
I was kinda hoping for a second that they made a second game where instead of tearing things apart in space, you used vehicles to help you tear down crashed ships. Maybe even larger models. Either way, it’s nice to see them mix it up in this shipbreaker world.
Hmm, that would be really cool. Like Shipbreakers 2: Harddesert :)
Is this a real game coming?
@@BeardedGuy_TawhidHardware ship breaker was the predecessor to hard space:ship breaker. Hardware was a strategy or mmo if I remember correctly. Hardware would goes on to become the game Home world:deserts of kharak, per contract of acquiring the home world ip.Which was out for a few years now.
I actually think this would work really well as a narrative companion to Deserts of Kharak set in the first person where you're basically a minor Kushan character experiencing the buildup to the discovery of the stone and the hyperspace core. Perhaps the gameplay is fairly similar to a shipbreaker game but in (mostly) gravity and on derelicts you have to partially dig up, and you advance in your career until you're sent on a very high priority top secret assignment as the last mission, and it turns out to be that you're one of the guys personally uncovering the core. Perhaps you are 'lucky' enough to live the 60 years it takes to build the mothership in a post credits scene afterwards...before the burning of Kharak
@@Deltarious Mevath Sagald Crew, you'd personally find entrance into S'jet Astrotemple and Naabal core chambers
That sounds like a good idea for a game
That sounds like the game I want to play, but unfortunately this is something completely different.
Hardspace Shipbreaker
Hardware Shipbreaker
I know it's similar, but this game is actually an RTS with troop units. Nothing at all like Hardspace, which unfortunately got permission to use such a similar name.
3D RTS, but it’s a text 80% of a time 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Unfortunately with the failure of HW3 I think the franchise is cooked for good
I'd love a hardspace style game set in the situation of homeworld deserts of kharak.
Somewhat like Homeworld Mobile: Deserts of Kharak? :)
This could have more potential as it could blend in 'life sim' and 'isekai' elements from a person's point of view. That would be more personable. Then they experience the military build up...
Actually, this is closer to the original idea. I read in a magazine I think ages ago about an upcoming game that was made by the HW devs.
It was supposed to be set on a desert planet and you would be excavating starships iirc. And while they didn't say it was in the HW universe or not. They did say there would be certain ships that fans of the series would recognize.
Gonna have to find that article.
@@AmDDReds "Homeworld Mobile: Deserts of Kharak" doesn't appear to be a thing, and Deserts of Kharak didn't have any Hardpsace style gameplay.
Same, would have been a better story than Hardspace, tbh
So, we had Hardspace:Shipbreaker, now we have Hardware:Shipbreakers. When's Hardwater coming?
@@HorizonSniper__ Nah, it was Hardware 11+ years ago, and almost immediately turned into Homeworld Deserts of Kharak. Only later BBI made Shipbreakers appear again with HSSB.
But the idea is good, I've already stated that BBI should do Submarine Titans 2, and Hardwater: Shipbreakers would fit that line :)
@@AmDDReds Ah, so this preceded Deserts? Nice to know.
@@HorizonSniper__ more or less safe to consider Hardware here, the "Alpha" for Deserts of Kharak. They wanted to make the game a Homeworld game to begin with, but if I recall right, there was some sort of issue with the IP holders at the time that was later resolved and DoK was released. Otherwise, we'd have gotten Hardware: Shipbreakers instead.
@HorizonSniper__ This was what became Deserts. When Gearbox got a hold of Homeworld in the Sierra-vivendi sell off, it was reworked into a Homeworld prequel when BBI took them on as a publisher. It also was originally going to be a squad based instanced mmo where you could discover new landmarks and name them.
@@AmDDReds it was "hardware" for like 5 years in a very slow development, before it were renamed as a homeworld gane
You know homeworld 3 miss theyre marked when they used traditional CGI rather then this art style that looks so amazing and captivating to our eyes.
communists hate beauty
That wasnt the only problem of that game. Leaks showed the previous versions of hw3 was more inline with the older games aesthetic style.
HW3 missed basically EVERYTHING because they reworked the narrative elements to fit the "modern audience" and abandon long time fans for whatever reason I don't care about.
Boy do I love this art style.
Yeah, we had a great plans for BBI to use it for Homeworld 3...
have you played Battletech? Its _full_ of this art style with great music. Just watch the opening cinematic if you need convincing.
During the gold rush, the fortunes weren't usually made by the men digging for gold, it was made by the man selling the shovels.
So, Baserunners seem to become new shovels :)
People... READ, already. Came here to comment that this was the original concept trailer for the game that *became* Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, but it's already right there in the video description.
I thought that was going to be a spin-off of Hardspace : shipbreaker and thought that would be very cool at first
I really like this idea! And I'm intrigued. But there is something bothering me that I don't understand -- when they have a comprehensive Prospector's Guide, how is it that the Kalesh site was there for a century, and that they are the first ones there? I would think with so much money in salvage, the planet would have had, very early on, an entire planet-wide survey conducted by a large constellation of satellites, and that AIs would be examining anything that could even begin to look like a ship or ship debris.
"See you Space Cowboy"
man just imagine if we ever got a third HW game with this kind of art-style and atmosphere , oh well , at least we'll always have 1/2/Cata/Deserts
I can't believe you posted this video. I got it sitting on my ssd for years, and yet you got lots of views in a few days. I'm sitting on a gold mine all this time and im shaking my head lol
I'm shocked as well :D
WHO'S GONNA BREAK THE SHIPS. WHO'S GONNA BREAK THE SHIPS AND THE LOGS
Damn This could be epic if they would ever make it into an DLC. Sadly the Homeworld 3 was such a massive dissapointment that even pirates wont touch it. Sooo I still have and apettite unsated.
I love how the title font slowly improved with each new trailer
This would be so awesome as a game! Awesome concept!!! Well done
Man does that soundtrack give me Battle Zone 98 vibes.
Bro imagine this in the Avatar universe, where you play as the RDA, I think that would rule.
Great idea!
As much as I love Homeworld, THQ and Relic. After HW3 it's evident that Blackbird is a lost cause.
Honestly, with how in vogue extraction games have been, I am surprised BBI never went back to Hardwares original PvPvE salvaging MMO concept.
NO WAY. NO WAY NO WAY NO WAY.
Postscript: Aw goddamnit, I got too excited.
I thought this was Hardspace but then got confused when it said homeworld. Description cleared it up!
This was the original game name for wat became homeworld deserts of Karak.
The lead writer made 2 stories on called hardware of with the homeworld prequel. Blackbrid then tryed to buy back the homeworld rights but lost out to Gearbox. At which gearbox when to black bird and asked them to make a new game in the homeworld series. At which point the lead writer came out with his story. A bit later to honour the first games concept blackbird moved it to space and called it hardspace : shipbrakers set in its own ip.
@@davesobani9565 who was that lead writer?
This has hard homeworld vibe
Deserts of Kharak was fun but this looks awesome!
Yeah, BBI should give this a try as well
I absolutely enjoyed Kharak I’m glad to see we are returning to something similar.
Only if a petition to Black Bird Interactive would be made :|
We may never get another dune rts, but this might just scratch my over 20 year itch...
It's something that converted into Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, and borrow the original name to Hardspace: Shipbreakers
This is so confusing. I saw the base runner and thought "clearly, this must be some sort of mistake? Hardspace Shipbreaker isnt set in the Homeworld universe!"
Looks fun!
Looks cool.
That's a badass short film/ trailer I wanna check the game out now
Homeworld Deserts of Kharak welcomes you :)
The sequel of Deserts of Kharak is looking pretty good!
More of ideological prequel to it :)
It's something that converted into Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, and borrow the original name to Hardspace: Shipbreakers
The concept is novel. Corpos fighting over salvage.
10/10 would play. Too bad none of this is real.
Gotta write BBI a petition :)
Not a big RTS guy but ive watched vids of desert of kharak and thought it was neat. Always loved scavenger games and was hoping this would be more like Hardspace but with the Kharak theme. Im curious, once you beat the enemy, do you just sit there and wait for a salvage meter to fill up or do you get to salvage stuff in first person at any point? Or, is it just once you beat the enemy you've won?
I'm sorry to say that this game was supposed ro be released as its own universe before being absorbed into Homeworld universe in 2013 before it was turned into HW:DoK.
Ha, it looks like everyone else in the comments section ALSO got really excited at the idea of a HS:SB sequel/spinoff. Glad I'm not the only one!
Yep, someone gotta make a petition to BBI :)
I know it’s a game, so game physics, but I refuse to believe a baserunner can can come to a stop like that
Yeah, you have a point
Come to a stop like that? How about land that jump without destroying itself?
As much as I loved HW:DoK, I would love to have seen this too, perhaps as a ‘original storyline restoration’ Total Conversion or similar.
Not forgotten, not forgiven.
I actually would have prefered this to HW:Dok!
I mean... We got the entire Remastered collection and deserts of Kharak for free, AND we got the money we put into Hardware Shipbreakers back.
Three games for free was a pretty neat trade for Hardware shipbreakers. Though yes, I also would've actually liked this game actually explored and made.
@@Mirvra it's a viable project, assuming they get rid of the woke writers that were responsible for the hw3 campaign.
An rts game that's somewhat similar to how battletech plays, merc company going around doing different jobs (whether it's salvage or military in nature) would be a good way to play it.
EPIC! Sadly this was never released :(
Not the Hardspace 2 I wanted, but I'm intrigued.
It's something that converted into Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, and borrow the original name to Hardspace: Shipbreakers
@@AmDDReds No, i know, but I just REALLY want a sequel.
Oh Deserts of Kharak was a nice little game, good story, liked the units and so on, but it was lacking when it came to the side content. Making a new game in the same style seems kind of nice.

