  • 30 minute compilation of amateur 8mm cine footage of sailing on the Norfolk Broads. Sadly, this is another orphaned film and I have no background information as to who the people seen here are, but the films seem to span a few years and boat changes. The couple own their own sailing cruiser which they take out for short sea trips as well as sailing on the Broads. They clearly attended events around Broadland including Wroxham week which is seen here. By the hairstyles, clothes and cars seen, I would guess that the film starts ion the late 1970s and carries on into the 1980s.

There's a MK3 Cortina in the background at 2:02, so it'd have to be after 1969. There's also a Broom 30 with a GRP superstructure at exactly 2:00. They only started to be built in 1968. I grew up in Wroxham and the chalet bungalows at 12:20 don't look familiar, but could possibly be in Stalham.

It starts mid-1960s by the cars at 2:00. The Ford 100E had been replaced by the Anglia 105E and the 1100 had just come out. A legible number plate would be useful as the A suffix was introduced in 1963. I was living in Wroxham at the time.

The RAF raft was proabably RAF Coltishall or RAF Neatishead team practicing for the Norwich Raft race. I took part for RAF Neatishead in the late 70s /early 80s

the boat is a Mac Wester Malin. I would say more likely 60's into 70's. My daughters were born in the 80's and no one was wearing their hair like that then - least of all women of a certain income bracket. They look more like my brother's girlfriends, which puts them pretty squarely into the 60's early 70's. I was at college from 73, and those sorts of ladies' hairstyles were long gone. The ladies look as if they might be twins (Port and Starboard ;-) ). Certainly sisters.
There can't be that many MacWester Malin owners from the 60's.Looks like yacht is purchased new not second hand.
In spite of all the above the boat is definitely a MacWester Malin at launch on the Broads. These were introduced in the 1977 Boat show, so giving time for order and build cannot have been before end of 77 into 78. Maybe the Norfolk Broads were behind the times with fashion when it came to lady's hairstyles.

The men at the launch ceremony look as if they could be brothers - ??? family of elderly mum and dad plus 2 sisters, two brothers! They look very at home in Norfolk - probably locals.
