Putin knows that NATO wouldn't intervene if he invaded Ukraine. But he is aware that he would lose bargaining power if he did. So, the best-case scenario for Putin is to maintain the illusion that he's willing to invade without actually invading. It sends a strong message to his own people and to NATO!
What world do you live in where you think NATO wouldn't intervene? NATO would 100% intervene! now weather you knew about it is a different story.
@@johnconner4695 I think he's right. NATO would not intervene. Ukraine is not a subject of NATO. Heck, back in 1940 the US and the UK just watched Germany occupying countries around Europe. Never did a thing about it.

Unfortunately, as for today - Ukraine is alone in it.

@@Saiputera Seriously? Are you going to do any research before spreading your vomit on my comment? Al Jazeera was started by BBC-trained Middle-Eastern reporters that were exiled from Saudi Arabia after criticism of the Saudi royal family. BBC is a British organization, not American. Plus, the Americans stayed silent when Al Jazeera's office in Israel was bombed. Do you really think if they were any puppet of the United States, they would receive zero support after a heinous crime like that? Finally, the Qatari government operates in a regressive manner whereas this station stands in stark contrast with its lack of bias. Al Jazeera is funded in part by Qatar because of its immense success, the image of which Qatar is more than happy to display.

@@MusiQ8dict God bless you for your kind words brother!
@@TheSasudomi that is a very superficial statement. Back in X - XIII century there was no russia and no Ukraine. There was a state called Kyiv Rus. Its capital was Kyiv. And the kings of Kyiv founded many cities, including Moscow. For many reasons the latter became more powerful over time and started expanding to the east and to the north conquering the smaller nations.
Also, there was no russia before XVII century, there was Moscow kingdom. A separate state that developed their own language, culture and political structure.
A toponym Ukraine appeared in XII century and since then our country exists (unlike Moscow kingdom) within more or less same borders.
And last but not least: do you come home with a gun and try killing your household? This is exactly what russia does in Ukraine since 2014.
I hope I made my point clear: this is very wrong to call military aggression a homecoming.
@@c00k1iem0nster As a Hungarian I find your explanation interesting.
Sadly many "pan-Slav" nationalist love to think, their slav nation is the oldest (pointing some anchient slav state) and think that is theirs.
I never knew that detail that Kyiv Rus founded Moscow. But this mean that logic is like Croatia claim every Hungarian land, because their capital city was founded by a Hungarian king when Hungary ruled their lands too.
Also worth mentioning that during WW2 Ukraine welcomed german armies as liberators not as invaders. (They didn't know about what the Nazis will do with them.)
NATO is an explicitly defensive military alliance. The idea that NATO could exist as some offensive alliance threatening Russia is laughable. Even major NATO nations today are actively blocking Ukraine's defense build-up. It was/is structured entirely as a deterrent to external aggression (which was the Soviets during the cold war). It's post cold-war expansion has been almost entirely former Soviet states seeking protection from Russia.
Ukraine wants to join NATO because Russia wants to annex it, because it already has annexed part of it.

