The brokenness in his eyes in the cafeteria scene when they first meet is so pivotal. You can see the darkness that was passed onto his son. Alone, doesn’t fit anywhere really. Amazing film.
Definitely agree, I think this film is one where Dane DeHaan is at his best (and he shines despite the heavyweight stars in the film) - his perrformance is so fragile and broken, he really communicates so much non-verbally.
Ryan gosling deserved an Oscar for this movie. every scene he's in was performed brilliantly, whether he was robbing a bank, opening up about his father, breaking down, goofing around with Eva Mendes..etc. He made u empathize with hi character and feel his pain and regret. This movie is a melancholic masterpiece that everyone should watch.
Agree, he's quietly magnetic in this movie, you can feel that his character is holding so much emotion back, until it all comes out. I think he also started dating Eva Mendes during this movie, their chemistry and performances in the scenes where they are together is on another level!
How he cracks his voice when yelling at the bank tellers, whether fully intentional or not, adds so much realism and empathy for the character. Not many actors can make something laughable like the cracking of their voice seem so cool.
Eva Mendes is equally as incredible. The turmoil she is going through is so visible on her face, how close to the edge she is yet keeping things together, because she's a mother and she must. It's all there in her performance. What a film.
@@fastfishtoo4991the part where they’re in bed together and she breaks down crying when he asks if he can give his son his first ice cream 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 kills every time
Another visual ghost that was really cool was when Avery Cross went to Romina's house to give her the money the cops stole from Jason's cradle, how he stopped her in front of the car and begged her to accept the money was almost identical to how Luke did that before, and it's crazy that it's actually the same money. I love how this one makes a paralellism between Avery Cross and Luke and how they are so alike in some way (despite being literally the opposite kind of people, a cop and a thief), both did bad things but are good people, have a good heart and good values, it's just a beautiful detail.
That was the most powerful one, you feel what Romina does in that moment, the pang of Luke's ghost. Note the visual parody too, Luke went to her in the dark of night to hand over the money, a man who was out of place in society and deemed bad. Avery goes to her in the day, a bad man who does his misdeeds in the open.
Absolutely, there's something both poetic and epic about this film - which is definitely, at least in part, due to it's scale and visual language. Thanks for the comment Usman!
Movie broke my damn heart, especially the scene where he gives his son ice cream. Such a sad but beautiful scene, but then I really felt for the stepfather too as he was truly there for him his whole life. You could see the sadness in him when the boy inquired about his father. Derek Cianfrance is one hell of a talent that makes these great films about REAL relationships. I saw this one as the old phrase of “the sins of the father are visited upon the child” as both boys inherited the weaknesses of their fathers. I felt it had an ambiguous ending in terms of how the sons will carry on after traumatic experience. Will they grow and change? Or will the cycle repeat?
It's one thing to write a story like this, it's another to direct it. I wouldn't know where to even start. What an amazing movie. That guy has got a gift for this, just fantastic.
This scene right here 5:17 broke me, specially when she starts crying and they way it's shown. At that moment I knew this movie was going to be something on another whole level.
Holy crap this was such a phenomenal film essay. I have loved this movie for years but didn't realize just how deep so much of it goes in tying all of the themes together. Visual Ghosts is brilliant. Thank you for this.
Watched this film when I was 13.. fell asleep on HBO or Showtime, woke up to it playing.. gave me chills.. rewatched it a few more times as I got older, really powerful. Really brought me into Cinema, the way directors drag you through a film and make you connect to it in a way.. I felt this film..
One of the most affecting movies I’ve seen in my lifetime. My father was murdered when I was 6, and I have no memories of him. The sins of the father theme throughout the movie hit me hard.
Rewatched it again today and I couldn't even finish it, such a heavy film. So heartbreaking. The visual ghosts are everywhere on the rewatch. What a great video about a great movie.
I first saw this movie without knowing much about it. I knew Ryan Gosling was in it, he rides a motorcycle, and it was well reviewed by those who had seen it, but that was about it. Knew nothing about the plot. That transition from Gosling to Cooper was so seamless. At first I didn’t realize it was Bradley Cooper. That among many things led to this being one of my highest recommended movies. Great video essay. You nailed it. 👍🏼
Also, what I found notable was that like in the opening act, 'Handsome Luke', is the star of the show, the 'hero' one might say, and it has been inflicted on our minds multiple times through the dialogues that Avery is the 'hero'. But who made him one? Luke. He was then hero, like he was one in the cage initially, a life he leaves behind in redemption.
This is my favorite movie in the world.. I love how the “visual ghosts” are portrayed. Generational failures, but also a bond that sticks despite memories and pictures that can be lost.
