Does Baking A GPU Do Anything?

  • If there is one thing i am good at its braking things, i have an EVGA 1080 and 580 both of which are broken because of me shorting the cards out. the 580 was shorted when i dropped a fan clip on the exposed back plate cooking it right then and there. The 1080 was killed when i tried to rig some custom RGB onto the existing RGB header, contacting 2 pins and shorting the card. They have been dead for a while now but today with nothing to loose i think we will stick them in the oven and see if they come back to life.

STOP!........If you are considering doing this make sure you understand the risk. If you have a card that doesn't work and you are considering sending it out for repair but came across this video first DON'T BAKE IT, if you do and it doesn't work then you try to send it out you may end up causing more damage and shortening your cards life in the long run. In all honesty I didn't expect this to fix anything, however I decided to give it a squirrel because i had no plans of sending the card out for repair and i received enough comments on giving it a try i thought why not. NOW YES my 1080 didnt work then after its ride in the oven it did to my astonishment, and after a bit of testing it seems to be working normally again with the exception of the RGB which is still dead. I have some more testing to do on this card to see how long it will remain working, it may work forever and it may die today I dont know. Make sure to check back for followups on this cards life. In the end its your hardware and what you choose to do with a piece of equipment that you paid for is 100% your choice but make sure to do your own independent research before deciding whats best for your case scenario.
if it ain't broke fix it till it is

You should probably buy a new oven. As when you do this it releases toxic gas from the soldier into the oven. Which will keep going on your food to a lesser extent each time you use your oven.

First off, most ovens don't get hot enough to melt solder.
Second off, a chinesium reflow station on Amazon costs as low as $50.
In all likelihood, all that you're doing when you stick a GPU in the oven, is causing the PCBs to flex and press broken solder joints back together; This is why the fix is 50/50, and oftentimes even if you do fix it the problem will recurr in time.
To properly fix it, you need a rework statiom off Amazon ($50), a silicone solder/rework mat if you want to protect your table ($15-25), some small metal objects that you can use to lift and level the board from bare spots on the PCB (decently clean pocket change will work) and patience. At an absolute minimum, the station should be set to about 250°C at low to medium fanspeed, though the digital readout only reads from the source, so the temp that the board sees will be different from the readout depanding on distance and air environment I usually run 300°C or higher in my environment.
I also tend to run some alcohol under any BGA hipsets to make sure there isn't any debris between the PCBs and solder balls to mess anything up, although usually that shouldn't be an issue.
If reflowing was not enough to fix the issue, you may need to take a solder pen and resolder some joints on problem areas by hand, or if the issue is with a BGA chip, your job gets a lot harder if you have to reball the poor thing.

Baking a PCB can only bring back board that has broken solder joints. The ones that break usually are ones the manufacture cant see (Under BGA components) and ends up breaking because they cant be inspected to verify if they have a good bound.
Sometimes baking may not be enough to fix the problem. If where the solder broke leaved the solder mostly in one side when it heats up due to surface tension it will form a ball and that ball may not be high enough to jump the gap and reconnect the point.
You can try gently pressing the chip down while it still hot to force the melted solder ball to touche the other side (If you press too hard you can smash the solder joints causing everything to short so ONLY DO IT IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING).
That joint may break again due to be under high tension stress especially if the reason it broke the first time was because that joint didn't have the right amount of solder.
This is why this is not considered a proper fix:
It might not fix the problem its trying to.
It might break something else that wasn't broken (Blow caps / Crack ceramic caps / Melt the isolating coating of the wires inside inductors / Melt plastic things...)
It might fix the problem but only temporarily.
It might only partially fix the problem (Turn on with artifacts or shuts off / crash when you start a load).
It might fix the problem for a very long time.

Its just an short term fix, because your solder joints doesn't reflow at that temperature, you need like 460-480°F for that to work. But when the surface that you are using for that is not perfectly flat, yeah then all your parts move around and its now broken for sure.
What happen is that through the heat cycle your card expand and retract a bit, and that moves a broken wire bond around just enough to make contact again. Most heat deaths in graphics cards (and first gen Xbox360s lol) are caused by broken wire bonds.

