Oh my goodness, I never knew I could learn so many new things by watching UA-cam. I just subscribed to your Channel and I appreciate you demonstrating the difference between latex and chalk paints. I’m planning on painting the wooden cabinet underneath my bathroom sink and I didn’t know which type of paint to use, but now I do! ♥️👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Page can't be found have you any websites.
Well done. Answered my questions about the two paints.
thanks for posting, this is informative.
Useful comparison, thanks!
Cool chair, love the color combo! I’m so glad I found your video, we have a 1927 Buick w mohair interior that’s original and very bleached out. The mohair used to be a dark navy blue and while I plan on replacing the interior at some point, for now I’d like to spray dye the mohair just as you did here in the chair! Watching your video has given me the confidence to give it a go this fall!
Kudos to you for your trial and error approach.. many companies pitching product sponsorships are slowly replacing community information sharing forums.😥
I appreciate the side by side. Usually these versus videos omit vital information. Thanks!
Thank you very much! I try to cover all potential questions without rambling un-necessary information and long introductions. Thank you for noticing!
I’ve only been doing this about a year. 3 pieces so far. 2 dressers and a small drop leaf table. I’ve always used regular paint, just paint samples from Lowe’s. I recently tried chalk paint on a piece for my grandma & I just don’t like the feel of it when I’m putting it on. Maybe when this current piece is finished, I’ll like it more, but for now, I’m all for the struggle with regular paint. It’s what I’m used to
By using foam rollers you can obtain the professional finish whatever paint you use.
I think a sprayer because every time I use a roller it gets bumpy . I don’t know why.
@@darleneruiz6967 there are rollers and rollers and like paint brushes, they are not all made equally.
After years of using 10cm (4") sponge rollers, I have found Wickes to be the best.
@@PetiteBluebirdgirl I can't agree more. I never understand why people use a brush unless they want that 'unprofessional' look. I've hand painted 100's of kitchens and they look like they are sprayed when dry.
Am I crazy lol I think the left side actually looks better....
It's a personal preference. No crazy. :)
💯 agree
Latex paint always looks better than chalk paint. I will never understand why chalk paint is so popular.
@@Jessa8891 Because it's advertised as not needing to be sanded.
I feel like the chalk paint goes for a more vintage type look and the latex is more modern. I prefer the modern look myself 😊
Long before I ever heard of chalk paint & didn't no what I was doing, I painted a chest of draws with white emulsion (latex paint) distressed it to shabby chic. I never even varnished it yet it lasted years.
The main reason I use chalk paint is that you can paint over waxed and/or shiny surfaces. You don't have to strip or sand the furniture first. Other than that, i think regular paint works fine.
Scot Fennell I would never paint over wax. You can easily prep the surface prior to painting by using paint thinner (or water if the wax is water based), remove the wax, lightly sand or degloss, and then you are good to go with some paint.
Scot Fenn ahh so thats it 🙌
What happens if you just paint over the wax please?
finnett if you use chalkpaint, nothing will happen, if you use other kind, the wax will prevent the paint to stick

I tried French chic alfresco chalk paint on my composite plastic internal front porch door. It was dark red and I painted it in Wise old sage. It was scarey for the first 2 coats I thought I would have to buy a new door or just leave home before my husband got back from work!!! If it got a bit dry and draggy I just gently dipped the tip of my brush into a bit of water i had on hand in a pot, this technique was better as i could have more control over the paint and water ratio and it worked like a dream. It turned out fabulous and the colour is beautiful. I let it cure as suggested but it can easily be scratched off when I use keys and turn the handle if I catch it with my nails. Quick instant results though is what I wanted and I got it. I also did my wooden gate with exactly the same tub of paint it only took a short time and its great no problems.
I then bought an expensive wall paint, same brand, what an absolute nightmare never again. Even watered down it was really hard to use with a roller or brush. Finish wasnt great. But that's just me. I do like chalk paint for instant results though and I can change up furniture colours within hours. I'll stick with regular emulsion for now for my walls.
I refinish furniture and I specialize in southern rustic pieces. I only use regular flat paint. As you can see, it gives a better distressed look with half the effort and time, and you can put a clear coat in matte finish over it (spay can) and it it hold better then chalk paint. I hate chalk paint, more expensive, more time consuming, and the wax to seal it costs more and takes more time. I personally thought the regular paint side looked better. The top didn't look no where near as patchy as the chalk side and weathered looked on the bottom half was beautiful compared to the chalk side.
😕
I really appreciate your commentary here. I suspected chalk paint to be another gimmick. I’ll stick with flat. Thank you kindly for your confirmation 😃
I liked the regular latex paint side better, too, but I guess it depends on what look you are going for? The chalk side looks a tad bit lighter, as in more light, but that's probably just my imagination. Both look beautiful, though!
