  • Have you ever wondered the essence of the traditional Hapkido stance?
There is a reason why hapkido-in adopt a projected posture similar to what you may have seen in some styles of Hapkido. It goes back to the martial art's Japanese roots.
Hapkido (although sometimes controvertial) came from a form of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. It is why some trademark hapkido techniques are very similar to popular Japanese martial arts.
The same goes for reason behind the traditional hapkido stance

My dad taught a few HopKiDo classes for awhile when I was about 9-13. He only taught us the guard with closed fists for basically all general stuff for some reason. I was surprised when I started the video and you guys were in that other stance with hands further out. We also bent our knees considerably more and turned our non dominant foot slightly sideways. He was a huge fan of JeetKuneDo and kickboxing as well. He only had a brown belt in HapKiDo as I remember it but said he got it first thinking it would be a good way to branch into a career learning multiple martial arts. He ended up getting trained in a few different martial disciplines but I don’t think he ever got a black belt in anything. He really did not like sparring or even letting students spar. Everything was very controlled with lots of stance work. I’m very interested in studying HapKiDo on my own and getting a black belt. Because my father was teaching the course I would get extra training and be held to a higher standard and because I struck another kid while sparring, with a proper punch to the side of his head, after he bit me while sparring (he had anger problems) I was held back as a yellow belt for basically forever and then my father quit teaching the course because the main instructor was back. He kept training me and my siblings for awhile until he started another job and eventually the lessons stopped. It always felt like I was losing something when I stopped being interested in martial arts and training and doing stance work. I’m getting back into it as a part of sobriety. Thanks for the videos.

Great video to provide context around why we stand the way we do. Your fighting stance distance and knee position looks athletic and mobile. However, your partner was narrow and appears to lack knee bend each time. She’ll likely have to adjust before many techniques, making her execution comparatively slow.

That parry and over hand right would be lethal even if you did block it , should never try block with your hand better moving your head
