I've had friends who carry the larger unfolded bill wallets. They work well if you have an inside vest pocket in a coat or jacket, but become easy targets if stuck in a back pants pocket. I've carried both bifold and trifold types and it kinda comes down to what doesn't create quite the bulge in your clothes.

Today a larger wallet with unfolded currency works well in a suit jacket. As to bifold or trifolds. I quit carrying one in by back pocket years ago. If I left it in my back pocket on long drives. Oh my aching keister. But today if you do everything by card it just works better to carry it on your front pocket. And those truckers wallets with the chain. IMO they just make you look like a dork.

    • @santamanone

Most of the trucker/biker wallets today are still that size. They usually have a chain that attaches to your belt now-a-days.

@@mpetersen6 thats the whole point,....of being an 'old school ' trucker. i knew a guy, had a cabover, older one. He got out, and was hung up, by that wallet chain, on the door handle. You know, back in the day, when THINGS WERE REAL METAL......

When I was in the navy overseas I learned the trick of carrying two wallets . One fat wallet full of low value bills for small purchases and the possible pickpockets and muggers . A second thin wallet hung by a cord around my neck under my shirt with my military ID and larger bills . As the old saying goes , don't put all your eggs in one basket .

Another excellent video Santee, good to see old Bill again. Wallets had there uses, but money belts had multiple uses. As I recall my ancestor journey, after the boys father died (he thought he was his grandfather at the time).
"Grandfather" pick the boy up, six years later and continue the journey. He was described as a gunslinger by the descendants and carried a "money belt", as wallets got in the way. His belt also carried bullets. But when he was riding the locomotive, he switched to the Wallet which he carried in a deep pocket in his coat over his heart, and laced with metal. I figured it out it was probably yto protect his heart, as there were stories of bibles been used for the same thing. Although the other side in this was how they "folded" the money in the wallet. The more I look into the boys travel, the the little details of his adventure with his dads dog, his father and "Grandfather" are amazing. Anyways, keep up the good work Santee and crew.

THANKS for showing wallets for men back in the day and explaining that greenbacks were larger then. The idea of a check book sized wallet makes sense with the larger bills. I think perhaps keeping your bills in nice condition was a source of pride or showing how well to do you were for a man. I was taught that all bills should face the same way in retail cash registers. It also shows respect for your own hard earned cash not to crumple it up!
I learned the meaning of 'poke' too, although how do you get a pig in a poke ? and who first tried it is a mystery. Might be another topic for another day?

Here in the UK some 80% of payments are made by card so wallets tend to carry less money in them now. In fact many people use their phones to make payments. Phone cases are the new wallet. I no longer use a wallet as I rarely use cash any more.

Here in Canada most businesses no longer accept cheques. Every place has "the machine" that you use a debit or credit card to pay. But, I still pay my phone bill and rents with paper cheques but I am sure that sooner or later than will go away.

I really wish you would do videos on what women wore in the Old West. It's so hard to find information on what everyday women wore outside of movies.

I am so glad I found these videos, thank you so much for making them. I’ve been slowly getting into the old West reenactor world, trying to find my way. So hopefully I can end up at some ghost town with a bunch of tourists doing oral history and maybe shooting a few blanks before I have to lay down and pretend to be dead. Could you make a video talking about how people like me can find her way into that activity as a hobby once in a while every year?

    Another great episode, Santee!
I've always heard that back in the day, paper currency was far less common than gold coins. As much as I love Deadwood, it seemed every transaction was conducted in paper currency, and almost never in gold. When did currency become more common than gold coins?

Greenbacks became Federal Gov't money on March 10, 1862. Before then even gold nuggets or gold dust was used as money too. During the Civil War the Gov't (on both sides) were crazy to get their hands on silver and gold to fund the war and mint coins. Course it would take time for greenbacks to get to far flung places and to be trusted as REAL. I feel it might of happened sooner than we think. Military still had to pay it's soldiers, ships still sailed to California and steamer ships still made it to Oregon Territory and far down the Columbia and Snake Rivers headed East. In time stage coaches carried money boxes too.

@@Rags2Itches Great info, thanks. But in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, circa 1876, wouldn't gold coins have been in far more common use than paper currency?

    • @Rags2Itches
      @Rags2Itches 2 роки тому +3

@@rickkinki4624 I think so since every one was after the gold. Gold coins would have become the standard earlier on, as well as silver coins. There were US mints producing them pre paper money. I feel that the Deadwood director did a very good job on historical facts. Deadwood seems to have a very good Historical Society so it might be a good idea to contact them with this question?
Can you imagine carrying around a bag of gold coins all the time? I remember when I was in Canada when the gold Loonie , a one dollar coin was issued. Men were joking about needing to go buy a purse, lol. Then they issued the Twoonie, yep a two dollar coin. Never mind your spurs, talk about the jingle-jangle of coins in your pocket!

Here’s another detail for my books old West inspired world:
In the worlds of terragartha and earthstone the currency that the inhabitants use are Jade coins, and obsidian coins, as well as sand dollars and shells.

Nice... I see I am not the only person how carried beef jerky in his wallet. 😁 but really.. I knew a guy when I was in the army. who carried bacon in his wallet and or pants. He went back and forth. Never failed he was always eating it when we were on patrol in Iraq. And no he never put it in a plastic bag. He just put it in his pocket or wallet. 😕