Merfolk ExitTheMatrix I had a similar thought. Chalk paint will go like shag carpeting.
Thanks for your comment. please, what have u been using for the top coats? I just painted a dresser with Reg paint n I don't want to lose it bcz of how fragile it is. After it finished drying, the next day, I accidentally touched it after I washed my hands and the paint was coming off.. I also noticed a few scratches causing the paint to peel off😰
You can wet distress the chalk paint, just use a wet scratcher and allow to dry.
Thanks good example .
You're not crazy, the left side does look better!
Can you use emulsion over top of chalk paint on wooden dinning table and chairs please
Thanks for sharing your personal experience. However, Chalk paint is only more durable IF it's sealed w/wax which is labor intensive & expensive. Annie Sloan's UA-cam channel she explains all about her Chalk paints, how they work, the waxing process etc.
Yes you are 100% correct.
The thing that chalk paint is touted for is coverage. You could’ve taken a dark finish and showed coats of what it looked like to cover it.
I had a nightmare trying to just get the color even painting an old steamer trunk with Anne Sloan paint. Finally just got latex chaulk paint and it looks fine.
Let me ask you something doll, why did you sand after you paint? Isn't fresh paint covering all surfaces the desired look?
Nice 🙂
.. for me I'm more concerned about durability especially the top part.. I use melamine paint.. adding talc .. do you have it you're welcome. ❤️❤️
I used matte rustoleum paint and it looks pretty good but should I to finish it off with clear matte polyurethane?
That's pretty good to know the chalk is more durable
Chalked paint is basically self priming right? Where i live it's hard to find chalked paint and it's very expensive. I'm planing to paint an ikea drawer which has laminate on top can i just use Benjamin Moore's Ben line without sanding since it's self priming too?
Good tutorial. I stopped using chalk and milk paint years ago. Too unreliable. Latex is cheaper even the best. A tester pot of Farrow and Ball will do a piece of furniture and you can still wax and dust it.

@@tariadriana6541 latex paint peels off. Chalk paint is durable. You can seal it with polycyclic
I always used regular paint and never had any problems with it... the behr paint is thick and the coverage is good too. I think it can compete well with chalk paint
When I see distressed furniture, I always think... why don't they paint that???? Has anyone tried mixing Flo in the chalk paint to help eliminate brush strokes? I'm going to do that this weekend on a few bathroom cabinets.
I also have some Flo trol and will try it. I think some people like the brush strokes and aged look.that colored waxes or whitewash bring out in the brush marks and some people like you want the smooth look. Flo Trol should do it.
If I can ask what's Flo I'm new to chalk paint
I dont get it. If you want to eliminate the brush strokes and then seal the chalk paint effectively removing the chalky finish, you've defeated the purpose of chalk paint. Just use regular paint and achieve the same thing with half the work.
@@oreobenavidez5870 flo trol is an additive that makes paint smoother I'm a fluid artist and use it to get cells on my paintings
I learned that you don’t paint up and down for chalk paint. You use a round headed brush to apply it. Also I learned that you should apply clear wax before you sand.
Your are absolutely correct. Annie Sloan says don't paint up and down for chalk paint, but I know a few furniture painters that like to do it the old fashioned way. I tend to paint with the grain. However, if I was going to do a colored wax, I would do it the Annie Sloan way. If I am distressing, I can't really tell the difference between the two methods. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I think the latex side looks better at least the top does! I have been wondering what the new deal is with chalk paint. I never heard of it until recently. I do want a durable finish so might go with chalk but what if I didnt sand and used a primer then painted either latex or chalk and protected with something. I cant remember what I saw a lady use but I think it was polyurethane. I want a metallic deep gold finish. Any recommendations anyone as to which brand has the best deep gold metalic. My couch is very deep gold and want to paint my sideboard and glam it out with crushed glass and mirror and probaly buy a new table used and paint it as well. If I cant find a mirror one it will probably be glass. have one in mid that is only 75.00 bucks and the tufted chairs I saw at home depot in a deep teal that matched my tufted couch but would have to paint the wood on the table base and chairs but the legs match perfectly on the table and chairs. i wish my table had a recessed area to add mirror like my side board but it would just stick up over the table top unless I can find a way to add some trim that would look ok. I am new to all this so be kind...lol Its to bad none of the furniture stores have gold in a chrome like finish I would really want these other chairs that are rimmed in a chrome type shinny finish but it is gold. I thought of buying a gold mirrored type self adhesive and wrapping the base in it but seems would probably show.
