The finish of the courtyard walls is reminiscent of a traditional charred-wood technique that prevents rot and insect damage. I saw a carpenter in Kentucky who used Japanese and Korean construction methods to build his own homestead, and the idea stuck with me. Simply lovely. Congrats!
As someone who spent years studying Japanese, my dreams of visiting Japan were dashed by the pandemic and my excitement has burned down to embers. But your channel has been a light in the dark that keeps my excitement kindled. Seeing your dream house is really special, and I thank you for creating your content from the bottom of my heart.
Exactly my case! Pewdiepie moving there appearing on my timeline and now this video, is making me re-consider continuing aiming for this dream. May be a sign for me to not give up before even trying 😊
This house is a delight to see, such a well-thought out home, which blends the comforts of modern construction technologies with the quintessential Japanese aesthetic and the workings of the family perfectly! A flagship example of what Architecture can (and should) be, congratulations to you all and all the team involved in bringing this to life!
I always had this idea that I'd want to design my own house but after seeing this I'd rather let pros handle it. They did such a great job, I love all the window access into the central garden and the overall layout. Grats Dogen!
I went and watched the Tokyo Lens one since this video was originally not working for me (it is now!) Still a wonderful glimpse into the design, construction, and "walkthrough" experiences. I once stayed with a host family in Japan whose father worked as a builder and he wore those traditional shoes and even the tradition outfit (baggy pants, wrapped top). There is truly a pride and uniqueness to building techniques like that. Congrats on the house! Before you moved to the apartment in Beppu, I remember you talking about a house one day for the family. Thank you for blazing that trail
I caught myself smiling ear to ear watching this. Not just because of the serenity the architecture & natural elements give off but also about the whole idea of welcoming others in this house. What a dream come true~
You didn't just build your dream house, this is my dream house as well. Wish my husband and I could afford something like this. I just totally feel the 'love the style of old japanese houses and the comfort of new ones' and you actually found a company that would give you exactly that. Absolute dream come true.
Don't frame yourself with "wish we could afford". Instead try "how can we afford it?" and creative juices will start flowing. I believe that you'll make it happen in the future!
@@n347f0x Thanks for your positive attitude, it's not really a problem of the finances and more of the fact, that my husband always says he never wants to build and live in a house 🙃 He despises the idea of not being able to move around, but we will see, maybe his wishes will change as he gets older, but I won't force him. I did show him this video though and he had to agree on how awesome Dougens house is 😆😆 That's a start
@@captainkacke1651 I agree with you that that's an age thing. Someday he will want to settle in the nice place :) Best of luck to you and have a nice day!
Something that isn't getting enough mention, I feel, is the external walls of the interior garden, that burnt wood style is /beautiful/ and complements the house so well.
Omg that house is amazing. I love how personalized it is. You can tell there’s a lot of thought put into everything. The architect is a genius. I’m so happy for you
There is such a calm and relaxing feeling throughout your house. And it seems like the architect has designed in everything you need for a minimalist lifestyle. I love that the house is essentially designed around the courtyard providing access to nature and natural light. One thing that intrigues me, is the family closet. Is that working for you, now you have moved in? Surely there are times when more than one of you needs to be in there.
What a stunning and warm place to call home… I hope these home-builders get the attention they deserve and continue to grow because more homes need to be built with this level of soul and attention. It doesn’t matter what lies beyond the home’s walls because you’d created a small pocket of paradise. I’m truly speechless.
it's the best house tour i have ever watched. idk but it has such a calming sense to it and it also looks realistic (what i mean is it has this feeling of being buildable because some of the houses that u see in tours are so expensive-looking that u can't imagine building such a house yourself). get's 10/10 from me!! 👍👍👍
Man, what a beautiful home. I've always been into architecture and especially spatial planning, and all these little innovations were so clever and out of the box. I'm in love with the bathroom and it's extra little courtyard. The house has so much character and I don't doubt you are extremely happy with it!
Dogen is now so Nihongo Jouzu that he is transcending the ability to speak English. Observe the way he pluralises the word "house". The next step is to abandon pluralisation altogether.
Feels like I am the only one who got feelings of claustrophobia while watching this video. It just feels so cramped and small. I am a tall and big guy so I'd never be able to fit myself in here. Just watching these 3 buddies trying to navigate the narrowness of this house was funny.
