Everyone in the comments are praising how wonderful this exhibition of martial arts was but I have a big problem most are not willing to admit. Most of these stuff looks and works great in Kata, but not practical applications in everyday life. For example, look at this kumite, both men initial technique after "sizing up" are well executed but after that, they are like two frailing chickens. This is why a black belt, with years of experience, will often get destroyed in a street fight. I propose that from purple belt straight to 3rd degree black, there should be an element of real life fight scenarios to earn those belts.
Actually this is sport kumite; self defense is different, You cannot do a self defense tournament; where most will finish fractured; in coma or whatever. Also is not polite (you would live in Japan to understand that) However; self defense is something that is barely practiced in Karate. Other point is to practice body strengthening; be like a rock like couple of Karate styles so in that way a good hit can be devastating. Regarding practical self defense. In my case last time few years ago I could finish with the problem with a low kizami geri and a kizami zuki to the throat (controlled)
It’s because they are following sports rules. When I competed, we had tournament fighting with rules and while in class we had real life scenarios. They are black and white different.
It's the ippon kumite spirit. Staring at what's happens et looking after a good MA or MAAI. HIT at the good moment,and face with open hands for eyes,throat and groin in Self défense. These sort of combat are good éducatif for the street.

Their hands are most of the time actually dropped down .... Seems that is comon issue with sport nocotact point karate.
