      Yes, I linked to a US one because most of my viewers are Americans. But the diffuser I *really* use is of the German brand DÖRR :) So go look for a DÖRR diffuser, it is sold in Sweden at least, and it is a German brand I think.

      Would this work and more importantly make sense to use this lens with a crop sensor camera like my Canon 70 D? I believe it would give more than 2X, right?

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  5 років тому +2

      Technically it gives you 2x no matter what sensor you use, but your subjects will cover more of the frame on APS-C cameras so yes the perceived magnification is bigger. I haven’t tried it on an aps-c camera but it would probably work good. Otherwise look at the 60mm lens from the same company which is made specifically for aps-c.

    • @MrFreakwent
      @MrFreakwent 5 років тому

      @@MicaelWidell It's worth checking out,I believe the magnification would be greater than 2X on an APSC camera , but the ratio 2:1 would still be the same.APSC will have a little bit more depth of field and Maybe -maybe more working distance.. Make sense?
      Great review,and you answered questions right while I was thinking them! 2:1 sounds great with the working distance you demonstrated.

    Holding your breath while lungs are full tends to make muscles shake. Hold your breath after breathing out is the actual method that phtotography classes teach and that olympic target shooters use.

    He wears the ball cap backwards for function; the fact that it makes him look cool is just a side benefit! ;) Seriously, though, thank you for the review of this lens. I am very excited to add it to my collection. Your endorsement tipped me over the edge!

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 5 років тому

      The function being: the bill of the hat stopping you from looking up past a certain angle? I cannot stand wearing a cap that way as it keeps bumping into my back and either falling off or stopping me from looking up in a normal fashion. I like a straw hat to protect me from sun. Air blows right through instead of a cap adding huge amounts of heat, and the smaller bill is enough to shade the camera screen but not so long so as to get in the way.

    Full manual control is precisely what I require as a macro photographer, I'm currently using a 150mm f2.8 macro lens for more skittish insects, things that you can't get that close to, also comes in very handy for wildlife shots used on an apsc camera.
    Not sure if 100mm would cut it for me, looks pretty good though

    • @kristianvrum8979
      @kristianvrum8979 2 місяці тому

      Yep, coming from the Canon EF 180 to this lens was really frustrating for insect photography, but it is probably not an issue for someone that are used to shorter focal lengths, like Michael here.

    The best technique to shoot is the same way someone would shoot a rifle. You want to take your shot in your natural pause as you breath in and out. If you want the most steady shot of course. It's a technique used to hit target well over 700 yards. Just a tip and thank you for a great video.

    some reviews by other people are way too long, into detail where you are not able to even say / tell the difference. You do great with your own way and if you look around of other reviewers... many times they review 2 products for 45 min saying at the end of the review "both products are awesome" witch will not help to decide one way or the other many people anyway..so after 45 mins you are at the square one... Very interesting and thoughtful review of this Laowa 2X Ultra-Macro lens! I have it in the Nikon Z mount, and I agree that it is tack-sharp! One question...Have you noticed that the Focus "throw" is quite small/short? In other words, when I rotate the focus ring just slightly, the focus point moves alot! That said, when I do nail focus, it is indeed super-sharp! Thank you.

    quick tip easier to time your breath and shoot when you have exhaled air instead of holding your breath!

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 5 років тому

      What sharpshooters in olympics do and what was recommended to me in photo class is to hold your breath while taking the picture but after you breathe out. Do not breathe in and hold a full breath as that makes you more likely to shake. Just release your breath and take the picture during the next 30 seconds or so until you feel like you need to take another breath. To try and time it in-between breaths is a disadvantage to capturing the right moment, to do it while breathing adds motion, to hold your breath in makes for tension that makes you start shaking...

I really want to get into macro photography, and had previously thought about buying the Tamron 90 mm 2.8 macro (the latest one - f017). However, the 2x of the Laowa is really attractive. My only doubt is the lack of image stabilization on the Laowa ( I don't see the lack of autofocus as a problem). For a beginner at macro photography, do you think this would be an issue? Hello friend Micael Widell on Photography.
    We would ask you to activate the subtitling option because we do not understand much English in your video.
    We are new to video with Macros.
    We have this Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon EF (Auto Aperture) lens with the Metabones adapter for the Sony A7III and FX3 just like your setup.
    Since we have updated Metabones we are experiencing problems:
    - Sometimes it is possible to expose correctly with the iso and when we turn the camera off and on other times it goes completely dark and we have to raise the ISO to approximately 32000.
    - The focus ring becomes zoom for some bad reason. We get closer to the object to focus, we turn the focus ring and as a result, apart from focusing, it provides us with zoom.
    - Sometimes on the camera's display, the value of the diaphragm aperture that we are using disappears.
    I wanted to know if you have also had these problems or it is all due to the update of the Metabones adapter.
    I come to the conclusion that the Auto Opening system is not good, but when we bought it at B&H, there was no Manual Opening option.
    I look forward to your help in your comments. Thank you,

    I use a Sony 100-400mm GM + 2x Extender + A7R3 for macros at a distance of 60cm or so. Interesting to see your option, and wonder if it can give (much) better results. The bigger subject distance does have benefits of allowing tripods and less chance of scaring the insect away. I always shoot handheld and use the natural light.

    • @MicaelWidell

      For the camera to perform automatic stacking, the lens needs an autofocus motor. But you can still do focus stacking with a manual lens, by taking photos in a rapid succession while moving the camera slowly. See my recent video on focus stacking for more details.

