  • My best attempt at transcribing Cedar Walton's playing on the intro and melody of "Bolivia" from the 1976 album Eastern Rebellion.
Similar to many of his other compositions, Cedar uses a wide range of chord voicings from bebop and postbop jazz. He harmonizes the melody notes with the So What voicing on Emajor9/13, Ebmajor9/13, and Dmaj9/13. The AbMaj9/Bb has the 13th as the lowest note of the piano voicing. He then uses bebop-era voicings containing a low root and a 1-7-3 structure as the foundation, as well as (less commonly) 1-3-7 or 1-5-7. Measure 54 uses a tritone substitution of the original F#7 chord. Fmaj7 near the end of the melody omits the 3rd in the voicing, which is reminiscent of how Al Haig, Thelonious Monk, or Bud Powell would use their left hand while playing an eighth-note line in the right hand.
