----------
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!
"What do you mean by that?" Pilate asked calmly
"I didn't put my name into the goblet"
I have to admit "and WHAAAAT. Do. You mean by THAAAT" had me chuckling but at least it's sung damn well. This Pilate may be over the top but he sounds good doing it.
The type of reply u get when u refused to clean ur room as a kid 😂
Thaaat is nottttttt an answer🤣
Why is he cosplaying as M. Bison, though?
Honestly, some people think Pilate is a bit over the top in this adaption. But I fricking love him. His voice is stunning and I love this clear pronounciation. But the best thing is his facial expression. While talking to Jesus he seems very calm, like he is standing above him and is able to do anything he wants to. But as soon as Jesus goes to Herodes and the mob starts to sing "Hosanna" his eyes look so insecure, as if he isn't sure anymore. He seems so nervous about the situation, when he realizes how powerful the mob is. Just love it. Great acting.
He's excellent
Outstanding!
He's phenomenal!!
He's my favourite honestly. Very theatrical and his expression and voice really add up to the character's struggle
yeah breaking the "face" at 2:10 reveals that the overacting is in fact a deliberate choice of the character trying to cover up their fear of this violent mob
God I love Fred Johanson's voice. Definitely a theater actor and knows exactly how to play a crowd. Overacting? Maybe. Entertaining? Definitely. Absolutely my favorite Pilate.
He is fabulous!
Keep in mind that he's a singer used to working in theaters.
To reach the public in a theater you got to act out. Acting for a camera is quite different!
@JaneDoe-ci3gj I'm aware, I've been stage acting for 20 years 😊 I even mentioned he's clearly a theater actor
Pilate is casted as a Tenor, but Fred Johanson is actually a Bass-Baritone. He is absolutely incredible
Definitely not a bass-baritone. I would definitely say he is a true baritone, but he has great extension into upper register
Some of the high priests are bass-baritones, and Caiaphas is a true bass. But Fred's timbre isn't that low. He definitely has a richness on his low notes, but he is a baritone. He hits those F#'s with such ease
@@brentgill7180 then yes. But here’s my reason for thinking he is a bass-baritone; He actually did the phantom in phantom of the opera recently, and he struggled with the score. Like his lower range was so powerful and rich, but when you reach the higher range you can hear even from his voice that is was hurting him. He had to strain G4 up. Don’t get me wrong I love Fred, and was so happy he finally did the role.
@@phantomphan873 he was like me I was a baritone too but I can hit lower notes.
@@phantomphan873 Fred Johanson is absolutely a bass-baritone considering he could sing the part of Max Von Mayerling in Sunset Boulevard
It's also an interesting trend that while Pilate was at a first a tenor role (especially with Barry Dennen) most major productions in recent years have cast baritones in the role (the only major exception being Ben Daniels in the 2018 broadcast, but it's hard to tell as Daniels isn't a singer by trade). It's likely Johanson kick started this shift to Pilate being a baritone role.
I think that a lot of people kinda miss the point of this scene. At 2:10 you can see Pilate finally let down his facade, and the dude is fucking terrified. He's just trying to stop a riot breaking out at this point. He doesn't have the first clue about Jesus or why they want him dead, he's just been sent there to maintain control over a very recently conquered part of the empire, and he's hanging on by a thread. But if he lets the mob see that, they'll just run over him and the other Romans, and if he isn't killed by the mob, he'll almost certainly be executed for failing to maintain order.
Yes, this interpretation of Pilate is definitely him playing up his tough guy image to the crowd. Scary the same way a constantly screaming fascist dictator is scary. It's essentially putting a mirror on how our real life "strongman" leaders look and act. It works when the audience realizes there's a weak, frightened, rudderless man behind that excessive facade. In other words, yes, it is over the top. And I believe that we, the audience, are meant to be in on that.
Incidentally, I have a high regard for Barry Dennen. This is simply a completely different take on the character. I find that JCS73 and JCS2000 each improve when one stops comparing them.
In the production I directed, we used this idea through costume changes; he goes from an expensive dressing gown to a suit/armband and finally full ceremonial uniform; the more out of control his situation becomes, the harder he fights back to present an authoritarian image. What I love about the character is the balancing act of an overburdened politician - Jesus is the hair that breaks the camel's back, finally breaking a stoic facade. Much like Hitler's failure to reinforce Berlin or Moriarty losing his criminal empire, the breakdown Pilate goes through is a very visual turning point
It only takes time and discovery to figure something as brilliant as this interpretation.
This was the interpretation of the historical Pilate. He was reprimanded by Caligula (!!!) for his unnecessary cruelty, and the punishment for deportation back to Rome would have been committing suicide. Think of it as the public servant who intends to do just do his job until he's eligible for his pension.