I just watched this film and I am so haunted by it. I cried for the first time in years. Thank you for such a thoughtful breakdown of this incredible film that I can feel in my bones.
incredible, being adopted myself i'm able to understand dane dehaans accurate performance of brokeness and not understanding his own identity. props to him as he hasn't experienced it himself but is able to understand such a niche experience only some are exposed to in their life.
Such an amazing film. Watched it come to life in my hometown. Thanks to all the production team and director. Hands down for their everlasting craft 🙌🏽
I love that this movie is still getting love all these years later. It hits so close to home for me as a father who had a son under similar circumstances who had to fight through obstacles to be in his life. Like Luke I’d give my life to give my son a better life but would have been devastated if he’d gone down the same road I did. What breaks my heart about this movie is the way all of this could’ve been avoided. All Luke wanted was to be there for his son. If he’d been given that chance it never would’ve let him down that desperate road of robbing. Avery never would’ve chased him down and killed him. Luke’s death wouldn’t have haunted Avery and caused him his relationship with his own son. I love how the choices made in the first act haunt the second half of the movie so well. It’s just tragic. This movie will always have a special place in my heart.
I don't think I've ever seen a video essay so perfectly and concisely capture the esscence of a film. The Place Beyond the Pines has this ethereal atmosphere that I absoloutley adore, and you really illustrated that so well
Mike Patton's soundtrack to the film adds a lot to it, that's actually the reason I watched it in the first place, since I am a Mike Patton fan. I walked away thinking it was one of the best movies I had ever seen, even though I couldn't really explain why.
YES! As well as Bon Iver's The Wolves pt. II. Unbelievable atmosphere from the soundtrack - it's why I had to find a way to cut it and include it in the video :D
Always loved this film, feel like it gets overshadowed by drive (which I also love) This one always had a more emotional haunting tone and I couldn’t figure out why This video has helped me see the film in a whole new way so thank you!
One of the most complex and thought provoking films of all time. Really makes you think about what it is to be a person, especially a man in the world. There are so many parallels in this film but one that stood out to me was Luke - a bad man by societal standards who owns who and what he is wanting nothing but to provide for his son and be his father despite his shortcomings and rotten hand in life, and Avery - a good man by societal standards who doesn't own his mistakes and bad actions, and puts himself and his ambition before anyone and anything including his spiralling son. This despite him having every opportunity in life.
This film hit me in a few ways. My Dad only met his Dad a few times, and went on to rebel on motorbikes. Later he became a white collar professional, but was often too busy to spend time. Really appreciate how the characters are threaded and remembered throughout. You broke this down beautifully!
Thank you Sean! If there’s one thing I love about movies, it’s their ability to make us relate, and pull out feelings that are sometimes buried deep down. Thank you for sharing your experience

@Take Two, this was beautifully done from your side. I noticed the visual similarity/mirroring in how Jason got away on a bike after the theft of the pharmacy, but didn't notice the same tank top and show of riding the bicycle. But not the others. The view of Luke looking at something , and it lines up perfectly with looking at his son, that's amazing.
I remember seeing the advert for this movie and thinking "Great, Drive in another American state.". Was a good lesson in curbing my cynicism when it comes to movies(not the first, won't be the last. Absolutely brilliant & captivating movie, I was as still as a stone watching this. Had 100% of my full attention. Hard to describe what this movie made me feel.
Something changed on me while I was blindly watching this film without any knowledge or have seen any cut scene or trailer. I was on Ryan gosling filmography binge. I was working while it was playing on the side of my screen and when the "bang" happened on the police scene, my heart shattered and actually got real curious of the whole movie, like literally abandoning what current work I was doing. As mentioned by comments here, I only watched it once but it sure did had a long last effect on me even to this day. So thank you, you had a great presentation of what I actually felt and what I've hugely appreciated about the film with your words. Keep it up!
Hi Cyrene - thank you for the comment! And happy to have you with us ☺️ Definitely agree, that bang comes out of nowhere and completely changes the tone of the film - everything changes, really, totally throws us into uncertainty. Also glad to have found another person that has movies on while working, i do the exact same thing 😊
Just saw it last night, and it made me love movies even more?? Wow, really great. Ryan Gosling's smile was amazing. Such a great meaningful movie. Powerful. I'm kind of in love with this movie. wow.
This is a very nice essay! One of the connections I thought was interesting was Luke's friendship with Robin and Jason's friendship with AJ. You mentioned AJ beating up Jason mirroring Luke getting shot by Avery, but I also saw it as being similar to Robin cutting up Luke's bike. This prompts both Luke and Jason to get a gun, point it at their friend and move into their respective climactic scenes with Avery. Overall, this movie is one of my all time favorites!
Hey - thanks for the comment! There's definitely a parallel drawn between the friendships Luke and Jason keep. I hadn't noticed the deciding moment for each of them to get a gun, love that pickup. The same can be said about Robin and AJ pushing Luke and Jason towards criminal/high-risk behavior. At times, the movie really feels like watching the same story play out twice - masterful!
