Erik, this brought tears to me eyes. I've been watching you since way back in the tiny apartment and you were lifeguarding at a pool. To see you on top of Kilimanjaro, literally on top, of the world is so symbolic. You've worked hard, worked through the obstacles, handled the difficulties and heartbreak of life, believed in yourself, kept at it and gone, up, up, up, and you always stress that you don't do it alone, that you have people in front, beside and behind you all the way. What an inspiration you are my young friend! Keep spreading your message!

The camera crew deserves a lot of credit! Great video, especially the glaciers, and carrying all that gear up the hill is a task.. I walked up Kilimanjaro on the Lemosho route a few years ago when I was sixty. We did it in seven days, not nine. A few suggestions if you choose to take the walk. First, take the longest route you can for which you have the time and money-that will increase your odds of success. Don’t dwell on the cold or the elevation; it only makes it worse for you and more so on those you’re walking with. Occasionally you will be breathing hard and you will be a bit chilly, just like everyone else. Instead, go slow; look at the sights, chat with the guide and porters, enjoy the trip. Also, book a local company, it’s way cheaper and you will learn more about Tanzania. (Thirty-five yrs ago I was a Peace Corps volunteer in East Africa.) Don’t wear safari gear like the narrator-our porters told me it’s insulting. Learn a little bit of Swahili online, the porters will love it. Use your old boots, old parka, and old sleeping bag, and plan on giving them to your porters (who desperately need them) at the end of your trip, and do that away from the guide. Otherwise many guides will take the donated gear and sell it. And if you tip money, then the guide and the company most likely will get all of it. Don’t be intimidated by the Western Breach. At its worst places, it’s barely class 2, and using even helmets is overkill. Everyone in my group made it to Uhuru: Haraka haraka haina baraka, Pole pole ndio mwendo. The trip is fun, and you should take this walk.

I successfully climbed Kili in 2015 at age 55. And the cold--like you--I can't describe how bitterly cold it was (and I'm Canadian!). On my ascent, in the middle of the night, I thought I would just stop, keel over and die and my team mates would find my body the next day when coming back down the mountain. That's how cold it was!! I persevered and made it to Uhuru Peak. Congrats to anyone who treks Kili. She''s a beast to be sure!

Erik, I lived on Kilimanjaro (at Marangu) as a teenager. Back in the the 1960s, most of the climbing expeditions began at Marangu, so I was in touch with the whole experience of climbers regularly passing my friends and me on the soccer field. In my own attempt for the summit just before coming back to the States, I got past the third hut to 17,500 feet, an hour and a half from the top, but had thrown up 30 times in 30 minutes. Altitude sickness hit me big time, so I was forced to turn back. Still, this is a mountain climb that is exquisitely beautiful, and doable for many people with good health who do not get crippled by the altitude. It is one of life’s sweet pleasures, as you have shown in this EXCELLENT video. No need for ropes or pitons, it’s in a stable country with lovely people for the most part, seasoned porters and guides are there to assist, and this would be a terrific bucket list goal for some of your viewers here. I have traveled now in 40 countries, and I often think the most beautiful place I have ever been is lying in the alpine meadow at about 9400 feet, just above the first hut, called Mandara. A close second place would be getting toward the top of the gorgeous mountain and beholding the royal blue sky during the daytime, darker because there is less atmosphere and you’re closer to outerspace up there. Go try it! Na bahati mzuri! (And good luck!)

This kind of pure isolation I've felt on my cruise on a Baltic Sea, on a small boat, when there was only water everywhere. Nothing else but water and the yacht I was in. It was peaceful and kinda frightening at the same time. I've also felt this way while being on a small island when there was no one else besides my crew and it was so small that you could see the borders of it and walk it all in 15 minutes. It feels like you've reached the end of the world or another planet 😀 You're an inspiration to dream and make it happen! Keep doing the great job Erik! Congratulations!!!

Hopefully while I am still Fit. We took a different route (With Cabins) then the one in this video but watching this brings back all kinds of great memories from the 90's trip to climb Kili ! To date I can say it was the best trip of my life !

I just read an article yesterday in our local newspaper here in South Africa, about a woman who just completed her climb, and thought that's great. I can do that - climb Mount Kilimanjaro. I just turned 60, and I know I can still do it. I have to start some rigorous training, though. It seemed like I was climbing with you, and, out of breath when you were. Thank you Erik, for this video, beautifully done. Thanks!

Hey, I know I’m not who you’re asking but I was at the summit recently and I thought you should know there’s been such heavy snow most things have been buried but other than that if your father put the ashes there I’m sure that that’s where they’ll stay. People are very respectful of what others leave there as long as it’s not trash.

I describe altitude sickness as the worst hangover you’ve ever had...and drinking more won’t help. It’s difficult and painful to do anything. Your head pounds, you feel like vomiting, and you have no energy. If you ever take young children on vacation at high elevation and they say they don’t feel good then remember your worst hangover and that’s probably how they feel. Oh yeah, and your fingers tingle like someone is poking them with needles. It’s an awful feeling.
