دل ہی تو ہے نہ سنگ و خشت، درد سے بھر نہ آئے کیوں
हिंदी में मतलब/भावार्थ: दिल ही तो है! न संगो-ख़िश्त!
संगो-ख़िश्त = संग (=पत्थर) + व (=और) + ख़िश्त (=ईंट)
= पत्थर और ईंट (= ईंट-पत्थर)
दिल ही तो है! न संगो-ख़िश्त! दर्द से भर न आए क्यूँ?!
रोएँगे हम हज़ार बार… कोई हमें सताए क्यूँ?!
भावार्थ: (मेरा दिल आख़िर) दिल ही तो है! कोई पत्थर (संग) और ईंट (ख़िश्त से बनी वस्तु) नहीं; जो (प्रियतमा द्वारा तड़पाए जाने पर भी) पीड़ा से ना भर जाए। (अगर प्रियतमा हमें हज़ार बार सताएगी तो) हम हज़ार बार रोएंगे¡ (आखि़र) कोई (= प्रियतमा) हमें सताता क्यों है!

दैर नहीं; हरम नहीं; दर नहीं; आस्ताँ नहीं!
बैठे हैं रैह्गुज़र पे हम… ग़ैर हमें उठाए क्यूँ?!
भावार्थ: (जिस जगह मैं बैठा हूँ वो कोई) दैर (मंदिर) नहीं; हरम (मस्जिद) नहीं; (किसी के घर का) दर (द्वार) नहीं; (किसी सूफ़ी/संत का) आस्ताना (ड्योढ़ी या चौखट) भी नहीं! हम (तो बस) रैह्गुज़र (आम रास्ते) पे बैठे हैं! (फिर ये) ग़ैर [पराया व्यक्ति, जो असल में मेरा रक़ीब (प्रेम में मेरा प्रतिद्वंद्वी) है] हमें (आम रास्ते से) उठा क्यों रहा है।

क़ैदे-हयातो-बंदे-ग़म = क़ैदे-हयात + व (और) + बंदे-ग़म
क़ैदे-हयात = वो कारावास (क़ैद) जिसे हम जीवन (हयात) कहते हैं, जीवनरूपी कारावास
बंद = बंधन, फंदा, शिकंजा; Bond Fastening, Fetters, Chain
बंदे-ग़म = दुख का फंदा Bond Fastening, Fetters, Chain
क़ैदे-हयातो-बंदे-ग़म… अस्ल में दोनों एक हैं!
मौत से पहले आदमी ग़म से निजात पाए क्यूँ?!
भावार्थ: जीवन-नामक कारावास और दुखों का फंदा
(क़ैदे-हयातो-बंदे-ग़म) अस्ल में दोनों एक ही हैं!
मौत से पहले आदमी का दुखों (ग़म) से मुक्ति/छुटकारा (निजात) पाना असंभव है?!

हाँ वो नहीं ख़ुदा-परस्त! जाओ वो बेवफ़ा सही!
जिस को हो दीनो-दिल अज़ीज़... उस की गली में जाए क्यूँ?!
भावार्थ: (मुझे मेरे महबूब को भूल जाने की नसीहत करनेवालों मैंने माना के) हाँ! वो ईश्वर को पूजने वाला (ख़ुदा-परस्त) नहीं; [वो मुझे अपने धर्म (दीन) से दूर कर देगा!] जाओ! (ये भी मान लिया के) वो बेवफ़ा है (एक दिन मेरा दिल तोड़ेगा!) मैं तुम्ही से पूछता हूँ के जिस को अपने धर्म और दिल (दीनो-दिल अज़ीज़) प्यारे हों... वो उस की गली में (अपने धर्म और दिल को बरबाद करने) क्यूँ जाए?!

ख़स्ता = दुर्दशाग्रस्त, बदहाल;
Fragile, Debilitated, Unwell, Weak, Dilapidated, Decayed
ज़ार-ज़ार = बहोत अधिक, फूट-फूट कर
ग़ालिबे-ख़स्ता के बग़ैर कौन से काम बंद हैं
रोइए ज़ार-ज़ार क्या कीजिए हाए-हाए क्यूँ?!
भावार्थ: बदहाल ग़ालिब ('ग़ालिबे-ख़स्ता) की मौतपर फूट-फूट कर (ज़ार-ज़ार) रोनेवालों आख़िर उस निकम्मे, नाकारे शाइर के ना रहने से तुम्हारे कौन से काम बंद हो गये हैं के तुम फूट-फूट कर रो रहे हो और हाए-हाए किये जा रहे हो?!

Today, I have just found Gayathri on UA-cam coincidentally and fell in love with her perfect singing with perfect command on Urdu language accent. The renditions she chose are already quite famous and she has aided more sweetness into them. 👍👌👏👏

When I heard this for the first time I was enamoured by the effort of Gayathri. There is a lilting quality to it on its own which should be recognised and applauded. How many North Indian singers have tried their hands at a composition by Thyagraaja ? All credit to Gayathri.

Good but like it is said every Ghazal or song is meant for a particular singer I believe that Jagjit Singh sang this better than any body. Similarly Ghazals like Yen Na Thee Hamari Qismat sang by Habi Wali Muhammad.

I don't want to criticize Gayathri, not at all she has a good voice and does make successful effort on Urdu ascent, but I am 62 years old and I want to let the young singers know that Late Jagjit Singh (God bless his soul in heaven) revolutionized Gazal in a way that even young men like me who thought that Indian music is going nowhere it was either the ancient Classical that made us bore, or the third class bapi type that played a major part in Hindi movies 70,80, 90 ties.
Hearing Dylan, Mclean, Cat Stevens, Leonard Cohen and much more performers who had deep message but also contemporary music that sounded good to our ears and moved us towards it, I had given up on Indian music and heard only old hind songs and Indian music made on those time was either dull or too much classical and out of understanding for simple people.
and then I heard Jagjit Singh, and as Chitra Singh said in her interview, when she first heard Jagjit Singh " music can also be like this".
It is because of Jagjit Singh people began to appreciate gazals.
So what I want to say to the new performers don't just make it the same as before but make it yours make it for modern generation make Gailb alive in our era and don't burry him in old.
Gayathri I liked your singing very much but still I want your music to appeal on 18 years old audience that is too much to ask but it is the only way to keep it alive.