@@anantsharma7955 I felt the same.. The house is truly gorgeous in design but even through the screen I personally feel very uneasy and cramped by the space
Yes, I also thought it was very cramped. There's also a lot of opening things to access other things that would get exhausting after a while. The architecture is beautiful, but the space has to be bigger. Also, walking across the whole house to access my wardrobe? Nuh uh
I am literally speechless, this is one of the prettiest homes I have ever seen in my life, at the "kitchen reveal" I almost cried. You also built my absolute dream house.
(I just finished 7 years in Japan). This was so satisfying to watch. The lack of curtains. The lack of aluminum and odd mixed materials. The lack of clunky eye-sores. Just. Wow!! I didn't think a house like this was possible in Japan.
As an architectural designer this has to bring the biggest smile to the person who designed the home. To have the client (in this case Dogen) talk so highly of the house and be happy with it has to be the most gratifing feeling ever. Honestly an amazing home, just by looking at it you can tell it has a warm cozy feeling and so functional. Hope you enjoy it for many many years Dogen.
Honestly I'm not so sure. From purely aesthetic point of view that central garden is really smart, you get light, and private garden view from everywhere. But it totally destroys utilization of space in this quite small lot. You are forced to use a lot of corridors, which are mostly just waste of space. Also those kid's bedrooms, they are just way too small. Especially when they grow up, they are going to need space in their room to have desk to study in peace, use pc, or whatever. Or just keeping their stuff. I also have issues with one closet, it's going to be inconvenient, with potential traffic jams, and people don't only change after shower. I would have just pushed garden to one side of the building, or potentially L shaped garden, one side being slimmer. This would give you much more open usable space. Not as interesting, but you just can't experiment too much when you don't have that much space and you need to have space for family.
The house looks absolutely beautiful! A lot of genius architecture. I love homes like these that gives immense thought and consideration for everyone living in it, guests included.
This is such an aesthetically pleasing and well-thought out house that it's honestly amazing the amount of details the architect was able to consider and implement with the "UA-camr" lifestyle and ethos you value the most. Well done and congrats!
When, I was a preteen in the late 80s I met my first Japanese friend. 30 plus years later and 2 trips to Japan among work, life, kids and family, and we remain friends. I always dreamed of a life in Japan, but the stars aligned differently for me. This house is amazing. Somehow you built the house that lived in my dreams. Congratulations. I’m older but feel young and I want to be just like you when I grow up. :)
I'm an architecture graduate and as a fan of your channel it's lovely see these two worlds come together haha. Especially love Japanese architecture and seeing it from your perspective as the client has taught me a lot. Love the lower window overlooking the courtyard and having the courtyard in general viewable around the house. The architect clearly made it the centerpiece and accounted for the beauty of nature in Japanese seasons. That black contrast with the white and timber interior is my favorite thing about all this.
I heard about your troubles with organising the project with the Japanese banks on stream so I'm super glad to see you've finally got everything together!
Congratulations, your new house is absolutely beautiful. By coincidence, I have also just finished building my own dream house in Japan. Some of the aesthetic it similar, but yours definitely has more striking use of Traditional and Modern Japanese elements. (Ours is is more of a blend, although. Maybe more”rural-modern”..?). So…when are you going to show us the construction process vids??
Well, I’ve checked out your new house too. And I have to say, Dogen’s definitely cost more. But yours looks pretty sweet too. Ill head back and check out the demolition & framing etc vids later. Anyway, cool stuff. Now I just need my own dream house.
@@Dogen Glad to hear it. I’m interested to see how your experience during the construction was similar/different from my own. But it’s a great feeling, eh?
When Pewdiepie do another house tour tier list, I can definitely see this as an S Tier house, really amazing and everything looks really thought out! Congrats!
I've never really thought about my own dream house before watching this video. I mean I come from a middle class background as it is but it used to be that every dream house I saw before was just so focused on the money and shine and lavishness that it completely pushed me away. "What's the most expensive thing we put here?", "What's the thing here that would take the cool factor to eleven?" - None of these things felt like home to me. But this video is different. It's so well thought out that I could feel the soul and philosophy of the owner and the designer at every inch of the house, even through a screen. All those windows that I first thought were weirdly sized and placed all click into place once you consider yourself "in the moment" as then they would greatly enhance the experience of being there. Dogen's video has finally got me thinking about a house of my own. Every place he showed like the family closet, I could see why he made it that way and how our different ways of thinking would shape the place. It's such an incredible feeling and so inspirational that I've never felt it before. Thank you, Dogen. You and your family deserve all the happiness in the world.
