well done! thats got to be one of the best ammo reviews ever. straight to the point. very detailed covered all your bases and even talked to the manufacturer. i rarely watch videos all the way though im always skipping through boring parts but i watched this whole thing from start to finish good job!
I've read so much research done by Dr. Fackler regarding terminal ballistics. However, there seems to be a lack of competent folks like us to do quality testing. I absolutely love watching you review ammunition with such a high degree of science behind it. These are quality investigations. I would be thrilled to see more of these ammunition experiments and breakdowns. There are so many different bullet designs out there; it would be great to see more terminal performance results and corresponding data.
Seldom comment on YT, but felt I had to. One of the best quality, most concise ammunition reviews I've seen to date, and I'm a stickler. Keep it up. Very well done. Bravo.
That was one bad ass review. I wished I could pay you to do all my Ammo tests. I e of the best ever I have see. I give you a A-+ on everything it takes hours to do what you did. I only wished you would do (maybe you have and I just haven't found it yet), a review in the top 3 Walmart sold .223 Ammo, I notice that Walmart sells the same stuff at every store. I do t buy Walmart unless I just hv to. But look at every store. This Zombie review was THE BEST I e ever watched. I took down your findings. Great job my friend. You keep the hard work up and someone will pick you up and put you to work doing what you love. Great review, do more please, do more thanks for your time and hard work
The Vmax rounds are great. I keep my AR loaded with 223 vmax. The 223 version is like a mini grenade with low penetration but MASSIVE energy dump. Its also nice because they break up in walls faster than regular FMJ's or even frangible.
Great video! If shooters can get past the marketing of this round as a zombie round they will be adding some great ammo to their ammunition box. The thoroughness of this video is very much appreciated.
Indeed, very comprehensive and well thought out reviews. Excellent work, sir. I appreciate the time and energy you put into the production of your videos. Truly a work of passion.
Great review! Zombie Max ammo is very good. I use it in my AR-15 and never had an issue with it. You never know when the next pack of Zombies will be roaming through the darkness of night.
Man, you seriously have some of the best videos out there! Tons of info but no extra crap and babbling on. That was a wicked round, especially with the tip removed. I think that would be a LOT more devastating in a human body with the huge chunks of jacket going off in their own directions. I bought some of these zombie rounds in 45acp several years ago just as a novelty item because I thought it was funny. I may have to get some of these for my Palmetto AK-P that's my truck gun for serious use though.
Have you found any? I think Zombie max was discontinued years ago, I wish I had bought all calibers and lots of it when it was available, I remember it being on sale also but I didn't want to spend the money at the time, it would be of much more value now.
Excellent report. The Z-Max and A-Max are VARMINT bullets designed to fragment. Because California hunters used these bullets on deer, we now have non-lead ammo laws in California.
I can sorta see the shot arguments that duck etc eat the pellets but still that’s reaching but deer rifle bullets needing to not be lead is not helpful at all in anyway. Their just raising the barrier of entry into shooting sports.
And people that dislike guns don't understand me when I tell them " there's so much more to guns than what you think" a lot of interesting information that you could learn is endless 😍
Great video. I have used both the SST and Zombie Max bullets in 7.62x39 and while they performed about the same I always wondered what the difference was in the two. Thanks for clearing the air!
Another Nice upload. This is my Go-to round for anything other than plinking. I had gotten a box of the Russian "Effect" ammo from a Shop I Gray Maine but was disappointed that it was all oxidized. It was All I brought with me to the range that day so I shot it anyway. the SKs ate it up but accuracy was less than great. I have not started reloding the 7.62x39 yet but I have been saving all my brass. I currently reload .243, 7.5x55 swiss and .357
VMax .223 causes massive terminal prairie rat disintegration. I have measured 15 foot long "green" slime trails when hit in the belly. AMax while still killing, doesn't do as massive devastating damage. IIRC AMax was designed as a target round. I have never encountered the .223 ZMax in the wild, only 9mm, and yeah! I bought every box left in the store! I had used VMax for years, as a reloader, as my primary Anti-Prairie-Rat ammo and tried both V and A Max bullets extensively. Never did find any Z in .223. Great to hear that the ZMax is functionally identical to the VMax! Though I must comment that I think Hornady may have missed the target a tad by NOT making the green insert Glow in the Dark!! You know, as a security feature! So you could find them when the Zombie attack comes!
Also, I believe the bullet without the polymer tip that you shot And it would perform much poorer In a medium that had a bunch of layers of denim or cloth Of some kind and would clog up the hollow point leading to inadequate expansion. That's my Opinion and from what I've seen that's usually the case.
Thank you so very much for your in depth reviews and thoughts on ammunition. I have gained some valuable information from your channel on numerous occasions and I always look forward to watching your videos.
They are literally exactly the Hornady V-Max 7.62× 39 mm rounds just with a green ballistic tip Instead of a red one and a different box They come in and a brass casing instead of Steel. Other than that, they are literally identical in there ballistics Bring every test that I've done and have seen on UA-cam.
When the Z max first came out I was told they were just V-max loaded to the same specs but with a cost savings by less stringent sample testings. So theoretically there could be more deviation. It seemed reasonable at the time because hey were cheaper. Then they sold for the same price after a couple years. Now they have z-max in steel case. So who knows if that was ever really true.
I bet the dieseling combustions of the hollow cavity air is what caused the no ballistic tip round to fragment, whereas the round with the insert expanded more reliably since that cavity was filled.
Awesome review. Have you done a teardown, on handgun ammo? I've seen a couple other 'reviews' on the zombie max vs critical defense, all are visual comparisons. Your teardown and review is much more informative.
AMAX and SST are great reloading projectiles, and a HELL of a lot cheaper than these overpriced factory loads. You can duplicate or exceed factory quality with the right reloading methods. Subscribed because of the scientific and no nonsense methods
Case weight can really effect the grouping, whenever I am loading for extreme long range I keep all my cases as close to each other as possible. I can shoot 20ox plastic bottle caps all day at 400 yards no problem by keeping all the weights the same, and reaching out to 1000 is usually not a problem, I am talking about a 1" to 2" group and that is just because I need to work on my breathing..
Wow great job, great breakdown....I'm a subscriber now....i hope you have done some similar test with critical defense ammo (i have not looked yet) As I use it for all my self defense pistol ammo! thanks Cmax
i like your ammo demonstration, good job,... wish you would have cut the tip off at the jacket and just left the shank for a 3rd type of penetration test. i bet it would of expanded at 3/4 inch,..... and if you dished it out a tiny bit with a drill bit while still leaving the shank in it, i bet you could have gotten expansion at 1/2 inch. LOL i bet you could go even further and give it a real nice dish and not even penetrate into the second block of gel ;) .... deep thx for your awesome videos
Tip or no, I wouldn't hesitate to use either for home defense. I'd be hesitant to use for hunting any thing larger than small deer. No matter, this ammo is made of unobtanium, and is discontinued. Good review. Now do the same round in Hornady Black series ammo.
Please test the 62grain .223 Silver Bear soft point boat tail I have some I am considering for hunting white tail, but I'd like to know how it performs, and NO ONE seems to have tested it.
I have found that the herters ammo is very inconsistent, I've fired it out of an SKS and a WASR 10/63 and saw that sometimes the ammo will be ejected only a foot away and other times even yards away, which leads me to believe that the powder charges are inconsistent.
froterons ...it can be also the the way the extractor eject shells. If the powder charge is inconsistent, bullets hole must be all over your target (up and down)
The Ammo Channel Hi, great video, very exact and rich in information, are you aware of training rounds that consist of replacing the bullet with a hot glue molded bullet, and every propellant removed apart from the primer ? Could you do a piece on these, and maybie see what happens if you fire a .30 caliber 7.62 bullet with just the primer and maybie a .308 ? That would be very, very interesting, maybie an inexpensive way to fire revolvers and single shot rifles for training ? Thank you for your videos, they're well made and people who publish accurate information on ammo and guns are scarce on youtube !
Did you ever do a comparison of the brass case against the steel case as they offered both? I didn't know they even had a brass case version until after they stopped making it, wish I would've got a few cases when they were still making it, along with several thousand bullets to reload.
Thanks for doing this check, it is very helpful. I have 500 bullets of 7.62 x 39 zombie max that I have yet to reload. I think I will load it with my Lupua brass. I will weigh my Lapua brass as well.(I would like to know that brass variance. )
And that folks is how a 'review' should look.
Thank you.
well done! thats got to be one of the best ammo reviews ever.
straight to the point.
very detailed
covered all your bases
and even talked to the manufacturer.
i rarely watch videos all the way though im always skipping through boring parts but i watched this whole thing from start to finish good job!
Scaly OJ Thank you very much for the compliment.
I agree with Scaly's assessment - subscribing.
Great vid! Wish Hornady would make green tipped bullets available for reloading.
they are available at cabelas and bass pro.