Am I the only one who sees a smiley face in the sander? 😀
I've learned to make my own chalk paint using baby powder you're welcome.. don't use any just baby powder make sure there is talc in it
I love chalk paint you do not have to prep as much...you can also dilute it with water and choose your own consistency. If you use a foam or sponge roller or just a sponge chalk paint comes out nice and smooth especially if you thin it out some first. #feelthroughyoureyes @feelthroughyoureyes
Can we use wax over regular latex paint?
Several yrs ago, I painted two pieces of furniture in my bedroom, prepping well, using Valspar water base paint. Had asked someone in the paint dept of Lowes first which paint would give a durable finish. When all finished and completely dry.. quickly each time I opened and closed a drawer there was chipping at edges. Went back and asked the same guy if I should have used some type of top coat. He nixed that thought. Well, I lived with the flaws, however sometime in the near furniture there should be several pieces including kitchen cabinets to paint. I'd rather not have to wax as read once should with a chalk paint. It's important in the upcoming small house renovation to have a good look and durable. ???
Hi Diane- Did you sand the furniture down before painting and/or use a primer? Water base paint won't work if you don't prep the furniture first. Factory finisihes are always oil base and latex won't work until you scuff the shine off, prime then paint or sand most of the finish off and and paint. I scuff sand everything even with chalk paint. I am an old school painter and chalk paint does hold up well, but I have seen things painted with too much shine underneath the chalk paint and it won't hold up, it will scratch off or peel off. If you use chalk paint, scuff the surface up first so the shine is gone and paint with chalk paint. I personally don't use wax much anymore and would not use it on kitchen cabinets because of the use and oils from a kitchen. I would seal them with polyurethane or polycrylic. Also with kitchen cabinets, there are probably layers of grease you can't even see on them. I would never paint them without scuff sanding which will remove the grease and then clean them with a degreaser which will remove paint dust and any remaining grease for a good surface to paint. Here is a video on different ways to seal chalk paint that explains a little how each one works. ua-cam.com/video/DnMTAh2c0e0/v-deo.html
Is chalk paint waterproof ?
Why do we need to sandpaper the surface after painting?
It is not necessary but a lot of people "distress" their chalk paint.
Music is repetitive but interesting comparison.
they look the same except the fact stated the texture. people dont want to see brush marks in their high money woodwork. also the latex would be better also if wanted to do a new paint then sand it to make it look used also. easier to sand by hand ect. but truthfully this paint trend is in which i think is lame because you hide the natural wood underneath and with stains you can have a lot better looking piece of furniture then a painted one. unless you are going for a antique old look then the paint would be the better option. but a nice stained piece of furniture will outclass the painted furniture almost always. to me paint is the cheap way to make old cabinets or furniture look better with a lot less work then stripping the old finish and doing it right and bringing out the real wood again.
jdogg661420 I can agree that a natural stained piece of wood furniture can last for decades.. but.. sometimes, the style is terrible, or there's just too much wood going on making the house feel dark.. For those reasons, a coat of colorful paint can save the piece from the donation bin, or add a pop of color in your room . I have a dresser and chest from my grandmother.. 1940's. Small chest n dresser.. not really practical nowdays, but I can't part with them.. so debating whether to paint, or try a blue or green stain.. something to make them eye catching and more of a decoration than a truely functional piece.. but I know what you mean.. nothing ruins a beautiful old piece of furniture more than a sloppy, tacky paint job..
About 20 years ago I bought a century old house that had layers of paint covering the old woodwork. I stripped all the window trim and base, refinished, and it took many hours! My Dad told me the next person will probably paint it, and sure enough the neighbor told me most of it was painted within 2 years after I sold it!
Not everyone enjoy all brown wood furniture. Paint beautifies wood as well. I am a furniture crafter and I use both. Nothing wrong with either.
Using either paints. Do you seal both of these at the end? Thanks!
it depends on what the furniture is used for. with chalk paint if its just a shelf or something that never gets touched or used you don't HAVE to. most people will seal it with a wax or polyacrylic top coat though to give it more protection.
with regular latex paint it depends on how much acrylic is built into the paint. if its a flat paint apply above statement to the project. if it is a satin or semi gloss you shouldn't have to seal it.
when you think about it chalk paint is nice because it does a good job of sticking to furniture without much prep. but then you have to seal it so its a two step process. With regular latex you would need to do the same minimal sanding prep and then primer the work piece. then paint over the primer so its still a two step process. IMHO chalk paint is a gimmick and is way too expensive. I can't think of any reason to use chalk paint over regular latex.
Regular paint isn't meant to be distressed really and doesn't require varnish (just the hard wearing areas like the top in this instance) I'd say if you want the distressed look then it's chalk paint.
I painted something with Rustoleum chalked paint. I want to paint accents over it. Can I use latex or oil based paints over top?
