I've been an IQ fan since 1983. I miss this line up for years, now.... November 20, 2023 I finally saw IQ for the first time, June, 1999 at Foy Hall , University of Moravian college, Bethlehem, N.J. as part of the excellent 12 year series of NEARFEST ( North East Art Rock FESTival) 1999-2012 ( no festival 2011).
Incredible that such a nice human performance gets 100, 1000 times less thumbs up than silly kittens reacting on lights or shadow, feathers and toys. This deserves millions and millions of appreciating nods !
That's because this music is cerebral, it engulfs the mind. Liking a kitten video is a low-effort, low-IQ thing... easy to do, costs nothings.... Quality and quantity tend to be mutually exclusive.
The smoothness of that transition from Peter to Mike's guitar solo at 04:12 is just incredible. It even stands more out here live than in the studio version. Great band and so many great songs!
Thanks to this composition I always listen to the whole album IQ "Subterranea" with starting "High Waters" and "The Narrow Margin", when I go skiing in the forest in my neighborhood.
They played Subterranea [full album] live 2 years ago in De Boerderij, The Netherlands, during their 30 year celebration. Happy my daugher and I were a part of it ;)
I have seen this band four times and each time it was a transcendental experience. They take you on a musical journey, uplifting, occasionally reminding us that they are a Prog band, but always with a breathtaking ending to the journey.
For all the dreamers, best music ever. The voice of Peter is today as good as in the beginnings. Hope, they create music till my end. Enjoy every titel, they made. Thanx for all the " Gänsehautmoments" in my life.
Wunderschöne Melodien episch instrumentalisieren...können heute wohl nur noch sehr wenige. Welch ein genialer Song...zwischendurch beginnt man leicht zu fliegen ;-)
Of the thousands and thousands of songs I've heard and enjoyed in my lifetime, I believe this ranks as my number 1. It's just absolutely positively brilliant. I had the luck of a lifetime to have witnessed a live performance in 2009 in Pennsylvania when IQ played in concert. I'll never forget the way it sounded, as long as I shall live.
Subterrania is one highlight from a career full of them. The Narrow Margin is the perfect ending and an emotional rollercoaster of incredible depth. Buy the album. Play it again and again from beginning to end...
Isn't Mike Holmes a stunning guitarist? Makes the endless complexity of IQ look so effortless. He's obviously a big Hackett fan, but it's not a copyist thing at all. He has a deftness and accuracy rarely seen in any form of music 😊
It's amazing that Peter Nichols voice has held up so remarkably since this show in '99. I saw IQ in 2012 at RoSFest. It was better than outstanding! I'd never heard of them before I saw them on the bill, then seeing them live. They've certainly been in my five ever since!
In my 40+ years as a prog fan, I've seen every major band live at least once. These guys are as good as anyone; only Camel, Gentle Giant and Horslips can compete with them for me. Their musicianship is breathtaking and they write stunning music. I was hoping to see them play all of Subterranea live in Bury on Sat 10th Nov (the last time they will ever do so) but thought I was away. When I found out I wasn't, it had sold out and I'm gutted. See them live at least once in your life!
I am a German. I can´t read and write english wrong! I am glad, that someone wrote back and understands me. This is the good thing of the net. IQ one of my favourites. I have buy 6 CD from my own Money. Go to record store and something else!
The best thing for walking long distances, forever, on own feet or on skis. The maximum speed is on the 10-th minute, starts on 8:54 till 9:55, and when John and Mike play beside each other, between 13:38 and 15:23. Another such is Deep Purple - Child In Time, for smaller distances.
Thankyou so much for this video, i know you posted it 3 years ago but I have just come across it now!!!!! I love IQ, seen them 4 times now, and they just get better and better, and this track is one I especially love (next to Harvest of Souls) Thanks again!
It's so amazing song! Welcome IQ in Russia! Just for it one I should go to their concert. Peter's voice is here more expressive than on the album. All of these instrumentalists are dressed in identical white shirts, they're modest but great professionals! At 8:53, Mike makes a gesture with his hand - be ready, right now we'll do a superdrive! Under this drive part I want to ride on the highway on a motorcycle, or at least on a bike on the cycle track. By the way, this is one of my favorite things when traveling long distances, including when I ride a bicycle. And the speed of movement is directly proportional to the tempo of the music.
Always thought it was pretty clever of them to craft that section towards the end (13:38-15:30), where they vamp the 14/16 + 12/16 + 14/16 + 14/16 riff. The combination of Martin repeating the motif up a minor 3rd every time this 4 bar pattern repeats, along with the notes of the bass-line, results in a series of modulations of the overall key signature, which, at a certain point, actually ends up being lowered by a half-step (a common trick in the iQ catalog) before working its way back up to C# Mixolydian. What an interesting juxtaposition of 2 independently modulating parts! Then, finally at the end of this section, we have the last 2 chords (Bb & G#) replaced with an Ab(add9)/Bb & a G, before resolving on a C that paves way for the return of the album's signature progression (C, Am, G, F). Fantastic!
Not much of a theoretical musician here, but can one say that this section is in 27/8 time? Or it doesn't really work that way? This is probably my favorite instrumental passage by IQ, tied with the one in It All Stops Here.
Да чего ж потрясающая композиция! Welcome IQ in Russia!
IQ is the best neo-progressive group I heard. Why it's unknown in Russia? In my current life I won't be a musician, it's precisely. But if I would play in a band in my next life my band will play such music as IQ.
RECUERDO CUANDO ESCUCHE POR PRIMERA VEZ TALES FOR THE LUSH ATTIC, ME PARECIO UN SONIDO MUY PARTICULAR, CON OBVIAS INFLUENCIAS DE GENESIS. QUE HACE MUCHO NO SENTIA..... ES DIFICIL DESCRIBIR CON PALABRAS...OBVIAMENTE IQ ES UNA MARAVILLOSA BANDA DE PROG ROCK QUE ME SORPRENDIO GRATAMENTE Y SE CONVIRTIO EN PARTE DE MI MUSICA FAVORITA , OTRA COSA POSITIVA ES QUE EL PRESTIGIO Y CALIDAD DE BANDAS( APARTE OBVIAMENTE DEL ASPECTO MUSICAL) ASI SE MANTIENE POR EL HECHO DE NO SER TAN FAMOSAS NI MASIVAS ESO PARA MI ES UN PUNTO A FAVOR

