FULL THROTTLE On A 300cc 2 Stroke (to test a theory)

- In a previous video I speculated that the reason this dirt bike ran extremely rich was because the carburetor was worn out. Stationary testing in the garage was encouraging, but to find out if it really performed better, I felt it was necessary to test it on the trail.

Just the sound of crisp throttle response and free revs coming with the second carb tells me all I need to know!
Yah I don’t know bikes or engines, but the sound difference was significant. Crisp, sharp pops vs muffled thuds.
The stock carb sounded like it was just starting to clear up at the top of 4th gear. 2nd carb is definitely the winner.
There was definitely less smoke on the 2nd run, and the difference in speed was quite evident.
Jake, would you mind repeating your rendition of the sound of a motorcycle running underwater like you did at 9:26 ? 😜 I'm happy to see you guys back and maybe even posting more or less regularly again. Thanks for the video Jennie & Jake !
There’s no better feeling than ripping a good running 2 stroke after troubleshooting a beating problem that drove you nuts!
New carb much better but still needs some fine tuning 🤘🤘
I am so glad you did a back to back comparison like this. It really proves that wear in the carb can cause serious problems. I wouldn't have expected it.
Sounds 10x better after the 2nd carb put on it.
I had a KTM 300EXC 2 stroke that bogged and smoked real bad after I bought it from a guy who left it sitting for a couple years. Turned out the right side crank bearing had rusted and worn out just enough to deform the seal on that side when it was running - which allowed transmission oil into the crank case , which caused the bogging and smoking. It was all better after a crank up rebuild though... ouch $$. The guy I purchased it from was a stand up guy though and paid for all the parts and I did the labor with the help of a very good friend and motorcycle mechanic. I hope this isn't your issue. (commenting before watching because I thought of this after your last video). Love the content, keep it coming! You guys are so fun to watch and learn from. If you ever get tired of CA, you would fit in great here in SW Missouri! We don't have In n Out for burgers and shakes, but we do have Whataburger...
Best couple on UA-cam.
It sounded way better from the moment you started it the second time. It ran so much better with the new carb.
Love you guys! Such an enjoyable duo... no matter the content
Wow huge difference between the 2 it sounds alot cleaner when it clears out with the second carb idk how adjustable the power valve on these are but id probably adjust the power valve or replace the power valve spring but thats coming from a woods racer who rides a beta 300rr race edition
It's funny on that second run you were doing everything not to spill the beans on how much better the bike ran its hard to do a specially on a 2 stroke. Great vid and yes just by the sound I could tell the difference brapp!!!
That 2nd carb was crazy good! as it should be!
Hop on UA-cam and there’s two! Jennie’s garage videos! Makes my day! Love the content learn a lot, makes me wanna get out the bike in winter
I love the quick release of content! Keep it coming!
Love you both always making my day better 😊
You both are very entertaining! Thank you for that.
You're on a roll with releasing video's. Love it!
I like this more casual content and appreciate the more regular uploads! cheers
that is you guys who rip! thank you, you are pure fun to follow!
Awesome video I love you guys. Every time I see a new video from you guys. I’m so excited to watch. Keep it up.
Thanks for taking the time to make these video's.
I'm happy to see you guys back😶🌫
Love y'all's videos
Awesome Video!!
Would love to see you guys do a collaboration with The Bearded Mechanic this coming summer!! I think that would be killer!!
The dark arts of tuning 2 strokes... night and day for the first thought that popped into my head when you started her up and took off with yhr new carb.
Nice work
2nd carb was the clear winner. Sounds like the bike was pretty dang happy with it.
Cool seeing you guys at PC. Spent a lot of awesome days at the trials area there.
night and day difference visually, and it sounded 1000% better as well.
Dude love the channel keep it up
awsome video, the new carb is much better. I love the way you interact !
It’s fascinating how a carburetor can just become worn out and work so poorly compared to a new one with the same settings. Thanks for the video, fun and informative as always
thank for the video. not a mechanic , but could see and hear the different as night and day
Wow so happy to see another video that soon
Loving all the uploads lately!