Yes you can. I would recommend using latex since chalk paint is latex paint. If you use oil, it will work fine but you will see a definite difference in the sheen after you wax it. Your oil parts will be more shiny and not blend as well with the other paints so it kind of looks like an add on instead of part of the original design.
I also use non-chalk paints for accents in flat or satin finish. The chalk paint acts as a primer so you can paint any paint over it. In addition, I go to Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Joann and buy the little craft bottles of paint for a dollar or two and have lots of colors, cheap that way. You can make these little bottles into chalk paint by adding a little plaster of paris or calcium carbonate, and I have done it both ways but don't see a difference.
Here is a video I did about this subject. . ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=VEczxEklGnw
Chalk has it uses but I see a lot of furniture painted with it and to me chalk paint looks flat and dull.
You are correct and that is the look people are after. They like it to look aged. It is definitely a personal preference thing. It is also used in different ways, like I put it on black furniture and seal it with danish oil and it looks like velvet.
In makeup it's called a matte finish.
@@sunrae7680 Yeah it's called that in the paint world too and it existed long before chalk paint.
Chalk paint has calcium carbonate(chalky). That's the texture!!!
All paints have calcium carbonate. It is the cheapest filler
I used a foam roller for chalk paint and the air bubble effect is obvious across entire table top! Any ideas of how to rectify with 1 coat of paint left???
I would sand it with 150-220 grit sandpaper. You will have a good color base even with sanding that should cover it. I would also brush the second coat on to avoid more bubbles.
Use higher density foam roller rather than regular foam or use 4 to 5 mm nap roller. Higher nap makes it orange skin effect.
Does chalk paint mean you can write on it with chalk like a chalk board? What's chalk paint anyway? Hmm
THEREALBARBIE89 No you're thinking of chalkboard paint. Chalk paint is a paint with a chalky finish. It's got an ultra matte finish. It's good for distressing. If you're into that farmhouse/shabby chic look. It's great too, because you don't have to prep your project before painting.
You can make your own chalk paint using flat latex paint and adding chalk powder plus water. Search Amazon for "LD Carlson Calcium Carbonate, 1 pound Capacity." It's less than $6. Read the comments for it to find different recipes and what people think of it.

What color is chalk paint did you use ?
Ah, I am sorry I use so many brands of paints I do not know the answer to this. :(
Mz Alter, the color is blue
Do you use wax on the latex paint when distressing?
You can apply a sealer like a water based poly.
Where do you buy Chalk Paint
Home depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby. All art & craft stores
Chalk paint wins? That depends on the look your going for.
Can I use satin paint to make chalk paint ?
Yes!
Chalk paint works better for Crafts and DIYs. I do crafts and sell them so that's how I know. I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass or anything. Just letting you know.
Crafters use chalk paint a lot to paint the outside of glass so that your main color of desired paint will adhere to the glass. Its used for numerous things to do with crafts.
How does it "look more durable" ? Durability comes with time...also, chalk paint is thicker. Thicker doesn't mean durable...🌸
Does chalk paint work on concrete stutes
It has worked on everything I ever tried it on, but I've never done concrete. If it were indoors, I would definitely try it myself. Outdoors I would make chalk paint with flat exterior paint. I've never done it but I would think it would work.
If chalk paint is too thick water it down smoother finish

I would rather use Chalk paint and use a Polyurethane for a top coat.
So the polyurethane will leave a nice shiny coat atop the chalk paint? I'm thinking about redoing an old wood dresser.

There is not a smell to chalk paint after it dries and it smells like regular latex paint. Chalk paint instructions say there is no need to sand but I always scuff sand and clean with degreaser anyway, especially Ikea type stuff.
I think the odor is when you use Milk paint
@@NashvilleRestoration what do you use to scuff sand and what brand of degreaser do you use? Thanks!
@@TheDingfish I use 120 -180 grit sandpaper. I don't necessarily want a smooth as silk surface for the chalk paint look so use 120. If you want a super smooth surface, the 180-220 grit is best. I use the cheap degreasers and love them. "Awesome" from Dollar tree is concentrated and you add water. It is $1 and works great. "Awesome Orange" for Dollar Tree is also concentrated and cheap. The best known and most expensive is Purple Power, and it is some kind of powerful so if you use it, first it will remove everything you put it on and second, it also is concentrated so start lightly on the product when you mix it in. A little goes a long way. I prefer the cheaper degreasers I mentioned first because they work fine, are cheap and Purple Power is stronger than necessary but it will do the job every time.
Chalk paint is not more durable over time it chips and usually you have to wax it again and but to each is own..
Wait a minute! There are many cheap quality latex paint. Be a little picky here. I always use Valspar Reserve. Never dissapoints
