My father was among the workers to help build these submarine during WW II (I was an infant, born 3 days after the launching of the first of these 28 submarines. My father, a marine electrician, worked on all but the first of these submarines. I will assume I was at some of these launchings, but of course I have no memory of them. My home at the time was about 10 blocks from the shipyards. Manitowoc Shipyards had 4 or 5 launch sites (unclear from aerial photographs I've seen. The is another ship yards in the town were my father later worked which built wooden boats during the war. Naval harbor tugs, minesweepers, sub chasers. The also built ocean going minesweepers during the Korean War. Later they build luxury yachts which continues to this day. Dad worked at that yards for 25 years until his retirement in the late 1970s.

@@guilherme.santos Of all the US WW II submarines, these were the only ones side launched, because of the width of the river. All other US WW II were launched stern first. I have found movies of some German WW II side launches but no location was given. As you probably know, Manitowoc is in the middle of North America, a long way from any ocean. The St. Lawrence Seaway was not yet built. Each of the 28 submarines had to be sailed to Chicago and through the Illinois River. At Lockport, IL they were put on floating drydocks and pushed by tugs down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. They had to go on these drydock because the controlling depth of the Mississippi River is only 9 ft (about 3 meters) [normal Mississippi River steamboat and barge traffic have very flat bottoms and little draft. ]

Wonderful sub launching diorama. Love the splashing wave effect. Great job making the wood launch too.

One more thing...deck guns were mounted last as the deck and pressure hull had tp be cut to install the batteries.

Having studied US SUBS. For 40 years i feel the need to tell you.
    1. Your bowplanes are on backward.
    2. The boats were not finish coat painted at the time of launch.
    3. Propeller guards were never used after 1942 except when the boat was in yard overhaul.