Evil always feeds on fear. Poland has experienced Russian aggression and occupation in the past, which is why Poles understand their neighbors, the Ukrainians, very well. Why Russia can't attract in a "positive" way but always has to corrupt, intimidate, attack - this is how Putin distracts from his own problems in Russia, where maybe except Moscow and Saint Petersbourg there is generally poverty and backwardness. Dictators fearing their own people will always direct attention outward and keep their own people feeling threatened. First of all, Ukrainians, keep your heads up and don't be afraid!
Putin !!! Go go
There is no evil and good
Yep, I agree with almost everything except that Ukraine isn't even close to being a democracy like Poland was in 2004 when it joined the EU (it is a bit less of a democracy right now).
The Ukrainian government is almost as corrupt as the Russian one and uses the war in the East as an excuse for failing to implement social, political and economical reforms.
I am almost convinced that if Ukraine was just staying outside the geopolitical mess and working out its own internal problems, there would be no military build-up on its Eastern (and Northern, and Southern) border.
Just look at Armenia. In two years, it did a far better job uprooting corruption than Ukraine in 8 (and it also was attacked from the East, btw).
I belive that "intimidate, attack" come from far, I mean USA. They want to impose theyr democracy, and to control the resources (market, people minds and natural resources) for theyr power. That is all the game. This a new war from where they (USA) want to benefit. Remember all the horors and genocides they do in the past 20 years, all over the globe. Do not be fulled by the propaganda. Let the nations be free. USA is not GOD.
Even though im 80 km far away from Russia, I keep myself in good mood. Sometimes, you have to switch on your own life
One funny thing is that people seems to forget we were here before in the 60d with the Cuba - USSR missile crisis. USA reacted the same way Russia is doing now, no one wants an enemy next door
"no one wants an enemy next door" - that is a golden line bro
Made even more crazy when you look at the location of American bases around the world. They are the perceived enemy at the door of so many countries.
Braindead comparison, since nukes are not even involved here, but that aside:
You would then agree the USA has the right to invade Cuba if they join Russia in an alliance, today?
One funny thing is that people tend to forget NATO has been sharing a border with Russia for more than 15 years.
1- Baltic states were accepted in NATO in 2004.
Estonian border is *150 km from St Petersburg*
Latvian one is *600 km from Moscow*
Lithuanian one is *80 km from Kaliningrad*
2- Russia (re)confirmed the Memorandum of Budapest (non aggression toward Ukraine if they surrendered their nukes) in 2009.
*Ukrainian border is 450km from Moscow* (30% closer than Latvia, is that making a big difference ?)
3- Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014.
*Why aren't there nukes in the Baltic states already if that was NATO's intention ?*
@@357Maxim there is a massive difference between the Baltic States and Ukraine. If, just for arguments sake, let's say NATO wants to invade Russia. You can't do that through the Baltics because it's too vulnerable. Kaliningrad to the southwest and Belarus in the southeast guarantees that you can't maintain a secure major military presence in the Baltics, there is only a few kilometers of corridor connecting the Baltics with the rest of NATO. And even if, let's say, NATO takes St. Petersburg (highly unlikely, but again for arguments sake), expanding their spearhead further into Russia will be very difficult, it's a narrow frontline.
Ukraine, on the other hand is a pretty massive country (by European standards), if Ukraine joins NATO, NATO can deploy pretty large formations with some confidence it won't get enveloped immediately. And the position of Ukraine is such that you need a short burst to Astrakhan to cut off Southern Russia entirely which is an existantial threat to Russia.
I don’t know a lot about Russia, but I don’t think any 1st or 2nd world country wants a big war anymore. People live too comfortable lives, and our weapons are way too powerful
Recently a global agreement was made to never use nuclear weapons ever. Not sure what happens to that agreement if full scale war breaks out.

This is Al Jazeera's, they are are gonna be too busy licking boots of Arabic nations and WISH NATO and Russia attack each other, so that Turkey will than take back Armenia from CSTO and Greece from the EU. When both NATO and Russia is destroyed, Turkey will then retake the Balkans and Turkmenistan against both EU and CSTO's wishes.
That's because Russia is the one making all the moves. NATO hasn't actually done anything except say "Yeah, Ukraine can join if they want to."
@@italktoomuch6442 come on, the very fact that NATO has expanded to countries on Russian borders is itself an aggressive move. Just imagine if Russia had expanded to Mexico..This is not to say that Russians are the victims but there is no "one aggressor-one defendant" situation here, we have aggressive developments from both sides
@@fotisbr5602 You do have a point there; from the Russian perspective you can understand why they feel vulnerable. But the Baltic nations weren't forced to join NATO. They weren't even pressured. They all wanted it, willingly, precisely because they were invaded and occupied by the USSR in the 40s for half a century and were terrified the Russians would do it again. Nobody in the Baltic nations is going to trust the Russian government, at least not for a few more generations and even then there would have to be some massive changes. Yeah, I get it, Russia feels vulnerable. But is that Ukraine's fault? They, and the Baltics, feel even more vulnerable, and you've got to see why. Honest question why is NATO so pressed to add Ukraine if it is causing this much confrontation ?
Ukrainians love America more lol
Well NATO would say that its charter is open to any European country to join, and if the Ukrainians want to join, that should be their right. Russia would probably say that NATO just want to box them in and reduce Russian influence over the region. And then NATO would probably say, under duress, "Yeah, I suppose we do want to do that too."

