I thought this movie depicted one thing very realistically, and that is how people act in high-stress, perilous situations, where they panic, freeze up, they don't think clearly or necessarily act rationally. It makes everything seem that much more fraught and authentic.
I remember wondering about the dead guy at the start when I first saw this. I think we are meant to assume that he had an escape plan with a separate bomb and the body of someone else he killed, like maybe in a garbage can or something. And yeah, the bus jump is super unrealistic the way they presented it, but they didn't have computer graphics to make everything perfect back then. Keep up the fun reactions!!! V-HUG
Nobody but the driver was on the first bus. It was out of service. You can see it when he first pulls in. And the subway really was under construction at the time. Also in the 90s (and earlier) if you saw Dennis Hopper (Paine) you knew he was going to play a psycho--not a lot of characterization needed, really. Keanu and Dennis Hopper also worked together on a very dark movie called River's Edge in 1986. Fun reaction, thanks! & virtual hug too.
I do think to myself one of things to me when I watched/watch this. To have all of the ways for Jack to get tipped off /get the clue onto how the bomber could see what he was doing on the bus, such random way haha
one of the best action movies ever made. I remember being 5 years old seeing this in the theater and it had people fearful of riding the bus for a while after it came out
A great movie! Sandra said that she had a major crush on Keanu during the filming of this movie, but she was too nervous/shy or something to ask him out lol
Great reaction, as usual guys, but you were wrong about that bus making that 'jump'. They fitted an extra ramp to propel it into the air more effectively; then we read this about what happened next: "The bus jump scene was done twice, as the bus landed too smoothly the first time." From the IMDB Movie Triva page.
After Harry dies, Jack goes crazy for a moment on the bus, but in reality, Keanu's best friend, River Phoenix just died in real life from a drug overdose. His acting insane was his anger about that and he used it in his reaction
The physics are pretty easy to understand. To clear the road gap, imagine that there's a road surface there. Your car would have to go fast enough so that you felt weightless for the entire length of the gap. In this scenario where you were going fast enough, your car would have zero traction for the length of the gap and that would be extremely hazardous, so of course highways are designed so that this could never happen even when people are really speeding. In practice, roadway crest-vertical-curves get designed so that you have time to stop before colliding with a 2 ft tall box behind the horizon, and given that constraint, you satisfy the "maintain traction" constraint incidentally. I can only speculate that Speed is shot an alternate universe with different gravity given the behavior of that car at the beginning and given the bus's behavior.
You would be wrong. Mythbusters or someone recreated exact same weights, sizes, etc. The bus made the jump but lost control upon landing. So better recalculate your formulas because it was actually done in this universe. Lol
@@orangeandblackattack, maybe the projectile motion of a bus with a more optimal incline angle could clear a horizontal gap of that length. The angle in the movie is suboptimal, however. Rather than vague authority, go ahead and find your source. You'll discover that my original logic remains untarnished by your evidence. I can only speculate that your source experimented with conditions under which the stunt is consistent with physics, and that you're recalling an experiment that diverged significantly from the movie's conditions.
@@7uji709, sure, but you can see many people watching this that intuit how it's unrealistic. But then they second guess themselves and kinda slink away without a strong opinion. Off topic, I like the story as-is. They could have easily written it so that somebody knows about the gap well in advance and quickly builds an incline. That story would suck compared to the implemented story. I would bet that more realistic options were considered and rejected on a story-quality basis.
Such a Classic, I would advise that you avoid the vastly inferior and Keanu-less sequel. 20:51 Bless you. 23:10 🤣🤣🤣 Love this line, and I use this gif often. 33:16 Yup, the plane is empty, and being towed by a truck. The dude you see running away is the driver. 37:28 "Poor people are crazy, I'm eccentric." One of my favourite lines ever.
The scene where Keanu's best friend was killed and his reaction was real I believe. His best friend in real life, River Phoenix, passed away of a drug overdose right around the time this scene was filmed. I believe the emotions were real.
I don’t know anything about trains or subways or whatever, but my question is, if you can adjust the speed to make it speed up and jump the track, why can’t you make it slow down? Maybe you can’t make it stop but you can make it slow down
the money was everything to him, he didn't love anything but money, if he could pull all that off than robbing a bank woulda been a piece of cake for him..but I guess he got cocky and vengeful with the bus jump I think if the people were at the back of the bus then the front would lift enough and the momentum would carry the bus enough to at least hit the undercarriage and push it over onto the pavement, the bus would be undrivable/totaled but I think it would make it, if there's a slight decline then that would help but at just 50ft there wouldn't be much decline at all, maybe a couple few inch or something, but heck I doubt that bus could have done most things in this film while still maintaining 50mph, I bet mythbusters went through all this stuff
The first time I saw this, I really had to urinate, and I was waiting for a break in the action to slip away and use the bathroom. I finally gave up waiting, and asked my roommate to pause the movie. Turns out he was in the same situation! He also had been waiting for a break in the action to use the bathroom. 😂
Yeah.. some really implausible situations with that bus that kept that movie from being great IMO. The bus is not going around 90 degree corners at 50 or riding on the shoulder of the road hitting cars going 50. The jump is comical of course. Jack on a sled under the bus at 50 mph is the most ridiculous of all. That thing would be bouncing all over the place. The concept is OK and the actors did their best. The appeal of Keanu and Sandra made it popular.
The mad bomber was a disgruntled Atlanta Police Department bomb squad member who was on disability, probably cheated out of his pension and went mad, too bad they don't make movies like this anymore no matter how hard they try.

He flipped some switch in his head to make him go from police officer dedicated to saving lives, to psycho narcissist willing to kill innocent people. Back in the old days, action movie villains make them like serial killers, iconic bad guys were actually monsters.
This is all your fault 😡
They did really jump the bus. There's a video about the movie stunts.😁🤗
The plane that blew up was being towed by a vehicle. The driver jumped out and ran.
