  • Hey guys! This is has been a long work in progress over the last few months mainly involving the slow design process! luckily printing it only takes about a week and a half and assembly time is even faster! let me know what you think!

    • @captainKts

      i really like this idea. the problem is: the signal to the Rx will only work at surface level. which means: you would need to send a string of code for the entire dive, and then on top of that, hope your sub never strikes any underwater objects before ascending back to the surface to transmit collected data back to you. I see a way around this by creating a follow raft with an umbilical cord containing the power source, solar panel and charger, Rx and telemetry units, sonar sounder, and maby a few navigation LEDs. the cord would be approx 50-100 feet in length and would be slightly lighter than neutral buoyancy with foam rings every 10 feet or so, to keep from snagging on sub-surface objects.

    I Loved the video. I have always built my Fishing, and Shrimp Boats the Hard way. One scale board, and hand made board, Piece, and Nail at a time, It takes a lot longer, but The results are Phenomenal, and The Detail is Second to None. I am proud of my way, but your hi-tech way is Great too. If you break a piece of the hull, you can just print a replacement.

    In case you didn't know this, The Lulzbot Taz6 had a bit of a firmware design flaw that causes that vertical ringing in your prints. If you want to get rid of it look up how to change the bed heater from "bang bang" mode to PID mode. It's a very simple firmware tweak and it completely removes the print lines.

    If you have any extra channels on your transmitter/receiver, you could in a storage frame for the lifeboat you made. That would make an interesting way to get a line in from the tug if there aren't any drones available. I also think a kind of leash could be made for drones in cases where they get stuck in a tree!

    I know im never gonna do it, but the idea of making a gas powered one, with a F/N/R transmission and sterndrives and a watercooling loop has always fascinated me. BTW im surprised with how strong it is, I really thought it was gonna crack. Also, instead of lead, you could exchange ballast for more range. Probably useless but the amount of LiPos you could get inside there is insane.

    Hey Peter, just a tip. If you're going to go so far as to use a respirator when using the acetone (good for you for looking out for your health) you should probably get ahold of some organic vapor cartridges. They're less than $10 on amazon and fit on the mask you already have. 3M part # 6001. Those pink P100's are only good for filtering particulates.

    been working on a boat project on and off for a while now and have the whole hull done but haven really had the time to figure out the drive shaft situation. could you make a video about this? not really familiar with how they work and keep out the water and everything

    Wait wait wait... did you film 5:37 after you had lost the prop? Because if it's filmed chronologically the prop fell off before the boat was even in the water. If you pause around 5:40, no prop on the left side.

  • @shadow5oh

    Way cool. I didn't think tugs were made to have a planing hull. I'm sure with a bit of ballast and perhaps a bit of scale speed, it will be a great to sail.

  • @daren9938
    @daren9938 7 років тому

    I have utterly no clue about RC boats but from my engineering class if you put it on a gear train, I will have less speed which is realistic and also more torque which is even more realistic! It's a really good build anywayz :)

    Came out nice. Is there any way to really smooth out 3d printed items? Brush and acetone all over?

  • @azgarogly
    @azgarogly 7 років тому

    Using live ammunition as a ballast is just great :)
    As far as I am concerned, the shape of stern part would be with decline over the props, so it wouldn't upnose so hard on higher speeds :)

    • @PeterSripol
      @PeterSripol  7 років тому

      yep! if the lipos short out on the water "KABOOM"! I may update the stern to reflect the changes, She also could use alot more ballast in the bow, it was super high above the waterline in the video!

    just a suggestion you should use overlapping joints for your hull for better water proofing, easier allignment and strength of joint. really surprised you and others do not do this in their multipiece constructions. then a bilge pump for any water in the hull. also some bilge keels will help with roll stability.

    Very cool, Can you make a fire boat set up with a front fire hose and cannon? Are you going to add a sump pump motor set up for the rear to keep the water out if you happen to get any in the boat?

    If you counter rotate your props it will run way better. The wobble was mainly related to that.

    I see information on what kind of 3D printer you're using, and information on the transmitter you're using (I use a TGY-i10 myself, by the way), information on the cameras and microphone, tripod, editing software... but I don't see anything about the laser engraver/etcher/cutter you're using. What kind of engraver/cutter is that?
