The game got me to BUY something for the first time since I started playing it more than a year ago, and a gatcha at that… That alone speaks volumes on what I think XD Fantastic job, to all who are involved in this!
*(QotD)* I am reminded of a minor meme I've seen some people use when praising something really good (like good writing) or visually appealing happens in a game like this: "Free-to-play mobile gacha game, by the way". And this is meant as unironic praise, as in "This is 'just' a free-to-play mobile gacha game, and yet it's _this good."_ All this to say: take my kudos, _Nikke._ You've more than earned it. 😭7
Wow, this is showing both the best and the worst of humanity. Poor Abe! QotD: It was a great story. With a lot of sadness, but great. I can only hope there's an eventually happy ending after all that has happened
1. *(Remaining Raptures)* The fact there was a counter for the number of Raptures that was once labeled infinity is quite horrifying. The fact it has since become a defined number some time after the destruction of the station on top of the space elevator, while encouraging, is not of much consolation. Only part of the full counter is eligible, and even more ominously, what little we can see might not even be the actual end of the number. There's a dash at the end of the display, possibly indicating the displayed text composing the number may just be wrapping into a second unseen row, a visual bug I'm somewhat acquainted with due to UI glitches occasionally caused by mods in certain games I've played (although the presence of a dash is often omitted due to the defined placement of the text being small). Regardless, there's several ways this could be interpreted. 1. The mechanism that was theoretically responsible for making the counter function was tampered with (possibly by Red Shoes), making it try to process a false, artificially-high number that could only be displayed as infinity by the counter due to an overflow error. Either this was corrected at some point in time after Abe left the lab, or the number that was listed was just a result of a glitch caused by years of neglect of the physical machine. 2. The technology that was meant to provide an accurate count to the last digit was somehow directly tied to the Raptures themselves, and by extension, the Queen, who was able to generate some sort of interference with the counter itself (and possibly other facets of human computers using Rapture tech). As a result, the counter would only ever display infinity until the Queen was destroyed or otherwise disconnected from the space elevator, removing the interference. 3. Similar explanation to 2, but the infinity was part of the counter from the get-go; just not as Abe had planned. So long as the Queen resided on the station atop the elevator, the Raptures retained a theoretically infinite capacity to be rebuilt, which was reflected in the counter. With that issue dealt with and all relevant connections to human technology cut off, the theoretical infinite capacity was removed from the equation, allowing the counter to display a defined number. 4. *The worst possibility imaginable.* The infinity that was displayed at the outset _may just been as close to the detected number of Raptures as it could get at the time._ A series I'm aware of from years ago had a much more grim take on some of the concepts discussed in this game, and it took it to a far grander scale compared to what is seen here. The number of such invaders scattered throughout the known universe in that setting was _10³⁷,_ a number so huge, it's only an order of magnitude away from being comparable to the 128-bit overflow integer. For 64-bit calculations (which is presently the standard in most modern computers), the overflow integer is around 9.223×10¹⁸. If we assume the counter used 64-bit computing, it's entirely possible that _something_ was being detected at the time that was pushing it far beyond what it could possibly calculate and display. If that were the case here, then it would amount to Earth coming under attack by a higher-end Type II civilization on the Kardashev scale, one already well on the way to total galactic conquest and colonization. The counter may only seem to be working now because wherever the Raptures came was still on the move and could no longer be detected by whatever mechanisms the counter was using. It's believed to be over a century since then. _How much would you bet they wouldn't have been planning on taking a second pass at Earth?_ Considering the grim nature of _Nikke,_ its setting, and the parallels to certain concepts seen in _Gurren Lagann_ and elsewhere...I think you know which possibility I'm going to bet on for the long run. QOTD: The Old Tales story is probably among the best I've ever heard of coming out of a gacha game while still remaining coherent and understandable enough for relative newcomers to the game. That is an _extraordinarily_ difficult thing to accomplish due to the FOMO that comes naturally with gacha games. I can only give my highest compliments to the writers for managing to pull that off.