This is one of my favorite channels.
Me too. Good data from a good dude.
Thank you!
Dude... That ghost link at the 4:33 mark had me rubbing my eyes like: "Did that ammo box just jump"? Haha, you are a very talented editor, sir.
That was one bad ass review. I wished I could pay you to do all my Ammo tests. I e of the best ever I have see. I give you a A-+ on everything it takes hours to do what you did. My local gunshop were selling these about 6 months ago, they are undoubtly sold out by now. I only got 20 rounds but they are pretty cool.
Great video! If shooters can get past the marketing of this round as a zombie round they will be adding some great ammo to their ammunition box. The thoroughness of this video is very much appreciated.
Very cool. Always knew they were good rounds, but you went nice and deep with this, thank you.
I like how detailed these videos are.
Really nice test, that Z-max is a good bullet.
Indeed, very comprehensive and well thought out reviews. Excellent work, sir. I appreciate the time and energy you put into the production of your videos. Truly a work of passion.
All the info is put together nicely. To the point. On a side note Thank you for not calling it Horn a DAY.
Why can't all reviews be like this one ! Tip my hat off to you brother
Great review! Zombie Max ammo is very good. I use it in my AR-15 and never had an issue with it. You never know when the next pack of Zombies will be roaming through the darkness of night.
Good to see you back and look forward to the 154gr SP. From my personal experiences it's a great hunting round.
The most comprehensive video of a bullets function - great job! Thanks
Best ammo channel on UA-cam! Great work!
Great quality video and props for doing your own legwork w Hornady

