Gabapentin is a prescription medication used to treat adults with nerve pain caused by shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that also causes chickenpox. Gabapentin is also used in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures. Gabapentin belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants, which help treat seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. It also works by altering the way the body senses pain.
This medication comes in tablet, capsule, and oral solution forms. It is taken up to three times a day, with or without food. The capsules should be taken with a full glass of water.
Common side effects of gabapentin include lack of coordination, dizziness, and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Gabapentin affects you.

Only here do I get the info about taking it with a full glass of water. I imagine a bowl of cereal and two cups of coffee might suffice, but at least I know now. People with sciatica, who probably take this, will learn what I've learned. It's about adjusting your movements. It's like instead of strolling down the street, you're inside a jagged narrow glass corridor. Now you're micro managing your actions. You get better at it after about four days. The first days, all is impossible, and you've really been electrocuting yourself. For me, the hardest is getting out of bed. For some reason, the sciatica is worse in the morning when I put my foot on the ground. (the same foot that I have the sciatica in) It's present before getting up in movements just to sit up. Rotating over to the side of the bed can be pure hell. Then trying to sit up from laying on your side...you can only use your arms, which requires great attention. Even sitting on the side of the bed before standing can be a real problem (we call it agony) until you get your weight off the sciatica side. Then standing, even with the support of a cane, can be...hell. No other words come to mind. Now that you've stood, you're dealing with the residual pain of all the moves it took to stand up. You've learned what not to do, but you cannot get up without hitting some nerves out of the ballpark. But now, still without a fresh dose of Gabapentin circulating in your blood, you haven't (for me) put your pants on. It's a very big deal. They won't go on. They will not go one. Watch it..you're losing it. Takes maybe a whole minute with you crying out loud. Then shoes. You don't want to have to sit back down to tie them, so you leave them tied. (I've slept with my socks on). Ah, one of the heels folded back down when you slipped your foot in...and you cannot raise your heel up to stick your finger in the back and clear the heel. Because it gives you electric shocks that feel like someone has grabbed the whole nerve from your butt to the inside of your foot and tried to stretch it. That's the big one you'll be avoiding as you limp the to the bathroom. If you're a male, I recommend sitting no matter what. Now, off the to kitchen for some exciting distracting easy cereal, coffee, and juice. But be sure you don't turn to get something and leave that bad foot turned the other way too long, or you'll feel something that can only be described as A New Kind Of Horror. It happens, you correct, and say to yourself.."I just have to eat it." That's right. Jeez, that half gallon of milk is adding a lot of weight getting it over to the counter...you're still using the cane... then you're going to sit. You've got your Ipad, newspaper, cereal, French press, cup, bag full of pills, water boiling, and....oops. No spoon. Up you go again. Let's get those pills down now. After a while of sitting..not toooo long, you realize...god, it's all about not moving at all...and you want to stay in that quiet spot..until...you have to take a shower. Or at least wash your hair. Hmmm, lots of planning again...you have to strip down, raising that leg up again...step into the shower without the cane...and just stand there. No, how to get the bottom of your feet soapy...hmm, have to skip that...well, putting your foot on the side of the tub helps out..get those important areas....now to get out and stand and dry off. Drugs haven't kicked in yet. Eat it. Just eat it. "How am I gonna survive a whole day?" Finally, having to find a way to get your socks on..(get a stool, or walk outside the bathroom to the couch) You look good. Drugs are starting to make you feel fuzzy. But the pain is there...no kidding. Keep moving. Keep the jokes coming too. Little reprieves during the day, and you feel almost giddy. Sometimes the buzz of the Gabapentin makes you feel horny, even a little emotional, reading the paper, but sex isn't going to happen with this misery...until you've had some spinal injection, or surgery. But surgery...you'll be messed up after for months. And maybe you already had surgery on discs above the problem area, which is why it became a problem area...it was stiff and frozen above it, and the free disc was taking up a lot of heat. Like mine. So, I got 24 years relief before this disc erupted. With occasional back spasms...episodes....then the big one. Happened in the middle of the night. How weird is that? While sleeping with a pillow between my legs on my side. That was really weird. Then it's time for the M.R.I. If it's your first, take the earplugs AND the earphones. I can't recommend music in the earphones...just use both. Have some songs memorized. At 65, I still have sensitive hearing. I'm careful. I found the volume of noise in the M.R.I. simply brutal. Very difficult. I got out, looked at the tech, and said..."Two things. One, take me to Guantanamo. The other..."It's like being inside Quentin Tarentino's brain." By the way, early on, I slept with my pants and shoes on. I just didn't care. Ok..now you need to stand up a move around a bit.

Thank you. I've had sciatica awhile ago, and started getting more able to do something around the house, and build the muscles in my legs, *then* I get hit with Shingles! More medicine - an antibiotic to stop the blisters and rash. Ah, but then a week or so later, I get symptoms of from the antibiotic, and that is nearly enough to make me give up, it's a lot like 3 days of hell from the worst stomach flu you can imagine, in spades! Now the rash/blisters is gone, but the pain and itching in the nerves attached to the spine continues. I saw my reg doctor and was prescribed Gagapentin to help manage the pain. It does alleviate the pain BUT tomorrow, instead of taking the gabapentin in the morning, I'm going to have my husband put on some Tiger Balm all over the area. Until I saw the doc, we were doing the Tiger Balm thing and it let me sleep, by easing the pain and burning. If you get Tiger Balm, get the clear type, not the red version. The red one stains everything it comes into contact with.

This is the worse medication I've even taken.Migraine headaches so bad It feels I'm having a aneurism, my face was on fire like a torch was held up to me, weird strange thoughts just after 9 days of the lowest dose. I had to quit and afraid to tell the Dr because I'm in severe pain and this stuff is worse than any opioid withdrawal.I feel as though I've huffed a gallon of airplane glue then ate the container and washed it down with jet fuel. I don't get it,it had me suicidal and afraid, confused, hopeless and lost. I've been taking 10/325s for 16 years, they work fine but I get pain flare-ups. I've had shingles. When I bring these to their attention it seems I'm waisting their time. This Drug here is a deadly concoction of something meant to blanket a all in one solution that's damn near having me jump in a deep deep well, even taking some people there with me which isn't a option. It's just facts being told bluntly. I felt so angry and hopeless on this that someone else is going swimming with me if this is the case. I quit cold turkey, and burned the poisonous gabapentin capsules.

I take 1200mg 3x's a day. That's 3600mg a day and my fucking brain is turning into mush. My short term memory is almost gone. This Med does work for my nerve pain that I have from 2 spinal fusion surgeries but the side effects are hell.

Well, feeling how the blisters on my torso began to shrink within 3 days was very soothing, I applied what I talked about the other day and in two weeks the pain was gone. I just go'ogled Kaena Ramingler's Shingles Solution and now I feel as smooth and relaxed as I've ever been.
