I was in Sydney and got to catch up with my bro Justice Brooks. He's an incredible cinematographer and editor who introduced me to his special Sony picture profile originally created by Cinematographer Bradley J. Conomy.

From my personal experience with Sony a6600 in 2021:
1. For best in-camera shooting: I prefer Cine 1 instead Cine 2 because it has slightly higher dynamic range in the highlights.
2. For editing: I use the new HLG 3 gamma because it has great dynamic range and is good both for grading and for using directly (just by adding some contrast).
This video was however very useful in 2018 (and today as well).
Agree
Hands 🙌🏾 down the best picture profile that I’ve ran into!
Just FYI for Sony a7iii users / The Picture profile is found in first Tab 'camera icon' 1 / screen 12 /14 / last shown option 'Picture Profile ' / thxs for the insight Olumfemii, keep it up!
I just tried this for a short film shoot. Overall, it was GREAT, and that "detail" setting appears to help overcome the issue of so much sharpness, with Sony cams, that they look fake or 90s broadcast-like. My only complaint is that, with this color space, the mid-day sky, in a cloudy area (Pacific Northwest), appeared so blue that I'm not sure I'll be able to adapt those particular scenes in post. We'll see. Crossing my fingers! - Thanks, overall, for some great settings.
You can use hue vs sat to bring down the sat and hue vs hue to change the color
Holy shit I just developed this exact profile on my A7s with the same lens. Cine 2 the goat
Someone still finds a reason to dislike stuff. It's not even about preference, some people just don't appreciate a good free lesson. No really if you disliked this, you either have thousands of dollars to go learn this in film school or you really REALLY just suck at being human. Great video btw.
I am so gonna try it out!! Thanks. I like Cine4 a lot, but I always open to experiment.
Marcos Rocha dope man. I’ve been use it on my camera for the last couple of weeks and have been loving it
Cine 4 is meant for lower light.
Cine4 ftw
@@Olufemii What's the IRE for zebras for this picture profile?
Very timely video for me as I have been struggling with my A7iii to get the colors right. I will try this and let you know how it goes! Thanks for sharing!
any update?
I have had the most success this week shooting PP1 as it's set. I will continue to explore!
Please kindly update us on the colors. I’m getting a7iii and the Color issue is the only thing holding me back.
Any updates? I have the A7iii
Black Level 0
Gamma Cine2
Color Mode Cinema
Detail -7
done
Cine 2 is interesting, I was always favouring Cine 4. I'll check out the differences though in most cases the action/story content in front of a camera is what counts, though colors play a role in telling that story.
I think is the best for all cine 4 if you have time cine 2 or hlg 2
Slog 3 does not have banding if you expose correctly. One stop over is the sweet spot.
Cine 2 is good for banding.
Loving the purity ring in the background.
I just did some test shots with this around the house and they were great. A very minimal grade provided extraordinary colors. The grade is super light and doesn't weigh down the 8-bit video. I'll be doing a lot more tests this week. White balance is super important. No AWB.
Du you know if any of the other options have to be modified? Is it only the 3 settings?
@@justdominik2660 I only changed the settings listed in the video. I did my first shoot yesterday with it and the footage was nice and easy to grade. It was easy to get vibrant colors.
@@downhometv3237 That sounds fantastic!
So you just changed the settings on PP5 like shown in the video. I am a little bit confused because he mentions that it's not important which profile you change. But it is. The preseted Picture Profiles have some other settings modified like knee and color depth.
@@justdominik2660 Go to PP5 add change the settings. That's what he did and I did.
Hillsong Y&F so surprised when i saw this
Facts
Can we get the full details on the profile settings? Because i have messed around with them myself and i’m not sure whether i have touched the ones on pp5, so i might change the settings as you guys have explained, but the other ones might be off and i would like to not reset all my camera settings. Cheers
Wow the audio is so.. crisp!!
Nobody’s talking about how this greatly decreases the dynamic range of the camera...
The decrease of dynamic range in post is intended as most of us export in Rec709 which only allows a limited dynamic range.
I was lost at the third "stuff like that..."
Australia represent (I'm a Melbourne based filmmaker) Great tips, thanks.
Nobody is pointing out that the sitdown interview scene has major green tint to it. Walls, tables, jacket are all looking greenish. Yet the video is all about getting rid of it. 🙌
What’s the difference between cine2 and cine4? 🤔🤔
you just saved me months of gradeStudySHit.. thanks man
One thing that still confuses me is what is the difference between black level and black gamma? They seem so similar.
I would like to see a video with the specs to Focus Mode, Metering Mode, Focus Area, Aperture, Shutter Speed... All these things people doesn't say on actual videos. I think it could be cool.
ua-cam.com/video/x9cfEYiPoPc/v-deo.html it isnt the greatest in audio but I did make a video on shutter speed ,aperture, and iso
@@tyler-chung That was not exactly what i was saying, but is a great content. Like!
