This is a window into the 70s . Can’t tell you how many backyard parties with bands we went to. The bands were a sliding scale from ouch to rocking but the parties were great ☮️
Ah yes, garage bands, and backyard bands! Great great times that I surely do miss. Summertime childhood, get up, get dressed, grab your friends, and follow the sounds of the music. Loved it.
They took all the money they got paid to create a music video and bought a big bag of weed and then recorded themselves jamming out in the backyard for this iconic music video! 👏👏👏♥️🤣
I never thought much about it, but... You fellas ain't wrong. Whoever filmed and edited that backyard hillbilly vid (back in 1978 or whatever?) did a helluva job. The angles he caught and the way it syncs up with the album track? Impeccable work. Even if Ram Jam's career didn't quite pan out? Well, this song and video will, righteously, live on forever.
OMG !! I am laughing my ass off! I have heard and watched this video several times throughout the years, and you guys pointed out the girl on the motorcycle in the back !??? LOL ! I NEVER noticed that before ! (I am a woman} Too funny !! I was focused on the guitar playing and the drums. You guys brought up the girls in the background. I had to watch again, LOL!!!! too Funny !!
Here in the Great North Country of Minnesota, I grew up in a small rural community. The place to hang out was a place to come for coffee and lunch, open 7 days a week until 11pm. In it was a jukebox where savvy kids knew how to turn up the volume when "Black Betty" was on. I vaguely remember some of the older crowd languishing over a cup of coffee, and muttering angrily when this song come on, full volume of course. The best thing was a local owner that provided these jukeboxes to the surrounding area, didn't change out his records very often and the boom boom of that bass-heavy song was heard for a long time.
this is one of those tunes to sing no matter the lyrics meaning - most people have never seen their video - but to this day when it is played anywhere people groove - and that is good 2023...
Allegedly a GRANDMAS backyard on Long Island NY. I lived there. That's how we rolled back in the day. Backyard parties. This song was a BANGER🔥🔥🔥 when it first came out. Everyone jamming it. Read up on the History of " Black Betty" as a nickname for muskets. Yes...guns. Misfired a lot. So this band resurrected an old song, then turned it into lyrics about a woman from Birmingham Alabama. Why not❗Fun jam🎵Every REACTOR on UA-cam has just loved this song.
"Black Betty" and "Brown Bess" were painted and unpainted varsions of the standard British Long Land Pattern .75 caliber musket. Both went bam-ba-lam. Both were named for Queen Elizabeth.
Agree! What they have done with this channel nearly from day one is combine enthusiasm with their own experience and skills, and present their reaction thoughts succinctly and very well. They feed off each other extremely well, as only brothers who are close can do convincingly.
Of interest to me as I never knew this, the lead guitarist was from the 1967 one hit wonder Band, The Lemon Pipers. Also this song was produced by Kasenetz and Katz, the Founders of Buddah Records and the Bubble Gum Sound of the early 70s. Also another fact I didn't know was the Band was from New York City, I would bet the mortgage they were southern boys, LOL!
A acappella work song from the 1930's sung by southern chain gangs is off putting when sung by young white southern rock musicians (2004) but I know a killer riff when I hear one
This was done BEFORE COMPUTERS! Back when you had to slice & splice the actual film with a razor blade!! Love the casual hangout feel of the folks in the background. The gals on the motorcycle and the barbecue going. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
How much fun can you have in less than three minutes with 1970's rock and roll, and a one hit wonder band? The answer: TOO MUCH!!! Ram Jam on the Ram-Page.
It almost doesn't seem like the same song without the whole middle later section, but it rocks anyway. Good catch on the video editing; I've done some of that too and I've always thought this was really well done. And just think about how much more difficult it would have been back then in the analog world before Digital Audio & Video Workstations.
45y old. Today producers spend literally hundreds of thousands on sets and animations and locations to make music videos. These guys said we need to make a video, everybody turn out your pockets and check the couch cushions. Alright, let's do this!

Several people are mentioning the short version and the long version. There are multiple versions of the same recording. There is a 4+ minute version that was played on the radio which was the first one that Airplay Beats reacted to. There is a shorter AM radio version of about 2 and a half minutes. Both of these use the same video, this reaction being the shorter radio edit. Then there is a long version of 7+ minutes that was played on the underground FM stations of the day. Here is the link to the long version. ua-cam.com/video/-T2tnf23lyc/v-deo.html
I heard it they got money from the record company to make a video and they threw a party and videoed that. LOL Hope its true. The video reminds me of my old days. I might even have played that party! Yeah!
The Ram Jam versions are all chopped up versions of the original recording by the singer, Bill Bartlett, in a band called Starstruck. Ram Jam never recorded it, they formed because of the song and this video was made to promote it. Here’s the Starstruck version, it's a little mind bending hearing new parts that were cut for the re-released version. ua-cam.com/video/I73T5EJmaS4/v-deo.htmlsi=ez9N_i2xpTVk6Nvt

This was before MTV, before Friday night videos, before VIDEOs were called videos. Ram Jam formed in 1977, and by 1978, they had split.
It was a film. Video tape hadn't become available yet.
