    Great video!
    We used your method to air-layer 2 branches of our lychee tree last July. We cut the branches in March, and they are both doing great. Thank you!

    it takes about 3 months to know for sure. sometimes the leaves die sometimes not., The best time to do it is before they flower and fruit. After fruiting can work but it takes much longer.

    Best video for air layer. Well explained, thanks for sharing.

    hi, USually the trees are planted 20 x 20 feet or more but you can go closer with tight pruning. They need to be open to let light and air circulate. Lychee are pruned like donuts! If you were looking down on it the inside is a big hole and the outside round.. They need the sun to fruit so make sure there is enough light. good luck!

    never did it with mac nuts as they are usually grafted which is also more difficult than most trees. Iodine needs to be used ot test the wood if receptive. Ive not grafted them in 30 years but used to have to do it. just dont remember the details

    I air-layered my Brewster lychee in April, and it developed good rooting by a couple or few weeks ago, (I cut it off yesterday and potted it up) without opaque covering, just a clear plastic bag (though I wrapped the air layer portion with a black plastic bag for the past 2 to 3 weeks with the idea of probably encouraging more root development with the opaque covering) to hold the wet sphaghnum moss, and tied with 1'' green nursery tape and yellow caution tape about half covering in total of the clear plastic bag, but roots also formed along the clear open portion of the plastic, with sun exposure, - just materials on hand, makeshift, though sphaghnum was a special purchase for air layering. I'm in San Diego

      just cut about 60 airlayers last Thursday and potted them up in small pots in a shade hours with daily watering. after cutting its another 4 or5 or more depending on size. Also I cut off 2/3 of the green before repotting. This is with the spagnum that was left and then in a regular soil mix
      good luck

      @@HawaiiFruit Good to know. I put it in a 5gal container, with potting soil. Looks balanced, not excessive, no cutting of the leafy branching,… looks in scale as it was to be begin with, the root quantity seems sufficient to maintain the foliage,… and time will tell. It's in shade with some dappled sun,… and I'm two blocks from the ocean. So daily watering, ok, I was thinking maybe every other day. I'll see.

    I have question about air or ground layering crafted mango trees that are about 6 meters large when crafted.
    The same mangos non crafted as you know are much more larger.
    I am asking if you air or ground layer branch of crafted mango, the result tree will be same size cca 6 m tree, or the much more larger mango like those non crafted?
    Thank you very much

    • @HawaiiFruit
      @HawaiiFruit  10 років тому

      When you graft a tree like Mango it will be more small than seedling tree but not always. It depends on variety, Air layer has small root system but it will also become larger but takes more time. You still have to be more aggressive with pruning to keep it shorter. good luck

      I live last 20 years in Dominican Republic they have many mangos, about last 10 years they planted and harvested giant mangos fruits, from grafted Mangos that can be purchased in nurseries.
      These are about 6 metes in tall and wide when adult. I got one it give fruits about 20 cm large.
      I attemted to graft them to other mangos grown from seeds, while waiting to produce first fruits and also after it producing fruits. All the scions dried, no matter what I did.
      the problem here is, no body knows;
      corect name of these mangos
      How big is the tree if not grafted, if no one planted them here this way
      (I guess the first were imported from abroad)
      You dont have idea how large the ungrafted tree will be?
      If the layered new tree have smaller root system, then the tree will be most likely also smaller then those ubgrafted?
      Thank you

      Hello Ken, I used a mix of sphagnum moss and coco peat in my first attempt to air layer my lychee tree. I harvested my first branch yesterday and it's placed away from direct sun. It took 6 months for ample roots to develop. I have 4 more younger air layered branches in the tree. I noticed my tree started to flower at the 3rd week of this month (April) after I fertilized the tree with KPhos + little MgSO4 ---> 2 months ago. I hope the flowers don't drop off and become fruits this time. Good to know that I can air later during its growth period. I though it's better during the dormant period. Thanks for your video Ken.

    you wouldn't water it, just the tree as a whole. Once you cut it, it then like any other plant. you dont want to over water it or let it get too dry. The roots are very tender

    Hello from Louisiana! I am about to try to start some lychee from seeds. I am wondering how many lychee tree I can get in an area of about 1/10 of an acre? (I am dedicating an acre of our land to the orchard area). We are growing oranges very well here and figure we should try lychee as they grow well in Florida. My children and I are steadily trying to introduce lychee to Louisianans :) They take them to school in their lunches and hand them out with mostly positive reactions...yay!

    hello again. just removed three air layer branches (@5-6 ft) from tree. nice dense root growth developed. each branch has about 2-3 dozen young fruit about the size of large almonds. i have removed all fruit before but was thinking of leaving a few on each branch as i continue the next 2-3 phases till it is planted in ground. am i taking a chance on stressing the branch since the roots are still young? thanks.

    • @HawaiiFruit
      @HawaiiFruit  7 років тому

      you didnt say what type of fruit but it is usually better to remove them the first year. Once removed it should be in a large pot for 6 months if the airlayer is 6ft tall. remember airlayers dont have tap toots so they need to be stable so the new growth doesnt get injured or break off

    What would you say the maximum diameter a branch can be for a successful air layer? This would be for a lychee tree

    • @HawaiiFruit

      I've seen whole trees done -- just takes much longer. Greenwell ethnobotanical garden routinely did 6 even 8 inch diameter limbs

    nicely done,very informative.i have the go ahead to air layer a friends 15 year old lychee tree(my second attempt,failed first try with my own apple tree.no roots after a month.?) gonna try on a lower branch @5-6 ft long @1 1/2 " diameter with many off shoot branches that will be removed after it has rooted and cut off the main tree.my question is how big is too big of a branch that can be air layered? there is a (branch?)@10-12 ft tall and @3-4 inches in diameter i would like to air layer.this piece is 15% of the total tree but growing into neighbors property(who would like it removed).would this be be big to air layer.if ok,it would be an almost instant full size tree.

    • @HawaiiFruit
      @HawaiiFruit  10 років тому

      Size doesnt matter with the air layers but it needs to be done in the spring when the tree is flushing and not in its dormant period after harvest. As long as its cut and scraped all the way around it should be ok -- usually 3 to 5 months to be safe and as hte roots are tender, you want to leave a section below the airlayer so that it can rest in the bottom of a pot and doesnt wiggle around for another 3 to 5 months. good luck
