The song was given to Heart and released as the first single from their ninth studio album Bad Animals. Heart's version is a power ballad which begins with a piano line and a subdued vocal from Ann Wilson, only to build to a dramatic love song. "Alone" is Heart's biggest hit, spending three weeks at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and ranking number 2 on the Billboard Year-End Top Pop Singles of 1987. It is also their most successful single in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. Paula Abdul was choreographer for the videoclip.
No one and I mean NO one can match Ann's voice.
The raw power of Ann's voice is phenomenal. She is one of the top vocalists of all time. Such a beautiful voice... And Nancy is my favorite female guitarist of all time. She kicks butt!!

Respectfully disagree with the "relatively unchanged" assessment - most of her upper register range is gone now, which is to be expected in her early 70s (age 73 in 2024). She can still sing pretty well in lower keys, though.

Every artist in the world could re-do this song and it would NEVER compare to the original--Ann's voice is just perfect!
Bear in mind that the original was by i-Ten; Heart (and other bands) covered this song. But they did the best version of all time for sure.

Nancy Wilson never got the credit for her singing talent in my opinion. Her backing vocals on this song showcase her amazing vocal talent and range. Without her singing, there is no Heart.
She's also a stone cold fox, so there's that.
She's a great singer .. in her own right . The problem is Ann is so freakishly amazing ! that it gets overshadowed . But i don't think she minds as she seemed happy with backups , and loved playing guitar as much as singing .

Nancy has got a lot of credit. The Nancy fronted songs like “These dreams” and “There’s the girl” topped the charts in the 80s. And then there’s her guitar playing. The dual vocals between Nancy and Ann inspired tonnes of bands after. For instance Alice in Chains have repeatedly paid respect to Heart.
I disagree Ann is heart. Without her magnificent range there would be no heart.
Nancy is a great singer but Anne's voice is just more amazing hitting those high notes,like no other female in history !!!

Every time she explodes with that "till now" i fall on my knees, overloaded by that power. And if Ann is the queen Nancy has to be at least the princess, her backing vocals are sweet as honey, i think that she can outclass, easily, a good 60/70% of other lead singers on the planet. Saw Heart open for Def Leppard last night at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. After hearing Ann sing, all I can say is...I would do her in a second. She just exuded this confidence and sheer power the entire time she was on stage...and this is coming from a 21 year old who was never around back in the day!
