Why would they want to recreate the Rebar. The Bond is a good modern rendition of the venerable PST. Not just for Europe, but for anyone interested in a smaller, lighter, pocket clipped MT. Glad you corrected that. There were also some other differences between the Bond and Rebar. They are not exactly the same except for one tool

I'd love to see a "updated" leatherman juice. The micra and squirt are nice because they are so lightweight but they also don't feel robust enough for some medium tasks but the wave/surge/rebar can be a bit too heavy if you want lighter carry. I really wish I had picked up a Juice S2 when they were still available. Thanks for another great video.

  • @henkeH2

Totally agree on the Juice S2. I always carry mine with me, can´t imagine being without it. I regret not buying a spare before it got discontinued - to me it is the perfect size. I have the Wave and its great, but too big to lug around. The tool you´re going to use is the one you have with you.

The juice S2 has been my international travel multi tool for years due it’s smaller non locking blade and ability to use the philips based bit kit. It really was perfect in that role.

The Bond is a great tool. I bought one in Feb 2022 and as far as I can tell the blade issue has been fixed -- you can shake it violently and even drop it on the floor and that blade will not "fall out". Given the size and smooth outside profile (nothing sticking out like the lock tabs on other models) it is extremely comfortable in the pocket (I'm about 200lbs, 34in waist and carry it in mostly slim Levis).
It is essentially a Rebar with a pocket clip. No locks, but the slip joints are stiff enough to get a good amount of work done -- its not like the tools just flop around.. Those springs are tough as hell. It's not going to compete with a Rebar or ST300 in a construction/industrial setting, but as a non-threatening, casual EDC for life outside of work I've been very happy with it for the last 3 months.
If they put a pocket clip on the Rebar I would absolutely carry it instead but in this tool family the Bond is the only in-pocket option, and it does a fine job around the house and yard. This weekend I did a full carb and muffler service on my 2-stroke weed eater with it. If slip joint tools are that terrible, someone better let Victorinox know cause they've been building an empire on them for over a hundred years, just sayin'.
Also, I wish he made this correction more obvious or reshot that section of video: the Bond *absolutely does* have a file. They reduced the saw and serrated blade from the rebar, not the file.

I started, in the early 90s, edc-ing with the PST. Then, I moved on to the Rebar; and finally found a Blast. The Blast is my favorite edc. I use the "new" Surge at work (in a warehouse). And the KF4 is my favorite "lite" tool (but have a PS4 on my key ring). Great review, Ty.

I love my Juice S2, I regret that I didn't buy the CS4, for me that would have been the perfect edc multitool. I just can't find anything on the market today that would have the same tools as the CS4 in that compact size. Great video, I hope that Leatherman pays attention to the suggestions you make.

Personally for any work that needs a strong grip, I'm really glad Leatherman left the sharp edge handles in 90's.
Those nasty handles are why I owned a SOG Paratool until the Wave came out !

I bought a Bond a week ago. I bought it as my first Leatherman because it looked classy, slim, yet had some beefy tools. However, I just couldn’t get over the blade issue. I returned it and bought a Rebar instead and am in love with it.

Great update! Reached out to Leatherman about the Bond and got a pretty canned reply, but they said that sending it in for warranty would "fix it". We'll see... The Sideclip is my favorite of the "vintage" Leatherman tools for sure. Super slim, sleek and I like how the branding on the clip is such a different style from the PST. Really refined in its looks. Was able to find a pretty good price on both the bead blasted and the polished versions (like the polished more I think...)

Love your videos, they are the best EDC Tool Videos on the net! I'm right there with you on the Juice S2, matter of fact, I was thinking about that today and will be calling Leatherman to give them my thoughts. I've been carrying the Juice S2 everyday for years now and find it indispensable for my needs. There is nothing in the current Leatherman lineup that replaces it. I'd love to see one that is slimmer, and lighter with a pocket clip, torx screws, and a bit driver to replace the 4 screwdrivers in the tool. That would free up space for something more useful like a combination file and/or awl. Need to put some more thought to that, but you get my drift...

I have a Chinese Juice clone that I bought more than 15 years ago as an EDC multitool for my work as an industrial climber, I specifically chose the clone because it was so cheap (about $7 at the time) but still relatively good quality and the chances of it getting stolen were pretty high (It's the second one I bought because the first one actually did get stolen). I have a Surge but because I live in Germany I can't EDC it so it is exclusively used at work (carpentry) and at home, IMO it's a bit heavy for regular EDC anyway. So the Juice clone is my EDC, I love the form factor and selection of tools, I haven't done a direct comparison but for sure it is heavier and thicker than the real Juice and uses a much lower quality steel but, to be fair, after 15+ years of use it is still in great shape. If Leatherman reissued the Juice I would buy one (more likely 2) in a heartbeat!

  • @tomcardale5596
    @tomcardale5596 3 роки тому +2

As someone that rarely uses the saw or serrated blade, I would prefer a lighter and thinner tool without them. Plus the cost saving.
I've been carrying the Sideclip every day for ages and have recently replaced it with the Bond. The Sideclip has the best selection of flat screwdrivers in any Leatherman. The Pulse's small driver is too small, newer ones like the Bond and Rebar don't have a small driver that fits electrical terminals.