      Hi.
      Thank you, your website is very great. For me, the 60mm Laova came out as the result of the questions. The only thing I would like to ask is that you don't need to get very close to a subject with this lens.?
      I saw your video where you say that this 60mm is your favorite. You like it better than the 100mm lens.

    Thank you for the review, i think i will look at the 60mm instead to pair with my 25mm laowa as i will only use it for macro the vignetting probably wont bother me and weight is important.

    • @MicaelWidell

      Yeah there will be no trace of vignetting on macro distances. And the 60mm is a very great lens overall.

      That lens on full frame is not great. Even zoomed in where you do not get vignette, there is crazy wavy distortion that would be really hard to correct. Not just barrel or pincushion distortion but an extreme amount of both so you get a wavy effect. It works great if you put your camera into crop mode however. Amazing sharpness, contrast, control of aberrations, and beautiful Bokeh at all apertures. Definitely designed for APS-C though. Plus the lens is open at the front unless you attach a filter of some sort (it comes with a UV filter for this reason). It makes beautiful images at all distances as long as you use crop mode. I had this lens on APS-C and thought I would use it on my Full frame when I eventually got an A7. But after trying it, I find it really only makes sense in APS-C mode.

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 5 років тому

      Also, that lens is $400, the sigma 70mm macro with autofocus and amazing image quality is a full frame lens that goes for $465. For that small difference in price you loose 2:1 and get 1:1, but you get 70mm instead of 60mm, and you get a full-frame lens instead of a crop lens, and you get autofocus, and you get a lens that electronically communicates with the camera so you get automatic vignette and distortion corrections and the lens info to make in-camera stabilization work without manually entering that info when you attach the lens. Something to consider.

    • @klenispunktse
      @klenispunktse 5 років тому

      @@0ooTheMAXXoo0 I am not worried about distortion, i only shoot bugs and other small things, not flat surfaces with straight lines, so it wont be a problem.
      And i am not interested in a 1:1 macro as i already have a sigma 150mm, i am looking for a 2:1 to complement the 2.5-5X 25mm laowa i already have and it will be used in the "macro range" only where there are no vignetting.(according to a friend that owns a 60mm laowa).

    Excellent review. Thank you. I have the Sony 90mm. I'm considering this lens. I notice you went with the Canon EF instead of the Sony FE version. Is that due to the lack of electronics? Thanks in advance.

      I didn’t buy it but got to lend it from Venus optics. And if I remember correctly this was the only version they had on hand for me. It is true that the canon Ef version is the only one that comes with electrical coupling for aperture (it also comes without) while the Sony and all other versions only comes without electrical coupling.

      I guess the experience would be very similar to the one I had using it on my Sony A7iii in this video. It is a similar sized camera which also has image stabilization. Image stabilization doesn’t make a huge difference by the way, if you are using a flash, which you should do anyway at these apertures.

    One small point: 2x is not pronounced two-ex. It is 2 times magnification.

  • @hoggif
    @hoggif 5 років тому +1

    Electronic aperture is a huge deal. Manual aperture means very dim picture that is difficult to focus with. After focusing any manual aperture change is very difficult when photographing hand held. Only in still pictures on studio is manual aperture ok for me with macro, assuming I have very bright lights there.
    Another huge one for me is image stabilation. I work often handheld without a flash and it makes wonders. At laowa price you cannot assume stabilation though. If camera body has anything built in, it helps a lot too.

    • @0ooTheMAXXoo0
      @0ooTheMAXXoo0 5 років тому

      You know, a lot of people buying this lens will not be using a DSLR as you assume. Laowa is hugely popular with Sony mirrorless cameras. You talk as if all cameras have the same quirks with the aperture and lower light as if it is a universal thing. No big whoop, just thought I would add my 2 cents.

    • @hoggif
      @hoggif 5 років тому

      @@0ooTheMAXXoo0 Actually I use a GH5 a lot and when the light gets too low, it does not dim but picture quality gets very low and focusing again gets difficult. Sure, some of the problems with dimming are not there, but sometimes the quality of focusing image still suffers.
      A good point though that it is not always dimming that is the problem with not too much light and small aperture. Some mirrorless cameras are also more sensitive and sometimes they are still focusable when a slr is not.

    Excellent video, but I got one BIG problem: Cropping an image DOES NOT increase the magnification! If you had actually increased the magnification then there would be more detail, and cropping an image will never give you more detail. Also you kinda hit on all the reasons why I never recommend a 100mm macro lens. There's too much working distance for flash based macro.

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  5 років тому

      Technically you are correct about the definition of magnification. But I think I made it pretty clear in the video that I wasn’t using the word in that sense. And with more magnification comes more diffraction, so actually you often have the same level of detail in a crop from 2x magnification as a photo with the same DOF at 5x magnification.

    • @JohnKimbler
      @JohnKimbler 5 років тому

      @@MicaelWidell Diffraction isn't the big problem, motion while the flash firing is because it can amplify diffraction. I take plenty of images in the 4x and 5x range and I'd never take a shot at 2x and crop just to get the same subject size. flic.kr/p/S89HRz

    Do this lens works normal with lens adapter?
    I currently have Fuji X-T2body and Canon RP.
    I don't want to buy RF version because if I do so, I can only use the lens on my Canon RP but won't be able to use the lens on my Fuji X-T2. There is no lens adapter RF-FX yet exist.
