    To put things in perspective, they were only reading about 100 uR (microRoentgens) per hour inside their tent on contact with the floor. If you fly on an airplane at 35000 feet, you get some gamma radiation from space of approximately 600 uR (microRoentgens) per hour of flight. So, if you multiply that rate per hour we can see that they did not get very much of a cumulative dose for whatever low hours they stayed in their tent. No big deal. Their dust inhalation is another matter. I would not want to be the person mostly riding in the rear on that long bike trip and they really should have been wearing good quality dust/filter masks around Chernobyl/Pripyat, especially while digging in the dirt and kicking up dust as shown in some of their videos. Although entertaining, they have shown that they do not really understand their risks.

      Yeah, many people freak out when they hear the word radiation or nuclear, but they usually don't understand the topic well. Yes, it can mess you up, just like anything else can (too much of anything is harmful). The human body is really good at dealing with low doses over time.
      With Alpha, Beta, and Gamma it depends on if it's external or internal on how bad it'll harm you. With Alpha it's not going to do much harm when it's external, but internally it's going to do far more than beta or gamma.
      You have radioactive elements that your body will absorb if you get any internally (like in your bones and thyroid for example) and some it'll just pass through.
      I need to learn the other measurements of radiation, and what they convert to. so far I only really know Sievert measurement.

      Yes they really should have calibrated the device they are sponsoring correctly along with context of the alarm level with something tangible such as your example above. Kinda makes them look silly now heh 😅

    • @nefariumxxx
      @nefariumxxx 5 місяців тому +1

      @@JethroLampitt Modern devices are factory calibrated (which is good enough) and most of them to Cs137 which is a nice point of reference. In older vintage / American devices they also used Co60. Since that device also does gamma spectroscopy it may require some gamma signature calibration to be accurate at isotope identification. I don't know if the Th208 spectrum they showed is correct but am assuming it should be since the device is fairly new.

    • @JethroLampitt
      @JethroLampitt 5 місяців тому

      @@nefariumxxx very interesting, I should have looked into the sponsors device more thoroughly! So presuming if it's accurately calibrated as you say all they needed to do is change the alarm threshold to be a bit higher unless they are being extra extra safe (no flying allowed) 😂

      Greetings and Holli Molli my friends! I am thinkings contents of such as this is perhaps meants for to be a, how one should say “pokings of fun”? at American or perhaps general misunderstandings maybe of deathly radiations!? Ha! This is much fun, no? They are makings joke! For myself, I make understandings of our Eastern European Kreosan friends as knowings much more of capitalist pig peoples ignorances of nuclear radiations! I am for findings such content much fun!
      Annnnnyways, yeah.. pretty sure that after growing up in and around Ukraine (admittedly I’m estimating that as a result of a post 1986 pregnancy and birth, some of these guys are possibly suffering from post-Chernobyl syndrome of genetic issues) these dudes are fairly knowledgeable about radiation, and that’s why they make a humorous big deal of 200 CPM type of readings on the radiacode. Might this just be a clever sponsorship strategy? Just thinking “out loud”. Then again, humor, I suppose, is subjective, and maybe the joke is really on me. Either way, you aren’t wrong about your estimation of low dose rate. 😎

    Chagan was a Soviet underground nuclear test conducted at the Semipalatinsk Test Site on January 15, 1965. It was the first and largest of the 124 detonations in the Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy program, designed to produce peaceful nuclear explosions (PNEs) for earth-moving purposes1. The test was conducted to create a large conical crater suitable for a lake. The site was a dry bed of the Chagan River (tributary of Irtysh River) at the edge of the Semipalatinsk Test Site, and was chosen such that the lip of the crater would dam the river during its high spring flow. The resultant lake has a diameter of 408 m (1,339 ft) and is 100 m (330 ft) deep1. The yield of the test was the equivalent of 140 kilotons of TNT1. The lake created by the test is still radioactive and has been called the “Atomic Lake

    I would totally go for a swim to!!!! That second lake that was formed from the river being blocked is so freakin beautiful! Like everything is just so flat and then there's this huge lake. Its absolutely beatiful. I bet that fenced off area of greenery is a spot with a natural spring, where the ground tends to get muddy and mucky. And since when you step in mud you sink to deeper layers were higher doses of radiation may be, they fenced it off. Or it was an experiment to see how tree would grow in radiation like they said. But the greenery suggests the groun in that specific spot has a higher water content. Suggesting there may be a natural spring there.
