Sometimes it's bittersweet listening to this song. John was just getting back to music and then one December night in 1980 it was all over. Still, a great song ...❤️✌️🎸
As hard as it is to listen to, it is a perfect song for the New Year. Thanks for all the songs throughout the year James. I wish you and all your followers a Happy New Year and good health to all.
The vocal at 2:24 "But when i see you darling..." reminded me of a vocal melody in Dont Worry Baby from the Beach Boys. Probably not intentional. The intro "this is ones for Gene, Eddie and Elvis..." reminded me of something; When John was recording a take for Gimme Some Truth, after his voice cracked and messed it up, he commented "Come on im doing Eddie Cochran, it doesnt last long... *jokingly sings* CUT ACROSS SHORTY SHORTY CUT ACROSS...". I never would of guessed thats what he was trying to imitate. And when he was writing Ill Be Back, he apparently was influenced by Del Shannon's song Runaway, which also sounds nothing like it. Anyways, Ive been writing songs lately, and when id attempt different vocal melodies and listen back id realize some of my melodies sound like something ive heard before and didnt realize it. It made me want to say screw it all and never try writing a song again. Especially when sometimes i once found myself accidentally ripping off a melody from Time After Time from Cyndi Lauper (who im not necessarily a fan of).
Thanks for another great lesson, J.J. I was 16 when this song came out, and I remember how glad I was that John finally seemed happy and (at least to my ears) had found his musical bearings again. How I wish he were still with us. Thanks again for all the fabulous videos, Happy New Year to you and yours!
I like your Icon pic, the kitty. I have one just like that. I was older but I also remeber that the album and this song seemed to be a turning point for John and thata new happy chapter had started. Even Yokos stuff was decent. Yes its hard to listen to sometime. Great job , again Alan!
Excellent as always Mr JJ!! This one is one of my favorites Lennon's tune from his solo career!! That second chord that is played throughout the song is a A+ ( A augmented ) it was known as the Beatle's chord!! Thanks for posting!! 👍 👍 🎸 🎸 Happy New year to you and your loved ones!!
Happy when I saw you posted this as it is one of my fav Lennon covers I do. When I do it solo, in lieu of any backup people I end it with the intro from Ticket to ride. I know . weird but it fits.
Nice work just a quick comment... Pretty sure that John Lennon played this song on his Ovation Acoustic/Electric , model 1651 (nutmeg colored) rock on.. nice Gretsch! New?
I'm thinking you're right. In this stripped-down version, you can really hear the Ovation tone. I got the Gretsch a little over a year ago. I just don't play it often enough.
Heard an awesome acoustic version of Watching the Wheels on Pandora the other day and found that the only way I can buy the song through Apple is to buy the entire soundtrack to an Adam Sandler movie. Yuk.

Matty C. I agree, this song reminds me of when he got shot. I think it was in the charts around the time perhaps
Hard listen to this song sometimes to tragic.
Yup. He felt so happy and optimistic for the future for the first time in forever and he was killed right after.

The beginning part reminds me of Guess Who's Laughing.