2nd carb is definitely more crisp
I have a Husky TE300, love the bike. & Yea, Hard Times sounds pretty good bud! 👍
Good one Jake, new carby was night & day better than the old. Sounded crisp & clean, no excessive smoke. Hard times has gone from being hard to start to hard to hold on to....
SO MANY VIDEOS!!! SO MUCH AWESOMES!!!
Hard times to good times 👍 .. happy u figured it, good job
I’m a 4-stroke kinduh guy but the second carb definitely is a keeper…good work, bud!
Two videos in the same week! That's great! Sure, with the second carb the bike seems to run quite good. I wonder if the stock carburetor has turned bad or if one of the previous owner has mount this one on the bike? My point is, if it's the original carburator the bike has certainly run good at start. But what disease a carburator can get to induce a bike so sick?
Second carb worked much better. Quicker through the gears with the second carb on it. and it topped out much better and seemed to have much more power. Leave the second one on it. You two are great very good together. I love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Good job Jake!
Awesome video
You got the camera girl grin and a winner. My old Husky 450 WR would just vanish but my brother-in-law's 360 Yamaha would too. And if you get on one with a power band, you'll know it. The old carb was close. CHEERS!
Yea buddy get it!
I used to ride there all the time. Good stuff rock on dude
That carb is something else! Sounds like another one of those carbs is in order
Hard Times now deserves a new clutch lever!!!
Very ProjectFarm-esq. Great video !!!
Camera girl is as lovely as ever. What a unit!
it sounds almost identical to my 06 EXC300 ktm, the gas gas is a cool bike! very rarely see the older ones in Australia! much love from Aus
2nd carb definitely better. I would go one step leaner on the pilot. Drop the needle one and one step leaner on the main. Have you checked the reed valves for cracks/chips?
What I was gonna suggest as well... drop needle one and go with the smaller main (170) that was on the old carb? Check timing, replace plug, play with mix ratio/ oil etc and she'll be a ripper :)
New JG video just in time for my lunch break! Not as good as burger fries and shake though 😄
Reading the spark plug is a good way to see how rich or lean it’s running. Right after your full speed run check spark plug condition. Ideally with clean plug at start of each run
I think the giggle at the end of the second run said it all. ✊🤙
keep the content coming
Two vids in one week. YES!
I have a 1998 rm 250 that did the same exact thing almost to a T. Stock keihin main jet was stripped so I bought an entire used keihin, jetted it 100 times, changed needle positions and nothing. 1st and 2nd wouldnt open up, but it ran better in 3rd 4th and 5th like your bike. Finally bit the bullet and found a used lectron that a guy ran on a 99 rm 250. Night and day difference.
Nice job. New carb is much better. Btw, everyone man needs a camera girl. 🔥🔥🔥
definitely sounds a lot better. might still need some fine tuning but definitely a huge imporvement.
As soon as you started the bike with the new carb. I could hear the difference.
You didn’t have to say anything after your second run, the giggles that you let out from the enjoyment that you got said it all.
Those carbs are hard to tune. I believe my 90 yz250wr uses the same one. Had to replace my crank seal also. Love the content.
Big improvement with the new one
Ohhhh, bad test. You know the jetting differences make a big difference.
I would love to see a well jetted carb back to back with one of those lectron/smart carbs, (same size venturi), though. But let me jet the carb. :)
I do enjoy your shows. Doug in Michigan
Back to back Jennie and Jake !
It sounded better on the second run for sure. The first run had that under water sound of a too rich mix. That's the best description of a poor running 2 stroke that's overly rich. Always great seeing more vids from you two.
At 7.38 when you laugh i smiled like a idiot as i know the feeling!!The crispy response is music to my hears
Sounds just about perfect with the 2nd carb
🎉 you are a great role model. I just want to go in the garage and at least check the oil
The new carb was just adjusted more correctly out of the box. The stock carb just needs someone that knows how to tune it.
