  • Today we take a look at what to do when your batteries are SO dead, that the charger doesn't want to turn on! and also talk about a device called "Lazarus the battery booster"
    I like the marine battery chargers since they usually always have multi-chemistry settings for different sealed battery types

    I've been in the industry since 1989. I use a 12v charger from a power tilt manual wheelchair. I removed the XLR plug and installed alligator clips. Works fine, with the exception of the piddly 2 amps.

    What you said about using same size brand and capacity, along with batteries of the same age, all good stuff, you are right on, but changing them with an automotive charger, I suggest, putting the batteries in parallel so that each one receives half of the charging current and will therefore be fully balanced when the charge is complete. 😊

    I had big scooters ,,wrangler,,, for years there batteries wore out in about two years. I bought the d31 spiral wound optimas and I got 6years out of two sets and about one third of my batteries cost . I used the scooter constantly after the cost of the second set wearing out in 2years I went to the optima blue top deep cycle sealed batteries and the 6years for each time I was extremely happy. Oh I wore out one set of motors and the tiller bearings , I fixed the tiller using a pillow block bearing over the bicycle head set bearings.

    No intent to disrespect your personal relationship ( consider this a compliment to you & yours) … I was playing various videos related to my wheelchair problem(s) .. I heard your voice & said out loud - Oh kewl it’s my next husband !
    I have followed you for so long - I’ve been a quad since 2004 . Your video’s are Terrific. This old house ( tv show) .. needs a “This old wheelchair” series .. by none other than yourself .
    I have that dolphin type charger / caster wheel design nabs where I can’t see ( short / petite) .. I rolled over the 3 pin connector & - you guessed it.
    The big heavy Lester charger I have had it since my paralysis date. I own 2 .
    I verified the switch is on gel/ agm vs lead .
    The charger is warm to touch when it isn’t plugged into the joystick & yes, left on since I feel like this charger is my ball & chain - I can not get a full charge on the joystick .. the charger will go to solid green . Disconnected from the joystick .. the joystick reflects 3 cells out - quickly goes to just yellow cells lit up on the joystick & toggles back n fourth .. providing different readings on the joystick … after
    Being connected to the ball & chain yesterday .. last night
    Any thoughts ? I don’t have someone willing to take my batteries out .
    Next question, please :
    Is the connecting wire that plugs into the joystick wire .. possible to be bypassed .. purchase a adapter wire for the same portable black charger you have .. that will plug into a 4 pin connector(yellow with black outer cable ) that goes to the batteries ?
    Basically to avoid the joystick in case it’s 3 pin female charging connection is messed up ?
    Forgive my format/ this screen jumps & I don’t see the entire thread.
    I don’t mind clarifying/ if needed & not too daunting on your end lol
    Good video btw,
    have a thankful Thanksgiving & a Merry Christmas

    Can you also fake the state of charge by connecting a 12V power adapter (±1.5A) to the battery at the same time as the 12V battery changer? Or do some electrons start flowing in the wrong direction then? (power adapter getting 14.1V on its 12V output).

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  3 роки тому +3

      only issue there would be causing a 'ground loop' - connecting the outputs of 2 power supplies across the same batteries will more than likely make one of them burst into flames! better to use a jump starter battery pack or something that doesn't plug into the mains :^) combining 2 switching power supplies together, or one with a capacitive dropper (most small power adapters) can create a crazy feedback loop.

    Great educational video. I’m looking at selling my late mothers mobility scooter. I’m based in the UK and the batteries haven’t been charged for a minimum of 12 yrs. They are Lead Acid GS Portalac 12v 12ah rechargeables. I tried charging them out of curiosity and the charger immediately has a green light but obviously they aren’t charged. Charged for 24 hrs and they didn’t show any power. So watching your vid it’s possible the charger isn’t detecting them. The multimeter reading for each battery is 0.49.
    So my question is are they too old to even try rejuvenating ? They are maintenance free sealed so it’s hard to know what state they are in. There is no bulging they look ok lol the scooter was stored inside the house.

      yea.. the red light can mean any number of things.. voltage too low, shorted cell, the charger hasnt had it coffee yet... lol

    Had an interesting battery experience a week ago. My wife faithfully plugs in the charger on her M3 every night. One day, while using the chair, she asks me "what are these blinking red lights?" The battery gauge was down to its last two bars,; she hadn't noticed her gas gauge was on "empty" until they started blinking. I fussed around with a bit and discovered that the metal shell at the end of the card from the charger had become unscrewed a bit, so that the pins were apparently no longer making good contact with the chair. Screwed it back down, inserted the plug, and the chair charged right up.

