I was born in Leiden and still live there, my family came to Leiden in the 15th century and never left.
I did law school at Leiden university.
The keys are the sign of Saint Peter, the patron saint of the town. The gate you saw is the Morspoort. Mors means marches. The mill you saw is called The Put and it grinds flower for a local baker, where my wife and I get our fresh bread.
Yes it is a replica and it stands on the spot where Rembrandt’s father was a miller 😊. I could go on, but Leiden is great.

The keys in the coat of arms of Leiden are explained simply: Saint Peter, the keeper of the gate to Heaven is the patron saint of Leiden. The keys are one of his attributes. So you see them everywhere.

Yep, they needed to move because they lost half of their flock to the liberty in Amsterdam. Then, when they supplemented their flock with Dutch, German and French believers to about the same number, sailed to Plymouth and boarded the Mayflower. Not a well versed navigator because they didn't land where they supposed to.

@@Paul_C Leiden was also much to free for them. They didn't like religious freedom that much, they like their own religion. They were puritans, prudes, the Dutch protestants weren't that hung up on sexuality, whitin marriage or to find a spouse lots of liberties were allowed and the Pilgrim fathers feared the effect on their children.

Leiden had been sieged by the Spanish army for a year causing a famine in the city, but the people of Leiden held out until a certain Willem van Oranje had the levees "stabbed" so the area around was inundated and the city could be liberated by a fleet of flatbottoms. This was an important turning point in the 80-years war for indepence allthough there were 72 years more to go.
It got it's university, the first in the Netherlands, as a reward for holding out, and it became a very important one soon as the Dutch Republic became a frontrunner in the early scientific revolution.

And I think you did a nice mini-tour. Plus, the savory pancakes and gelato look tasty. So, you'll have to return on October 3rd and celebrate the freedom from the Spanish siege while eating hutspot and herring. 😁

It's just one of the best cities. The center is essentially a maze of cute little historic things, you can live there for years and still discover new stuff. Could not have wished for a better place to grow up in. It was idyllic, quiet and at its peak beauty in the 90's. But you only realize your luck after the fact, don't you? Now it's popular, with everything that comes with it.

Only €2,- for such a gigantic stroopwafel should be verboden: they are ruining the market. I bet on the Champs-Elysées these would easily go for 16 USD. If you saw movie Oppenheimer in a Dutch bioskoop you might have heard the people laughing at the Dutch he's supposed to be speaking. Calico cats (lapjeskatten) are almost always female.