@ ahh sorry! What were you looking for more specifically. I would love to cover it in the future since clearly it is a topic of interest
@@tyler-chung Don't worry. You've created a great content. I'd like to learn more about "Metering Mode", "Focus Area", "Focus Mode" with examples, as you did in your video, speaking deep about that funcions. I want to know what exactly the functions do, you know? I set it different some times, but i never know how to set for each situation. Have a nice week.
Just a Disclaimer: y’all probably know that the color science for Sony varies between cameras. The newer cameras after the A7RIII have improved as with more color depth for a few models. Matching colors with A7III vs A7RIII just doesn’t compare (regardless that the RIII is a stills camera it has Sony Venice color science)
HLG is my fave, very minimal noise!
HLG has less noise because of the missing information. It is made for the resulting video and even then only for at least 10 bit. Setting the camera to HLG because of the colors is a way to say you have no clue what you are doing :-)
ok so.. use this setting because... it's the best... and then use this... there's also this and that, but you kinda wanna go with that here.... great tutorial :D :D :D
5:28 I also try to avoid shooting people in a documentary style situation 😂
Anzhonny Castillo who doesn’t😅
Just an amateur question here: you say that the closest to get rec709 is cinema in cine2 color mode... Wouldn’t rec709 in HLG color profile be closer to look like rec709? 🤷♂️ just doesn’t make sense to me, please explain
iDonKenneth ok thanks for the info and the reply👍🏻
Man always dropping jewels been watching for a while! Your intro on this vid is hella dope, been tryna figure out what and how you achieved this frame at 00:37 been trying to figure out how to do something similar for a minute but no idea what to even call it to find a tutorial lmao
been trying to been trying
Amen, I'm planning to try this soon. Thanks Josh and Justice. GOD Bless you brothers!
Great video! Shooting in this profile tomorrow💪🏽
Awesome the color of the Sony, but, ¿what is the best profile for cameras Canon DSLR and the best process for improve this colors with grading? May be a good idea for a next tutorial. Respects.
This needs 3 thumbs up!
I'd like to see a video on white balance on your camera
Rec709, Arri, Canon look...this is what happens when you get all your insight from Hillsongs bro!
that's all you do for your grade? jeez... also, fun fact, the reason NOT to EVER put your lut in the basic tab is because it applies the lut before it hits the tone controls. so if you over exposed when you shot, and you drop the lut on it, and the hilights blow out, you can't get them back by lowering the exposure because the lut already pushed them to 100%. if you put the lut in creative, you can still adjust the exposure and retain the information. honestly, why they even include it in the basic correction section is beyond me
It's there so that you can use correction luts for specific gammas and camera profiles and then allowing you to still apply a creative lut. An example would be to use a correction lut as a starting point for sonys hlg which has a green cast. In a sense that bring u to zero so you can grade from there
@Tom Lietar happy the info helped!!!
@@DannyTrombley I've been struggling color grading my Sony footage because it never comes out as it shows in my preview and after reading this I got hold of a correction out did what you said it and it fixed my problem. Who would've thought huh :)
@@swavyjay9933 amazing! So happy to hear it!
Thanks Guys , will give this a try
Awesomely dope. Thank you.
Thank you for this information video ! Quick question since he turned down the detail that means he need to sharpen in post right ? And if so when do you sharpen after color grading of before ?
Don't sharpen, cinematic projects are more smooth.
Jonasz Olszewski no he’s right but sometimes client asks for the quality as some of them don’t have much technical knowledge and they watch the videos on phone mostly..
thanks josh! i will try next time i have a sony in my hands
ELJAGUARTV.COM do it brotha!
How does one get noticed by/ or get hired by organizations like Hillsong/A21/Compassion?
Verry nice in raw also !
thanks man this is very helpful!
love it
😍
Thank You for this video
„cinema“ color mode has a magenta shift „pro“ is better
Great help, thx !! I have a question for picture profile, I want to buy
a Sony a7iii, can I choose the same picture profile settings as shown in this video ?
Yes, you can. the a7iii has the same menu system for Picture profiles so you are able to change each picture profile accordingly.
Matt Delovino thanks!
Helloooo and thanks for the great content. Does this profile works for low light conditions? Cheers
slow mazda yep i tweaked that one, so I was thinking maybe there could have another shade/version of it. Thanks
Wow fantastic vid! So gooooood
Great video! Thank you!
Who knew secrets could be so obvious? This picture profile is a default aside from the -7 detail setting. LOL!
VALUABLE!!!
Thank you, just purchased an a6500, not sure if the profiles are exactly the same but can try. I don’t want to use slog but want something that still give flexibility and work in most situations. I have too heard that cine 4 is good. But thanks for breaking it down in the menus. Do you need to reset the profile in any manner?
You can use any of the a6500 picture profiles but probably easier to use the lower range. We've set our customs settings to PP2.
I’d probably check out cody blues settings. He uses cine 4 on the a6500 which is not as flat as slog but gives an awesome all around result and it’s better in low light than this profile they are talking about here. But if you are looking for a killer low light profile then check out “make. art. now.” he has a spectacular video with the a7iii and it will probably work with the a6500 as well. Worth a try at least.