      @@TotallyNormal- Thank you, i did the load battery test while driving wheelchair and measured battery while under load test for 1/2 mile with middle speed, load reading start 25.4v dropped 24.3v. the battery acid sealed 9 month old used in house only short distance very little use. the battery read 25v after load test which confused me to think the battery is ok and controller joystick is the problem. I just replace joystick controller as old one was giving error 7 times flashing code which indicate joystick controller problem . so i got a used one but got same battery reading low (2 lights out of 5). do you think current joystick controller can give that error in reading battery charge as a less than the actual as it reads just first 2 lights red and orange while battery measured full 25v and the charger 2 green light indicates full charged battery. thank you again for such amazing channel and compassionate personality.

    I have a Jazzy ES 600 power chair from Pride Mobility. I have been really good with keeping up with the maintenance because I ride it really hard. I purchased it new in 2015. She is a Beast! Like everything though, occasionally, she gives me a little headache. For the past 3 days I have been using different outlets in my home trying to get her charged to no avail. What happens when I plug in the charger is I get one red light, but the other light comes up orange for 2-3 seconds then turns into a flashing green light. It will not charge my chair at all. I did not run my chair all the way out of power, but now after 3 days of experimenting, I am now on my last single red light. I am so panicked because I am pending surgery, I have no mobility, and the soonest date I could get any tech out is not until February 13th. How can I tell if the charger is faulty, the new joystick which is only 3 months old, or if the batteries need replacing, the last time I got new ones was about 3 years ago. If I can get a fix on this immediately and still keep my tech appointment, my life has a chance to not completely unravel. HELP!!

      most 'smart' chargers wont kick on when the voltage is too low.. *typically* when the batteries are less than 1 volt - they're bad.. but a manual battery charger is needed to raise the voltage enough for a smart charger to recognize them.

    • @TotallyNormal-

      depending on the chemistry - lithium packs are a bit different.. LiFePO4 are pretty common for wheelchair applications but generally speaking ya don't have to worry about them much. most of the large packs have a battery management system (BMS) built in and will switch into a low power mode after some amount of time. youll wanna check the the Li pack's documentation - but long term storage of them "should" usually be around 50-80% charge. the biggest thing with lithium powered wheelchairs.. when they're done charging DISCONNECT THE CHARGER! (this is quite opposite of lead acid batteries lol) large Li batteries don't like being held at 100% by a charger for extended periods. BUT all that being said... in my bounder for example.. i use it, come back, and charge it up, then unplug it. (its not my daily use chair - just for long outside trips usually) the BMS takes care of it all and ya dont really have to worry about anything :^)

    Would it work to switch to lithium battle born? You can monitor the batter with your phone.

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  3 роки тому

      there's a lot of new battery systems out there.. LiFePO4 IMO is the best Li chemistry for wheelchair use. the energy density is a bit lower for the physical size with LiFePO4 BUT its WAY safer and more stable.. and has a longer service life then Liion - just stay away from LiNiMnCoO2 or NMC batteries.. they're quite volatile!
      - but retro fitting them can be a bit tricky - and its hard to get 24 volts from these packs.. usually they're 26-27 volts on the high end BUT yes - i do like lithium drop in replacements! just wanna make sure that they have BMS that can handle charging in series with your stock chair charger.. and also the battery gauges on most wheelchair control systems aren't setup for the voltage curves on Li packs - and may just show 'full' all of the time. hopefully more manufacturers move over to lithium soon.. on a side note though.. some chairs RELY on the weight of lead-acid batteries down low for the suspension to work properly.. but if ya can find Li batteries that fit, and charge in series happily, and output the correct 24-25 volts.. go for it!