It's a delight seeing such a well designed and thoroughly practical home, especially with how the architects incorporated all that you ask from them. A job well done to the team, and congratulations on making this happen! I'd love to be able to see it in person myself, but I'm satisfied being able to watch it through this video 😄
This is definitely one of the most beautifully thought out and executed homes I've seen, Japanese or otherwise. Every room has got a purpose, and some rooms, like your daughters', are even future-proofed with easy ways to adapt. Congratulations on this wonderful new place!!
I work for an isp so I'm wondering where the router and access points are? In belgium the router is usually located in the technical room next to the gas boiler, distribution board and solar panel adapter and battery etc Access points are placed where the rssi gets too low to make add an additional wifi signal provider with the same ssid
I'm genuinely impressed Norm and Manu didn't ask how much you're charging for rent for that guestroom XD. Looks amazing Dogen. As an aspiring home owner I'm definitely envious.
Congratulations Dogen! I remember when you released your video on buying a house and your experience with the bank that was happy to finance you. At that time Japan content was mostly tour-based content and the most we could see of Japanese houses were either rental units or guesthouses (if you can call that a 'house'). Now you've come so far and built a place you can call your own, I'm really looking to laughing my ass off at videos you're going to film in your new office.
Your house is really beautiful! I used to look up Japanese houses on Pinterest a lot because they look so sleek and neat. Also I love how Japanese architecture firms blend the nature and the house and also how they make use of the concept of space or 'ma' 間 in their design
Dogen, this house is amazing, it's beautiful and I'm so bloody jealous But... Your daughters are going to hate you when they're older for the lack of privacy!
With how the rooms are closed off, it won't be sound proof at all. For teenagers that's kinda important. Also not having your own closet to keep private items or being able to make sure you sister doesn't use your clothing unasked is also gonna bring a bit of friction. their space is also quite small. There's more space for the guest than the daughters together
It was never directed mentioned but I really love the Japanese castle style setup of the house where there isn’t one central hallway but all the rooms are connected by a hallway that resembles an engawa hallway.
actually i'm thinking the price is one thing everyone is willing to know. even tho we all expect something really high, which is well deserved looking at the final result
@@Radescha I may be wrong but $500k where I live will definitely get you a very nice house much bigger than his. I live a couple hours south of him. But if he only met with one architect/builder then it’s possible he paid more than he should’ve. Hopefully Dogen will tell us the price!

Hey its not playing for me, it says "this video is unavailable on this device". I'm trying to watch it from my phone
@@sakura0055 Me too. Can't watch it on my phone and on the tv either 😭
I can't watch it on any device, including my PC.
@@sakura0055 are you using an Android phone? Cause I'm getting the same error on mine
Hm is this video somehow restricted - all I get is "This video is unavailable on this device" - ??? I've tried my computer and my phone and get the same message ???
You used to be into martial arts and tricking Dogen? I humbly request, your finest backflip
Iirc, he had to quit due to training injuries and hasn't done it for years at this point. So it's probably better for him to not yeet himself backwards nowadays
just check out the earliest video on this channel
Hi Ross
Didn't expect to see you here
He was a technician. I learned how to do a btwist and a 540 from Dogen. I also learned my first Japanese and developed and interest in Japanese Aesthetics. Now I have 3 kids and haven't done a flip in a while either. It's been a wild, and good ride.
He looks like he would split in half if he tripped.
Thanks dogen for sharing your life with us!
I have been watching you for years now, you have inspired me to follow my dreams to Japan, I’m not rich by far but I hope that even my small donation towards you along with my patreon subscription, will help you to stay living free with your family and to be able to continue working from home making your amazing videos.
Your awesome 👍
素敵なお家ですね!おめでとうございます!🎉
The finish of the courtyard walls is reminiscent of a traditional charred-wood technique that prevents rot and insect damage. I saw a carpenter in Kentucky who used Japanese and Korean construction methods to build his own homestead, and the idea stuck with me. Simply lovely. Congrats!
Yakisugi is the name, right? And you're referring to Mr. Chickadee in Kentucky..
I also noticed. So do you get black when you lean on it or touch unintentionally while watering the plants or so?
This house has a "Lofi"-Vibe. It feels incredibly calm.
素敵なご自宅ですね!
石造の温泉にとても惹かれました。中庭の大きな窓を障子にされたのも“侘び寂び”を感じて凄く魅力的です。
日本語字幕有難うございます!