EOSHD is another option. Go to their website and you'll get clear instructions on how to dial in the PP settings on your A6500 for just a few bucks. We've used EOS HD settings for almost a year and find the color to be slightly easier to grade than standard PPs (you'll quite often find that your A6500 video output has a green tint no matter how you adjust PPs, white balance - its not always easy to remove in post while still maintaining natural skin tones and color)
World of Thai Food and suga foot - thank you, I will check out these settings and see what works best for my videos.
@@WorldofThaiFood How is it fairing in low light for you? I have the profile and love it, but I feel even in slightly dull light its noise city.
Merci beaucoup !
What camera did you record this interview. Really liking the creamy color.
Awesome video. So helpful!!!
at 0.18 what rig you are using for shoulder and is it good for handheld shots mostly ?
Does it have to be pp5? Or can it be used for other picture profiles? I’ve heard pp10 is very good if used well
Afaik it can be any profile
What's up dude! What monitor do you use to correct the color of your videos? Thanks!
I am a beginner I find it useful.
So would this picture profile not be ideal if you’re shooting in natural lighting?
I’ve watched this video dozens of times and find it hard to believe that’s just it.
Will it give me the same look for my 6500? Or is the color science different between the two cameras. I think I might be doing something wrong.
Mayowa Olugboji it should be pretty similar between the cameras. Make sure the values he didnt mention are at 0 like black level and the color stuff. Then he had a very nicely lit and exposed clip which probably would look great with no pic profile at all
Carl Bergsdorf thanks again, I appreciate you
So helpful, man. Great work.
Great video man thank you!
Man, so much teasing.
looks great! Any recommendations for the Sony FS5? Edit (Never mind it's the same) ;)
JWEggers yeah should be the same settings
Thanks love 💓
Hello
help me please.
I collected the clip in raw in Adobe and wanted to transfer to the after-effect.
But after the effect, the raw camera opens and he himself changed the color of the video!
What is the problem help please can not open the raw format in the after-effect
Has anyone tried shooting photos in cine profile Nd does it work ?
Hey Just noticed the sample clip shown is a .mov file, just curious about what FPS it was shot at?
Do you need to overexpose by 2 for cine2 ,as you would with slog2?
no you dont
If I get 1$ everytime he says "ummm" I would buy a Sony A7III
He is not a professional speaker or instructor that's excusable, he is providing you with some info, so don't be too critical.
That was also me, got enought single$ and finally got mines lol
watch a few more vids and you can buy a A7siii when it comes out
Huh. Didn't even notice.
stop being a dick
Awesome!
Will this work with the Rx100 vii?
I don't have the picture profile option on my Sony A7. Please help!
You won't have it unless you upgrade it to A7mk2
Hi, i have a sony a7 and this option is not in my camera? How it is posible?
Javi AEP the A7 mki does not have picture profiles
Good video!!
it is work on a6500 too?
the grading skills shown were nothing spectacular, using the curves first and then slide in an "S" where he said he doesn't like making the S shape in the curves panel????
did you say color grading , i've seen none here 😂 barely correction
@@thecineguy it's part of the grade when you correct to reach a certain color profile or standard
@@dallatorretdu "a part of the grade" isn't enough to be called grading, but it stays a personal taste.
DaVinci maaaaaaan....Please!
so good tutorial! thx ))

Why all my edited PP always resets after changing the Memory Recall?
memory recall resets them to the attributes they were saved. if you wanna keep the PP settings just use manual mode or something else.
can i get that setting on the a7 ?
Needed this!
Steven Van 🔥🔥🔥🙌🏾
what are your thoughts on knee value, does is it have an impact on highlight roll off?
Just go for HLG,
Why Cine 2 over Cine 4?
But what glass?
I keep on seeing footage like this in music videos produced by youtubers; its that overly photo filtered golden brown cast, not a fan of it. Usually mutilates color palettes and it makes your footage look like everyone elses.
Thanks a lot bru & just set the stereo to mono as the audio is panning and spinning our minds.
What if you did everything except instead of Cinema you do Sgamut3.cine?
is it possible to get 10 bit recording on an external monitor like Atomos?
Yes but it all depends if your camera can output that signal. I think the A7s is only 8-bit. Same with the a7s2. I imagine the a7s3 will have 10-bit internal recording when it comes out.
No, not with a7s2 or a6500 etc. They are 8 bit. You have to go FS5 or FS7 down the Sony route. If you want affordable 10bit then go for BMPCC 4k!
That dude is so chill lol it's a refreshing change of pace from the typical "WHATS UP UA-cam!! GO AHEAD AND SMASH THAT LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, FOLLOW ME ON INSTA, MAKE MY CHILD SUPPORT PAYMENTS FOR ME! IF THIS VIDEO GETS 3000 LIKES I'LL GHOST THE KID FOREVER!"