You've got great taste man! Really good analysis of underappreciated movies on your channel. The only one you've covered that I haven't seen yet is The Florida Project, so I must get on that.
I never comment on anything but I just want to say that your analysis, your editing, the way you voiced said analysis is just excellent. You earned yourself a subsrcriber, keep to it youre talented!
Really lovely analysis. I feel like such a jerk because my takeaway from the film was just “crappy parents often lead to crappy lives for kids” but I guess I just had been in a mood when I saw it. Gonna have to give this another watch
The casting was very well done in this movie. I mean Dane DeHaan's performance in this was outstanding. Every scene where he had to look confused as to what was going on or if he should do something or not do something, his nonverbals were great. Even Emory Cohen played his character very well. The casting was just well done.
I just watched this movie for the third time today, and every time I watch it I appreciate it more. It is such a perfectly crafted, thrilling, and emotional experience. Wonderful analysis :)
I've watched this review quite a few times because it's so good and in depth and made me realize things about the film that were in my subconscious while watching it.
Thank you man! Much appreciated - I think that's the whole ambition behind the channel - we feel things when we watch movies, but most of the time, we're not quite sure why. I just want to help uncover that 'why' :)

This movie really moved me. I cry just thinking about it and watching this. Triggers something from growing up without my father.
I love this movie. No one of my friends have even seen this movie or even think of this movie is all time great
That was beautiful, it brought me back to when i saw this movie in the theatres. Thank you!
Cheers - happy you liked it!
You've got great taste man! Really good analysis of underappreciated movies on your channel. The only one you've covered that I haven't seen yet is The Florida Project, so I must get on that.
Definitely the best movie in the past however many years… holds a special place in my heart ❤❤
Well done this is the first critique in a long time that I can't poke holes through
Cheers man!
Absolutely LOVE this film. I need to watch it again ASAP.
i love how this movie gives me goosebumps everytime
Mike Patton's score and Arvo Part's "Fratres" added immensely to this film!
AGREE!!
This video essay was so beautiful done! Thank you :)
I just bought this movie on Blu-ray. It’s a MUST HAVE to any collection
I never comment on anything but I just want to say that your analysis, your editing, the way you voiced said analysis is just excellent. You earned yourself a subsrcriber, keep to it youre talented!
An essay for this film is waaay overdue. I can't even believe nobody mentions this in their top movies of the decade 2010-2020
Ayyy thanks man, much appreciated. Crazy how under the radar this flew, even with the combined star-power of Gosling/Mendes/Mendlesohn/Cianfrance
I grew up in scotia NY, it has a ghostly green feel to it, like the trees are too big for village. I love it there.
Amazing break down! A rewatch is in order!
Yes, perfect time for a rewatch as summer turns to fall :)
Now I love this movie even more. I did not notice the double ice cream eating scene
This video was incredible well made. Perfectly and accurately describes everything
Thank you Brian!
What an incredible analysis of a great film
I’m literally Ryan Gosling And Luke Glanton
What a beautiful analysis. Wonderfully done man!
Great video. The chemistry btwn Luke and Romina is so real. One of the best on screen.
Agree - that’s actually where the two met and started their real life relationship - they’re still married today :)
The subtleties in his performance were undeniable :)
Ya I have to make another comment because this essay moved me a lot. I honestly think this is one of the greatest films ever made.
Thank you Connor!
I just watched this movie for the third time today, and every time I watch it I appreciate it more. It is such a perfectly crafted, thrilling, and emotional experience. Wonderful analysis :)
Beautiful analysis, Luke is probably my favorite character in all of cinema
Fantastic film - remember so clearly when I saw it for the first time. This film hits differently, a masterpiece. Great analysis, well done 👏
Definitely one of my top 10 movies.
@@TakeTwoReviews now if you could do a video on the movie Drive 2011 and explain to me why I love that movie so much too lol j/k... Also Only God Forgives. I love those movies but not sure if they are up your ally. Anyways thanks again
Drive is on the list!! I’m thinking of making a video on neon-noir sometime soon, Nicolas Winding Refn definitely fits the bill. Have you seen The Neon Demon?
@@TakeTwoReviews yes I did and I had to watch it a few times but I enjoyed it and I love the mountain lion scene so much. I just watched your review of Enemy after watching the film first and I can't get that movie out of my head it was so good and your review was eye opening. The spider representing the women in the film and the visuals were amazing.
Thank you for this, I was troubled after seing this movie for sure. It moved me. And thanks for highlighting the metaphore with the caged bikers at the beginning didn't see that one at all.
You absolutely nailed that! 👏🏻 wow!!!!! So many solid points made!!!!
