  • As part of the Indian Medical Association’s nation-wide protest condemning the rape and murder of a Kolkata woman doctor, doctors of various hospitals in Madurai staged a protest at their respective places on Saturday.
Expressing their solidarity with IMA, Tamil Nadu Government Doctors’ Association members staged a protest on Madurai Medical College premises raising slogans for speedy action against the perpetrators of the murder.
Trichy/Madurai: The nationwide agitation over the rape and murder of a PG doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata reverberated in Trichy, Madurai and Tirunelveli with doctors in govt health centres wearing black badges on Thursday demanding fair and transparent investigation into the incident. Doctors of Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai along with those from various govt hospitals and PHCs associated with Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) have announced a one-hour protest on Saturday.
Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a day-long protest on Saturday which may affect outpatient wings.
In Trichy, as many as 550 doctors serving in Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital, 10 govt hospitals in taluks and 84 primary health centres in the city and rural areas joined the protest on Friday. They urged the Union govt to enact a national level Act in line with the healthcare personnel and healthcare institutions Act, 2023 enacted by Tamil Nadu govt. Medical students of KAPVGMC paid homage to the deceased doctor by holding candlelight vigil at the college auditorium. TNGDA members held a candlelight vigil in Tirunelveli too in the evening.
Service Doctors and Post-Graduate Association (SDPGA) state secretary T Aruleeswaran said there is no adequate security, especially during night shifts, in the health sector where a large number of women doctors, nurses and other staff are employed.
“We demand that the Tamil Nadu govt take appropriate measures to ensure the safety of doctors, particularly female doctors, nurses and staff. The hospitals, particularly govt-run institutions, give easy access to anti-social elements who could cause trouble to medical professionals,” said Aruleeswaran.
As part of the protest in Madurai, doctors plan to form a human chain, urging authorities to expedite legal proceedings against those accused in the Kolkata incident. Doctors in Madurai and Tirunelveli are united in their demand for justice for their fellow medical professional, according to a TNGDA release.