I guess it was the weather…
You know, if I had a nickel for every game named "Hard[...]: Shipbreaker" I would have 2 nickels, which is not a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.
Actually, this is closer to the original idea. I read in a magazine I think ages ago about an upcoming game that was made by the HW devs.

Were going to play like those workers from "Solstice 5"
Yes, it really feels like that!
Thanks to deserts of Kharak and the assets used in that game I thought this was an expantion or a new stand alone title in the homeworld franchise.
It's HWDOK that used this game's assets actually :)
@@AmDDReds I hope they got permission to do so
@@Brendan1259 It's the same development studio (Black Bird Interactive.) They shifted gears when they decided to work with Gearbox (who bought the rights to the Homeworld IP) and decided to turn it into a Homeworld game. BBI actually attempted to buy the Homeworld IP themselves, but were outbid.
@@Brendan1259This game was essentially the alpha/game development before it became HWDOK. This was the original, then they got the Homeworld IP copyright/licensing and rebranded it / changed it into HWDOK.

Is this suppose to take place before or after Deserts of Kharak? Because at the end of D o K, the planet is nuked... so everything would be melted glass (sand) and burned... this doesn't show burns..
No, it was meant to be a separate title heavily inspired by Homeworld, but luckily (or unluckily) a few month after trailer Gearbox acquired Homeworld franchise and had a conversation with BBI to convert Hardware: Shipbreakers into HWDOK.
This isn't a new game they're showing off, this is old trailers for what later became Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