Members of NATO are not supposed to buy weapons from Russia or China. So by expanding NATO implies that the Russian economy will shrink because weapons brings in big money.
Interestingly, all this happens after the situation in Kazakhstan.
Not saying anything, just finding it interesting - almost like some foreign involvement was there, and Russia now trying to prevent that of happening in Belorussia (and other ally countries).
Strange no one even attempted to consider that as an option for a probable cause for sudden (or "sudden) build up.
A coup in Ukraine happened in 2014. In Kazakhstan could happen the same without Russia&Co help. Happily Kazakhstan was protected.
Here what everyone fails to mention when speaking of history , this history goes centuries before the Soviet Union ever existed, starting from Rus empire to the Russian empire , through those centuries Russia and Ukraine were one country, there was no Ukraine, even at a point Kiev was the capital of Rus.
That is what makes it all so madding all around the world, it was first the British running around the world carving up millenia old cultures and drawing new lines.
Now it is the infant young United States telling people which country is which and pushing it to the point that they are willing to risk a nuclear war.
If Russia doesn't hold onto her demand and stand up for herself it will be over for her within ten years and I believe Putin knows that so all these young men that think they are going to push some buttons and fire up some so called stealth aircraft and roll across Russia are going to get a rude awaking at the hands of the ancestors of Rus.
Thank you Michail for knowing your history but these arrogant Westerners are not listening.
Although I was born and raised in the United States and will probably have my phone go off some time soon with a national emergency alert announcing martial law because New York City, Washington DC and a few key military areas have been vaporized, I will know those that weaseled their way into power have brought it upon us.
My understanding is that region was ruled by a hodgepodge of Rus Princelings all independent and minimally cooperative with each other (Medieval Time). This quality sets the atmosphere for Mongol divide and conquer and suzerainty under the Golden Horde. So perhaps Ukraine and Russia was a single entity @ one time in history, but that is not necessarily true in anther time. And all this drama that played out in Medieval times was done without the novel concept of nationalism that we have today, further confounding the issue.

I do not think Ukraine is a model democracy which makes the Russians feel threatened. The problem is NATO have forces on the Russian border. I see no difference betweens Kennedys demand on the Soviet Union over Cuba in 1962 and what Putin is demanding of the west in Ukraine in 2022. Make a deal where Ukraine is a neutral country (such as Austria during the cold war) and the crisis is averted. End of story.
Russians are planifying into deploying the military in Venezuela and Cuba to kill the opressed civilians that want a definitive democratic government. Not to mention that about two weeks ago they deployed them over kazahistan to kill the rebels too.
What is the need to have Ukraine in Nato ? Finland was never asked to join and the reason is simply that Ukraine was always the only route where invasion to Russia happened throughout its History, any president of Russia will react the same and minimizing tis facts and acting as it is a Putin drama is a serious mistake, plus NATO isn't charity organizations people should understand that
There is currently a debate about whether Finland should join NATO. One of the parties there wants to join NATO; but the prime minister does not. Finland, however, made it clear to Russia a few days ago that this decision will not be taken in the Kremlin.

@@BitBaffled Your chagrin at the facts I presented is symptomatic of issues in your own mental acuity. 94% of Crimeans voted in a free and fair election to reunite with it's historic motherland, Russia. Indeed they formed long queues and waited for hours to be able to action their will to leave the fascists who had taken control following the coup in Kiev. International monitors from 26 countries reported no irregularities and even the US and EU acknowledged the 94% result was genuine and instead said that holding the election was illegal, which is a kick in the teeth to their stated love of 'democracy'.
I am not a fan of Putin and I am not subject to persuasion by Russian media. However I do recognise that he is the most adept and effective political strategist of at least the last 50 years, anywhere in the world, and that since the Yeltsin years he has restored Russia's position from basketcase to the most powerful nation in Europe. The Russian economy according to US rating agencies continues to grow above western averages and lifts millions out of poverty annually. The story is the opposite in western nations where standards of living are falling, poverty is epidemic and average incomes have dropped to levels of the early 1970s. Where I live in Scotland (pop 6million) a million people a week, most of them working for unsustainable wages, visit a food bank to survive. Total taxation is about 60% of income. That Russia continues to make such incremental progress despite sanctions and malicious interference is exactly why Russians do elect a capable leader who delivers for them steady improvement in their country and in their lives. And the continuity he has provided is a key aspect of Russian success.
Russia has not been expansionist and has only responded to western covert efforts to destabilise nations on it's borders. The US and Europe blew the opportunity for over 20 years to meet Putin in the middle and work together for peace and stability. However the US hegemony cannot countenance the vast natural resources of Russia being outwith their ability to plunder. What happened to Russia under Yeltsin is the western ideal for Russia and it is the reality of Ukraine today. This is not support for Putin it is political reality. And that is without mention of the most dangerous aspect of western machinations, the encirclement of Russia's western borders with first strike weapons.