I can relate. Stay strong and believe in your dream, it will come true one day 🙏
Exactly my case! Pewdiepie moving there appearing on my timeline and now this video, is making me re-consider continuing aiming for this dream. May be a sign for me to not give up before even trying 😊
lol I lived in Japan for 5 years and can only speak basic
This house is a delight to see, such a well-thought out home, which blends the comforts of modern construction technologies with the quintessential Japanese aesthetic and the workings of the family perfectly! A flagship example of what Architecture can (and should) be, congratulations to you all and all the team involved in bringing this to life!
I always had this idea that I'd want to design my own house but after seeing this I'd rather let pros handle it. They did such a great job, I love all the window access into the central garden and the overall layout. Grats Dogen!
i think the architect and he were more of a team
I went and watched the Tokyo Lens one since this video was originally not working for me (it is now!) Still a wonderful glimpse into the design, construction, and "walkthrough" experiences. I once stayed with a host family in Japan whose father worked as a builder and he wore those traditional shoes and even the tradition outfit (baggy pants, wrapped top). There is truly a pride and uniqueness to building techniques like that.
Congrats on the house! Before you moved to the apartment in Beppu, I remember you talking about a house one day for the family. Thank you for blazing that trail
Same for me. Wonder if it's still encoding the video or something.
Same issue for me
@Dogen Help us, senpai!
Same here. Unavailable on my device.
same here
I love how you planned the space to grow with your daughters, it's really sweet and smart. All the best to you and your family!
Someday he will want to settle in the nice place :)
Best of luck to you and have a nice day!
Something that isn't getting enough mention, I feel, is the external walls of the interior garden, that burnt wood style is /beautiful/ and complements the house so well.
Omg that house is amazing. I love how personalized it is. You can tell there’s a lot of thought put into everything. The architect is a genius. I’m so happy for you
Congratulations on your new house Kevin! You made me want to have a house in Japan as well 😂
There is such a calm and relaxing feeling throughout your house.
Officialy my dream house 🤩
What a stunning and warm place to call home… I hope these home-builders get the attention they deserve and continue to grow because more homes need to be built with this level of soul and attention.
It doesn’t matter what lies beyond the home’s walls because you’d created a small pocket of paradise. I’m truly speechless.
it's the best house tour i have ever watched. idk but it has such a calming sense to it and it also looks realistic (what i mean is it has this feeling of being buildable because some of the houses that u see in tours are so expensive-looking that u can't imagine building such a house yourself). get's 10/10 from me!! 👍👍👍
道元さんの家の壁、角が丸く仕上げてあって細部にわたるこだわりを感じました。本当に素晴らしいお住まい!
Man, what a beautiful home. I've always been into architecture and especially spatial planning, and all these little innovations were so clever and out of the box. I'm in love with the bathroom and it's extra little courtyard. The house has so much character and I don't doubt you are extremely happy with it!
Dogen using japanese words to explain things even though he's a native English speaker is so precious. I do it all the time too lol
Dogen is now so Nihongo Jouzu that he is transcending the ability to speak English. Observe the way he pluralises the word "house". The next step is to abandon pluralisation altogether.
Can't wrap my head around having a guest room larger than my 2 daughters' single room, the transitions are lovely though
Nuh uh
@@anantsharma7955 well it does give you the ultimate japanese experience.
@@anantsharma7955 you're not the only one bro. we have storage rooms of this much hieght here in india, lol.
3 minutes in and I'm already blown away. Incredible stuff, Dogen. Very happy for you and your family!
ビフォーアフターで観るようなお洒落な家だなぁ。いつかこういう感じの家建てたい。
This is just unreal. And it’s so precious seeing how happy this makes you, and how much love and attention you put into making it ❤️
It's cute how dogen had in mind his friends while building his life house haha
The house is amazing! Happy for you 👌
障子の使い方がお洒落で思わず唸りました。洗濯物をすぐ吊せる工夫も素晴らしいです。
@@DoctorEbot Thanks for checking out my place too! 🍻
美杉の木を使ってたね!♥️
More info coming soon!
@@Dogen Glad to hear it. I’m interested to see how your experience during the construction was similar/different from my own. But it’s a great feeling, eh?
Beautiful house. Would love it if you could make a video about the cost of everything and the process of choosing the land. Very interested
When Pewdiepie do another house tour tier list, I can definitely see this as an S Tier house, really amazing and everything looks really thought out! Congrats!
S tier is insulting because it's a triple S.
I love how it feels modern but still retains Japanese architecture in so many places. Nicely done!
日本人が誰もが憧れる家です。まるで有名な芸術家、小説家が隠れて創作する高級旅館のようだし。いいなぁ~~
Woah, that's sick. It never occured to me that your YT channel was successful enough to allow projects like this. That's really great.