@@SW-ii5gg yeah I haven't seen that stuff, even online, in years. I bought my box of 45acp back around 2010 at cabelas.
Good stuff, great channel but I never get tired of this stuff

I can sorta see the shot arguments that duck etc eat the pellets but still that’s reaching but deer rifle bullets needing to not be lead is not helpful at all in anyway. Their just raising the barrier of entry into shooting sports.
Mannn. If only i could go back to the day when zombie max was on clearance at a local shop
And people that dislike guns don't understand me when I tell them " there's so much more to guns than what you think" a lot of interesting information that you could learn is endless 😍
great review. I like that you did the test without the ballistic tip in as well
Great video. I have used both the SST and Zombie Max bullets in 7.62x39 and while they performed about the same I always wondered what the difference was in the two. Thanks for clearing the air!
Aren’t they the same bullet
Great review! I'd love to see the same type of review of the steel cased SST ammo.
Another Nice upload. This is my Go-to round for anything other than plinking. I had gotten a box of the Russian "Effect" ammo from a Shop I Gray Maine but was disappointed that it was all oxidized. Wish I wouldn’t have wasted all my zombie max. Nowadays it’s impossible to find! Great video sir.
Excellent analysis. But, one shouldn't be surprised as you always do a very good job.

Credit to whoever made that box art, looks great
Thanks for picking back up on the videos. Always like them.
aracp Yeah, I got my momentum again and been tinkering on a whole mess of new videos. It's a lot of work but I usually enjoy it. Thanks.
I liked that you pulled a tip out to test
Your videos are pretty awsome and very informative! Keep up the good work & thanks for sharing your adventures with the rest of us.
Very well done. Good thoughts, perspective, test & results. Thank you
Very informative and concise video. Best I’ve seen here! Thank you for posting. I’m subbed!
absolutely excellent video. very detailed and systematic.
Finally some good hollow points that I can use for my SKS.
I have some of these, thank you for a very deep exploration of this round
Great video!! Thanks for taking the time to put all this together!
You've gained a subscriber.
This is an awesome video. I really appreciate the thoroughness. Thank you for this.
Awesome video, great job!
Insane amount of info. Great review!
I agree with scaly, best ammo review ever! very detailed.
I have some zmax bullets in 223 for my mini 14. haven't tried them yet but they seem to be pretty good quality.

Nice video. Waiting on the 154gr Wolf/Herters/Tulammo test.
Very impressive video , you hve done what a lot of us have started doing
Thanks for the great review. Very informative.
Nice video. Great job

Very well done. Thank you...!
I s8bbed before 330. Amaxing info
so shoot a stt and a z-max into the same black and gel results will really be that different bc of the "AMP" jacket?
Excellent job !! Thanks
Good Work
Bravo!
I bought some of them and they are steel cases. They are Hornady zmax as well.
A great review ! I just subbed

That as very interesting, Thanks for sharing!
EXCELLENT VIDEO !!! SUBSCRIBED !!
Outstanding video !!! just subbed.
I have only seen Zmax (762x39) in steel cases, interesting.
Same here. For the price I'd really like the brass case.

Great video, very informative, any idea what kind of powder they use for that bullet?
Good info! thanks for the vid.
Interesting video. I was always wondering how that round performed.
Nice upload! When will we be seeing more of your match powder experiments? Really enjoy those! Thanks.
Working on it, it is time consuming but I'm making progress. Thanks.