The juice S2 is my favorite leatherman, it's small and has all the right tool. It's not a sturdy tool, but for mostly on every day stuff (opening of various of boxes, paint cans, beer bottles and adjusting and tightening different regular and philiphead screws and some poke around) this is the tool I love to carry on my person. If I'm going places I do tend to bring along a more sturdy piece of leatherman tool (mostly the free p4 or the surge) depending on the trip or the location. But for most tasks around my every day scenario the Juice S2 is cutting it (no pun intended, the blade is not the best part, which for me living in Norway that has a strict knive regulation is probably a good thing) anyways totally agreed with you on a 21 first century update on that, and thanks for the information that you give on such a nice and informative way

  • @b2gills

I just recently received my Talos multitool, made by Ganvas. While it is very much a budget multitool, it has a surprisingly good pair of scissors. I've even thought of replacing the scissors of my Surge with the Talos scissors, they are that good.
The rest of the tools seem relatively decent for what they are, and for the price.
The phillips driver seems to be made only as a #1 phillips, but is sort-of compatible with the Leatherman Blast bit driver adapter. (It is a little thinner in one direction leading the bit adapter to be a little wobbly, but could be fixed with a shim.)
The spring retention of the handles makes it really nice for a pocket carry. Honestly I like to just fold and unfold them as a fidget tool. They have a really satisfying spring loaded lockup in both the open and closed position.
The wire cutters also seem to work a little better than they do on either of my Surges. (Unfortunately the replaceable cutters do not seem to be compatible with the ones from Leatherman.)
After having wrote this, I went and looked at some pictures. It seems like the company that is manufacturing the Talos pliers is also making plier based multitools for Wetools, biburytools and various others. Based on the shape of the cutout for the spring retention of the handles, and the shape of some of the inner tools.

A revived Juice is really all I want from Leatherman. . . Aside from a fancy Surge.
But I have like fifty Juices, and I wouldn’t mind a current production version. They’re the perfect size and just so handy.
Literally just address the issue of the back springs occasionally spontaneously snapping and it’d be perfect

  • @davidstancomb5380

Would installing a neo magnet at the top end of the handle act to 'pull' the blade into the fully stowed position and keep it from flapping around?
My ideal Juice replacement would be a Wave style model slimmed down in terms of both length and thickness, but with retained width so that even with slightly shorter blades they would retain the same breath of steel (and hence rigidity and robust form factor, and (the curse of the juice) the fracturing of thin springs.
This would be achieved by fewer (two) long blades in a 3.5 inch frame, and secondary blades whose length could be retained somewhat if the nose length of the pliers was reduced.
    Form Factor:
Wave/Surge style built to a diminuitive 3.5 inch frame length.
    Pliers:
The pliers would have shorter nose length to maximise space for secondary blade size in the shorter frame; with the reduction in size replaceable cutting edges would probably have to be sacrificed.
    Primary Blades:
Side 1 C30V Straight bladed knife with a gut hook on the back.
Side 2 File. Diamond/Cross Cut combination file removable so it can be used to sharpen the blade if needed or a longer saw blade or file unit temporarily fitted if needed.
    Secondary Blades
On the secondary blade perspective there could be room for three thin blades or two thicker options on each side.
Side 1 2D bit holder, The reason not to have fixed 'screwdriver' blades is to allow for convenient carriage of torx, posidrive, philips, and flat blades depending on what you normally need.
Built in stowage for two or three bits for the driver (basically a magnetised flip out L shaped blade to retain the bits - while the blade is closed in the handle they could not fall out as the
back and side of the handle would form the other two sides)
    Side 2 Threadable Awl
    Can/Bottle opener/wire stripper
Broad flat blade pry tool with a chisel edge bevel on the tip and side.

  • @Billhumphreys3370
    @Billhumphreys3370 2 роки тому

I still have the PST 1 and PST2 (which added scissors). When the Bond came out, I imagined that Leatherman designers said: "Well we can't come up with any new multitool concepts, so let's go retro and produce a revamped version of the old PST, with tools that you can access only when you open the handles. Maybe smooth the pliers' gripping surface a bit.... I guess that will have to do for the next couple of years.... "
If they want to revamp anything, let them bring back the Juice! A great little toolset that has everything I need:-
    > pliers + wirecutters
    > knife blade
    > scissors
    > flat head driver (s)
    > Phillips head driver
    The Bond? Disappointing.

Living in the UK I would rather the bond get ride of the Aul and the knife and just have sissors the knife law is so grey just to be safe most people who carry leathermans would carry a pocket knife on top so there's no need for a blade especially since a lot of people think the bond does lock when you put the handles together I don't think that but if other people do then any police officer over here could think that and you can get in trouble so I say leatherman get rid of any knife and I will be happy

I’m surprised, and am a big advocate, that Leatherman hasn’t released more knifeless version tools, especially the Wave.