This is the best most thoughtful designed house I’ve ever witnessed.
This is definitely one of the most beautifully thought out and executed homes I've seen, Japanese or otherwise. Every room has got a purpose, and some rooms, like your daughters', are even future-proofed with easy ways to adapt. Congratulations on this wonderful new place!!
日本語字幕ありがとうございます♪
素敵なお家ですね!
I'm definitely interested in the cost of land, building, sq m2, etc. looks great!
和風建築の意匠は残したまま現代の利便性をちゃんと確保しているのマジで理想的な家ですね
I never thought that a house could move me and yet here I am in complete awe. Congratulation Dogen, this is absolutely incredible!
i've been following your channel for almost two years and seeing you having your own dream house is truly fantastic.
おめでとうございます、ドウゲンさん!👏🎉
I work for an isp so I'm wondering where the router and access points are?
In belgium the router is usually located in the technical room next to the gas boiler, distribution board and solar panel adapter and battery etc
Access points are placed where the rssi gets too low to make add an additional wifi signal provider with the same ssid
Will talk about this!
I do Network Administration and that was my first thought as well.
I love how he even turns a house tour into a Japanese lesson along the way
This house looks and feels so tranquil and amazing, it's like a modern and yet traditional Japanese hotel! Truly incredible!
I'm genuinely impressed Norm and Manu didn't ask how much you're charging for rent for that guestroom XD. Looks amazing Dogen. As an aspiring home owner I'm definitely envious.
Usually it's women getting hype for house tours/home makeovers but it's really cute seeing guys get hype over their friends house.
This house is amazing. I've always wanted to design a house around a central courtyard garden.
The way they react is really awesome and would make you proud of your house.
家を紹介してこんなにリアクションしてくれたら気持ちいいですよね。
Your house is really beautiful! I used to look up Japanese houses on Pinterest a lot because they look so sleek and neat. Also I love how Japanese architecture firms blend the nature and the house and also how they make use of the concept of space or 'ma' 間 in their design
Dogen, this house is amazing, it's beautiful and I'm so bloody jealous
But...
Your daughters are going to hate you when they're older for the lack of privacy!
When they're older, they can turn the one bedroom into two - I don't really get the lack of privacy?
With how the rooms are closed off, it won't be sound proof at all. For teenagers that's kinda important. Also not having your own closet to keep private items or being able to make sure you sister doesn't use your clothing unasked is also gonna bring a bit of friction.
their space is also quite small. There's more space for the guest than the daughters together
@@canwejustnot yep. And the guests have an entire en suite which won't be used often
as a one piece fan who just randomly got this video recommended I was surprised to see the one and only ohara make an epic appearance
Congratulations, Dogen! Wishing you all the best with your health, family and further accomplishments in your career!
Stay safe!
カッコよすぎでしょ
日本人でも憧れちゃう
It was never directed mentioned but I really love the Japanese castle style setup of the house where there isn’t one central hallway but all the rooms are connected by a hallway that resembles an engawa hallway.
Man, this would be expensive in the states. I can’t imagine what it would cost in Japan…this is such a cool mix of modern and traditional design
actually i'm thinking the price is one thing everyone is willing to know. even tho we all expect something really high, which is well deserved looking at the final result
I think we might still be under 1M USD, but not sure. I am however sure we are below 2M
Beppu isn’t as expensive as other big cities in Japan. I’d guess it’d cost about $500k.
@@rzadigi that cheap? wow even with a custom design and a dedicated architect?
@@Radescha I may be wrong but $500k where I live will definitely get you a very nice house much bigger than his. I live a couple hours south of him. But if he only met with one architect/builder then it’s possible he paid more than he should’ve. Hopefully Dogen will tell us the price!
おめでとう!!!!めっちゃ美しい!
Buying an old Japanese house in the countryside and have it renovated is one of my dreams, though.
Amazing house, and I agree with Norm: incredible kitchen, particularly that pantry with desk! And the onsen bath? Perfect for Beppu. Thanks for sharing all the design details!
This man is literally living my ideal life! Thank you for being a great role model 道元先生!
本当に日本に住んでいらっしゃるとは思いませんでした。

This house looks absolutely amazing and I can't wait to see the various new content that you are planning to create from this incredibly well thought out house design. As soon as your health gets better of course. Speedy recovery and may great inspiration strike you, good sir.
Amazing man, the fact that you thought about your friends just as much as you did about yourself in this project is so cool wish you all the success.