@@jacekmarczyk4436 In other words, most current day brains are too lazy for such arts & crafts....
This band definitely deserves to play in huge venues. Beautiful music !
Esta es una de las mas Hermosas Suites que se han realizado en el Rock Progresivo Sinfónico¡¡, su feeling, y su bucolismo es un Viajeee¡¡
The most under estimated band of the world.
Real Skillers they are !!

Zeitlos schön. Großartige Künstler. John on bass Martin on keys, Cookie on drums and Peters amazing voice❤🎉👍🎹🎤🎼🎸

Seeing IQ for the first time now in March in Sweden. Can't wait, and I hope they play this beatiful gem of a song

So unglaublich unterschätzt, diese Band! Ein Kunstwerk!
This is surely one of the best songs ever written by IQ, if not the best !
Absolute masterpiece from start to beautiful finish IQ set the benchmark so high time and again

Always amazing to see live! Love this tune as well. Nice work IQ
Fantastic, what a sound! Can hardly believe this is all entirely live.
Sublime music, IQ, I love you!
Absolutely breath-taking at times, especially at about 15:29 into the song. Such depth of emotion welling up, like a volcano of sublime musical power!
Excellent!!!! What a BLESSING!!!
This group is FANTASTIC !!!

Why won't they come to Sweden!!!!!!

Nerdy question: any hint for counting or the pattern of the accents from 2:29 to 2:56? Thanks!
Subterranea -"The Lamb lies down on Broadway" of 90's :) Mebe even better?!
Better??? I don't think so!
Peerless...no chance for the cream of the neo-prog crowd to match this. Shows how much they have matured as a live band, possibly beyond anyone else.
@habbonatica Me alegro que te guste mi amigo:))
No idea why i deleted the first comment. Anyway... this is Nichols best vocal performance of this song. Middle section 5:30 - 8:40 :D