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  3 роки тому

      i just looked at the specs of 2 of their 24 volt batteries..
      BB10012 (100 Ah)
      BB5024 (50 ah)
      looks like the 100Ah version is better suited for wheelchair use - its rated for 100 amps continuous with surges to 200 amps
      whereas the 50Ah version is only rated for 60 amps continuous with a surge of 100amps
      wheelchairs regularly see over 100 amp surges and an average of 20-70 amps while running around

      I’m always fighting dead batteries.

      nice! does the invacare chair use the NF22 batteries? most of them are pretty small capacity... but there's usually space for larger batteries in a lot of the older models!

      i always use MK power batteries - they are a bit more expensive.. but last a LOT longer! www.mkbattery.com/products/hme-mobility and they are the OEM batteries for most manufacturers

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  Рік тому

      hmm if the chair moves while its plugged in, then an electrical connection isnt working properly..
      do you have another charger you can try just to rule it out as an issue?
      also check the cable that goes to the joystick (if its removable)
      short of all that, it could be an issues inside the joystick.
      sometimes the charging connector socket can get damaged

      what are the indications that its 'stopped charging'? lights turn off or something?

    • @JimWeber
      @JimWeber Рік тому

      @@TotallyNormal- it was an audible sound of the fan turning off in the middle of the night which is kept under my bed. So the following night I put the charger where I can see the lights in the dark and charge the chair again. This time the fan went off after about 1 hour as before, but I could see that the charger continue charging all 3 cycles until morning- but still not getting a full charge as indicated on the battery level. So Friday I went to my wheelchair dealer and borrowed a large 8 Amp Lester charger and charged it overnight and got a full complete charge. The batteries were tested and they found no problem like bad cell. They did a current draw test to see if the batteries were draining below 24 volts, but nothing unusual. They installed group 24 AGM batteries instead of gel, which was disappointing.

    • @TotallyNormal-

      those cliplight chargers only run the fan during bulk charging mode typically.. then the rest of the modes are fanless.. how many hours total is the chair plugged in for usually? yea like i was saying before trying another charger is a good way to see if THAT charger is having an issue!

    • @JimWeber
      @JimWeber Рік тому

      I have to Cliplight Chargers and both of them behave the same gave the same amount of charge, as well as the dolphin charger which is about 7 years old. I typically charge my chair about 8 hours everyday. On my old quickie p222, I could charge it every 3 days.

    I just bought a used electric wheelchair and the batteries were dead so I tricked them by hooking up my car battery charger to the batteries and then the wheelchair battery charger started working. I'll keep an eye on it and let it charge all night and see if it works

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  Рік тому +1

      just make sure when you're done with overnight charging, you check both batteries with a meter, and make sure the voltage on both is the same (or very close to it)

    I'm about to crap my chair I know had half a charge then I bought it and paid down on it and it had run down to the red he plugged in the charger the other day and the charger was getting hot because the fan wasn't running but I don't think it should have got that hot anyway but we unplugged it and I went and measured the voltage and that's cool. I will probably charge these battery individually I just wish I had the older charger that did not tell me batteries were uncharterable sometimes I'll figure something out I have a fan somewhere but it makes me queasy cuz I'm not picking it up for another week and there it says with the batteries did and I hope he is moving it around too much
    I know this thing looks like no it hasn't been used much and it might be part of the trouble I hope so I can wake these batteries up they're just stock lead acid

      pulling them out of the chair and using a good automotive battery charger with an AGM profile on it, is the best way to see if they can be recovered. if the chairs have been setting for years though, there's a very high likelihood of the batteries being toasted :^/

    Family havent used nor charged chair in over 3 years. The batteries and chair were new never used. Trying to get rid of thr chair to a neighbor who needs it. The volt was 5 and 0.4 i opened up the batteries and refilled water. Now one battery is 12.5v while the other one is so slow in charging but its at 10.40v and now 10.8v
    Is there a way to make them equal. Can thr 12.5v one over charge and go to 13 or 14v? Do i stop charging and let it sit, would they equalize on their own?

    • @TotallyNormal-
      @TotallyNormal-  2 місяці тому

      with batteries that old, theyre probably toasted by now..
      typically connecting known good batteries in parallel overnight will balance them - BUT 3 years of sitting in a chair with the quiescent power draw of the chair's electronics, i can pretty much guarantee they're bad