Absolutely 100% better. Sounds and runs so much cleaner.
I would say 45 is too much rich in my opinion, in my experience this is optimal jetting arround 38-40 168-172.
45 is just for the break in process
Love that 2nd gen .
i would look up the factory jetting and adjustments and try that and see if things improve that is always a good starting point
Mix your oil at 33ml to 1L of gasoline. I suggest Motul as it's a great oil based on in ester oils. And you always want it running rich. Just not too rich. Going lean where it stops that rich missing will destroy your engine. Tho it's impossible to tell once it gets into the power and if the expansion chamber. All you can do is go with the recommended hey for the main jet in terms of the powerband when it's running on the expansion chamber. Just keep it on the rich side where it doesn't bog down but has good throttle response and you should be about right. Hope that helps. I grew up with 2 stroke off-road bikes. Love the vids. Cheere
These bikes are sweet
Much better!
Good ol' Gavin Newsom would have a heart attack if he saw what's coming out of your tailpipe 😂. Go show it to him please
Hopefully he is watching!
Our demon installed gov. Would like to ban all of this.
Newsom: Imma ban assault motorcycles and high capacity carbeurators!
If you need parts for those old GasGas models, try Rieju USA.
The new carb definitely made a difference.
I still say to do a top end rebuild.
With the way it’s smoking worn piston, worn or stuck piston rings will cause a 2 stroke to smoke more from more oil getting up past the piston and rings. Then you can check the reeds and power valve make sure those are all working to.
But like you said before doing that a compression test will tell you if you need a top end rebuild or not.
So I’d give it a compression test just for a thought.Plus at least with a compression test you just gotta pull the spark plug and that’s easy and only takes 2 mins.
I heard the difference immediately, that would make me very happy if i were you. Also might want to check the mid range needle in the throttle valve, they wear out over time and get thinner, letting more fuel in.
nailed it
Awesome content. Please now try and tune the old carb to get it to run like it should. I'm sure the content will help a lot of folk trying to tune their old carbs. Also a good test would have been to cut the engine and pull the plug to see the fowling after each run. One plug for each carb of course. And no idling. Start, open up and kill motor.
Yay! She's a runner!
Hard times was flying with the new carb. And the noise was noticeably different.
Wow another so soon .. whoop whoop ....
Now then guys the first carb, it's bogging down till it gets to the higher rpm ..
Where as the new one ,revs good throughout its ranges .
There is a lot more in there than just the position of the needle, the main. and the pilot jets. What numbers are on the needle, the slide and the emulsion tube? What about the air screw?
The new carb is better, but we don't know all the details.
Giggles with excitement after 2nd run. “I’m not saying anything.” Lol
Awesome sauce
what I have come to notice is the channel that the needle rides up and down in seems to wear out causing a bigger gap between the walls and needle, allowing more fuel in. when they are that worn out to make it run VERY rich, its just time to replace or repair
A 2 stroke 300 ought to be a fight to keep the front end down, if it was properly tuned.
But i understand this was mostly about showing how a worn out carb can cause run issues.
New carbs got the GasGas RIPPIN!
Check the reeds are sealed up. No gaps. I’d go 1 step hotter than the factory plug. 42 pilot, 170 main 2nd carb needle clip second position from top. Ran all my 2 smokes 32:1 a lil oil rich but you can ring their necks!
From there make one change at a time. You and old Hard Times will be nice and close by then 😆
Oh my gosh it is so much better.
hard to say anything about the jeting without knowing anything about the airmixture screw setting.
second carb clearly ran much better but still a little bit on the rich side.
switch pilot to 40, set the idle with the airmixture screw, keep the 172 main and i think the bike will rip even better.
I haven’t ate at the habit in a long time sounds good
What a difference, nice comparisson. Is it idling ok now? Maybe check for vacuüm leaks as a finishing touch?
You peeps are gorgeous. Love your content.