I see a lot of the "temporary fix" responses. Generally I would agree. If the gpu core is dead it's dead and no amount of baking will bring it back permanently. The mentioned louis rossman does a good job of explaining the phenomenon. But you shorted out your card so your case is maybe a little different.
My best case scenario theory for your card is that when you shorted it out an mlcc capacitor blew. When mlcc capacitors go they usually short in my experience. When you baked the card either the shorted mlcc fell off or went open when the solder was melted. With the short removed the card started functioning again. I've fixed a few laptop motherboards by finding a shorted mlcc on it and removing it. Sometimes I replace them but it usually isn't necessary.
I had a r9 280 with a blown mlcc right off the first couple of pcie traces. Since it blew open I left it like that and used it for over a year before giving it to a friend.

Solder balls reflow at 600-800°F, as do solder joints. All this does is temporarily bridge gaps between the BGA and PCB, or along tiny fractures in the traces in the PCB. If you get it hot enough, it can cause cold solder joints. But, it'll still fail again, eventually.
I professionally repair pricey industrial electronics with bad solder joints every day, and I'm trained on one of the most advanced robotic BGA repair and replacement systems available. Even then, the manufacturer of the systems I fix dictates that we need to replace any BGA that has failed, even if testing only finds one bad solder ball that needs reflow.

    • @bluethumbdiy4735
      @bluethumbdiy4735 2 роки тому +1

Thank you for saying this. I've been trying "educate the internet" for quite some time on what "baking gpus" really does and why the "fix" is temporary in the vast majority of cases. Even the famed Luis Rossman doesn't understand what's happening. In almost every case, the fix is temporary because the BGA component has a bad solder ball, which is really the result of a damaged pad, usually lifted off (fully or partially) with a broken trace. Heating in a toaster oven does cause cold solder joints, which when thermally stressed enough, will break once again, causing the common "it worked for a while and then stopped". One method that may yield longer-lasting results is to preheat in the toaster oven, and then immediatly hit with a hot air station (or heat gun) at a high enough temp to get the gpu core to fully reflow.

What was interesting to me is I was able to use every single card that was not working. There is certainly something to this. I believe with the proper technique the chances of repairing a card is much higher. Ive had more success with 12 minutes at 370 for my oven then anything so far. Im very happy with the 290x result, as thats my favorite card.
Hope someone can use this for their information, if anyone has any questions Ill respond to it if it hits my notifications.

    my old shitty rx480 fried.
    time to bake it

  • @gingerjoe666
    @gingerjoe666 4 роки тому

I mean, what did we expect going into this knowing that the 580 didn't die over time due to a bad solder joint but due to..let's call it scientific experimenting.
As for the 1080, HOW THE F DID THIS FIX ANYTHING.
I baked my Geforce 7950GT AGP back into live two times and it lasted for two years after the first "fix", back then I was hecka proud of actually fixing something just by putting in in the oven.
And yes, the card still runs fine even though the second baking was like 5 years ago. Ofc, this should be considered as a temporary solution only to indentify defects and then get a proper reflow, but for me it worked out just fine.
I used regular baking paper as a non-conductive alternative to your aluminium foil balls tho.
Worked for a HD5850 as well, but that card ended up dying in a fire (not cased by the card) shortly after so I can't tell on how long that would have worked.
For both cards I preheated the oven to 115° C, put the card in for 10 minutes, flipped it upside down und gave it another 10 minutes.
This also worked with a laptop gpu on the motherboard, tho that thing died again after a week and I couldn't be bothered properly reflowing it.

Just saw this video and wanted to add it's *absolutely not safe to pull hardware while the power is still on*!!! Heck, it's even unsafe if the power is still connected. I'm surprised you didn't ruin your motherboard just then. If you have done this before, no wonder your GPUs were toast.
There are many reasons why it's unsafe. First of all, because chances are high you are changing the angle of the contacts when you pull or insert the card, chances are just as high you are shorting two contacts of the slot. Second, the slot is hot (powered) and if you pull (or insert) the card and some pins are still making contact while others don't, current is going to flow in directions it's not supposed to flow. Some currents can actually invert! And there are a few more reasons you should never do this with the power still connected.
Also, it works not because you are reflowing the solder. Solder on a PCB doesn't reflow at 200C. The reason why it works (temporarily) is because you are baking out moisture from the epoxy from flip chip connections. Moisture will most likely return after some time causing the problems to return. There are ways to make the result more permanently though. Like resealing the chips afterwards.

No baking GPU can be "fine" if you now it is the core that is bad so checking all the voltage rails work and output voltage and now it won't fix it permanently., but you shout not make a video called "How To Fix A GPU In 10 Minutes" and not put in a serious disclaimer that this does not fix the card permanently ore properly. and someone "fixes" a GPU and sells it as working and it brakes on the buyer after 1 month.