You are lovely Sandra, but you forgot to tell that before Crimea was part of Ukraine in the '50 (While Ukraine was part of the USSR and not an independent country), it belong to Russia. You also forgot to tell that the Maidan Revolt that put Ukraine in the path for a more western approach, although started by an important segment of the people, was also monetary and logistically fueled by the US and its NATO allies. In fact, the main point missed in this analysis is the inefficiency of the UN, which instead of NATO (whose very existence should be revisited), should be sending Blue Helmets to the region and propose common ground negotiations to throw water and not fuel into the equations model.

The tussle between Nato and Russia is to be looked at from multiple perspective. A credible security arrangement is very much desirable to have and often times if it require some extra push one wouldn't mind. Doesn't the whole situation in Crimea peninsula already demonstrate that ?
We would love to have a escalation index of some sort where we can apply our math and immediately make some judgment. Super powers strategic balancing calculus can outwit some of the best math geeks. Political efforts are needed together with military calculations to keep the murky waters to be detectable with the help of surrounding data.
No, because Crimea was invaded. Russia took over then forced people to vote behind closed doors then provided the results as proof that their invasion was warranted AFTER the fact. Yes there are many soviet sympathizers and seperatists in that area more so than the rest of Ukraine, but they are not the majority... or at least they didnt used to be. Russia also has an established history of relocating persons to different places to diminish their collective power. It is the age old concept of divide and conquer, that is specifically why Russia doesn't want Ukraine to join Nato or the EU, becaue then they would have almost contractual allies.

One small piece of information you left out. US promised Russia that NATO would not expand beyond W Europe. A promise that they violated. In all fairness the objective of NATO was always to contain Russia.
Wrong. Not only USA never promised such thing, but it doesn't even work like that: NATO doesn't "expands" per se, but countries who wish to do so can ask for joining the alliance. Then, there is a whole process of checking if that country fulfill the standards of inside borders security, army doctrine and proven representative democracy elections, among other things.
Ukraine doesn't even stand a chance to join NATO nowadays, but that's a fact Putin couldn't care less: he truly sees democratic regimes as a threat to his autoritarian dictatorship, and will unilaterally attack whoever he sees as a threat to his stance on power.
@@antonio9693 Check your facts, promise was indeed made to post Soviet Russia that NATO will not expand beyond Germany after the fall of Berlin wall. I never made any excuse for Putin. @@Valkyri3Z You are wrong, so stop trying to tell other people to check their facts. There is NO LEGAL commitment to ANYONE regarding the ''expansion'' of NATO's membership. Feel free to CHECK YOUR OWN FACTS, preferably NOT from your RUSSIAN propaganda backlog. Now that you have looked it up and are aware that there is no ''promise'' from NATO, it's time to explain some more facts. Russia signed a legally binding contract called the Budapest Memorandum, which provided guarantees that Russia would respect Ukraine's SOVEREIGNTY AND INDEPENDENCE in exchange for removing nuclear weapons, which it has violated multiple times. Now, are we surprised? Much like commie CCP infested China, international treaties and agreements are never respected by dictators and tyrants, so I don't expect Russia to keep to their legal commitments either. Russia should stop making agreements and continue doing what they do best - i.e. genociding.
Now never again tell people to check their facts when you yourself have ZERO idea except from the words of the genocide kings - Russia.
Also, just as the other poster said, NATO does not ''expand''. You have this misconception because you're full of Russian propaganda, and all you know is coercion. Russia coerced countries from the Baltics to Asia to join the soviet union by force. They continue to attempt to coerce these countries into joining Russian alliances when they clearly DO NOT WANT TO. NATO also does not have the power to force its way into a NATO member state and setup, a member of NATO can decline hosting forces if they so wish, much like in the case of Bulgaria. So while NATO is consent-based, Russia is coercion-based and when coercion doesn't succeed, then just commit genocide, right? Holodomor??