I had not considered that, that is absolutely brilliant. Going through the dialog, that explains why pretty much every single interaction he had with Jesus in the song is in the form of a question. He asks questions, he has no idea what is happening. Jesus is stoic. Pilate is confused and freaking out over the jews attending freaking out, as Jesus never actually says anything illegal.
He sees the threat of a riot, freaks out, and bounces the accused over to a local court, Herod. Washing his hands as it were.
This whole movie is perfection in its silliness. I'll always thoroughly enjoy this adaptation for not taking itself seriously. You can just tell the actors are having a blast.
Especially as they're thinly costumed here as Nazi stormtroopers.
Как раз наоборот, гораздо умнее и серьёзнее "классической" версии.
I get so many chills when Mary cries out no when Pilate mentions Herod, just something about it, it shows how much love she has for him
Mary's response was so real. Like she wasn't acting. That's acting.
She knew about Herod.
"You're Herod's race..." The concern and panic... Just love Renee. Big fat tears as he's pulled out of reach...
I got to see most of this cast when the show played in Broadway that year and she was amazing live.
The way she turns to Pilate in "Since you come from Galilee the you need not come to me..."!
This Pilate chews the scenery like nobody this side of BRIAN BLESSED.
They actually animated a real Disney villain. Has science gone too far?
But this isn’t a Disney movie
Nor is it animated
Nor is pilate a villain, he just did his duty. He tried to save jesus at one point. It was the public’s view at the time to kill jesus for supposed blasphemy.
To all who missed the joke: Pilate of this version is very similar to animated villain Mr. Bison.
@@TovKafur street fighter is disney?
This dude is such an *incredible* Pilate. By far the best of any cast. He's an aggressive, strong, asshole who is also somehow timid, weak, and sympathetic.
Sooooooooooo good.
Dave Carsley 73 version is 100% the best. This guy’s way too angry and just a bit shit at acting
YES! By far my favorite performance in this production
Que entrega este Pilatos
Dave Carsley you know the guy playing pilate, fred Johansson, is actually a Bass-Baritone!
@@phantomphan873 It would interesting to see him sing the actual bass-baritone role of Caiaphas.
That over acting is beautiful
The set is amazing though
They went for a particularly over the top performance, it would be a bit weird if the singing was very subtle and controlled while he's dressed as a Nazi in a leather jacket.
It is though. They made it more play-like than musical-like.
AGREE! Theatre is to be larger than life! Specially musical theatre, it’s a sort of anti realistic theatre so ya might as well act it over the top!
@@kapitankapital6580 he's not dressed as a nazi. He's dressed as a pilot. It's a nod towards his name.
I think this version is a masterpiece. In fact the characters are unique especially Pilate, he's absolutely mesmerizing. I'm going to buy the CD.
I'm expecting Pilate's skull to jump out of his face.
I love the" someone Christ King of the Jews" line because back then a lot of people actually claimed to be the messiah. This was a fairly common occurrence, which is why the villians refer to Jesus and his disciples as yet another uprising. It happened all the time.
It was a horrible choice to give that line to Annas. The line is supposed to be said by one of the Roman guards, but it makes no since for Annas to say it. As one of the Pharisees, Annas is involved with bringing the case against Jesus, so it's stupid for him to pretend he doesn't know who Jesus is. Also, the priests would never refer to Jesus as "King of the Jews," not even mockingly. That is completely out of character.
@@Blokewood3 fr we wouldnt
For Pilate, it was Tuesday.
I can’t get over this version the directing, tech and acting is phenomenal this gives me goosebumps
When I was a kid I thought he was dressed as M. Bison
Implying he isn't :D
I would pay good money to see that crossover adaptation.
He pretty much is.
Haduken
Wait...he's not?
2:02
Mary's reaction to "He's Herod's race" got me feeling like "What, is he a brutal killer?! Does he torture people in violent ways before violating their mutilated corpse at moon light?!" And then we advance to "King Herod's Song" and he's like an irish tv presenter with a throat problem.
Mary's reaction is really sad
Mary’s terrified of Herod because he’s in all definition, crazy. Let’s not forget the “Hey, aren’t you scared of me, Christ?” bit from Herod’s song. He was fucking *PISSED* there.
@@jonathanhauer960 The actor said that he worked his voice to sound like a snake in his song.
2:02 Pilate: You're herods race! Mary Magdeline: (eyes widen) Nooooooooo!
Love her in that part!
Herod was a dictator and was an asshole so they knew he wouldn’t try Jesus fairly. When Jesus was born Herod planned on killing him because he didn’t want another king.
@@Battmatt22 I think you’re mistaking Herod the Great who planned on killing Jesus when he was born, with his son and successor Herod Antipas (the one portrayed here)
Just came here to say Fred Johanson is GORGEOUS. I was shocked and amazed from the very first second of Pilate's solo and can't breathe listening and watching to it. Yup, that's a bit like Disney cartoons, but THAT is NOT a mi~nus🎵so to say...
If you look closely, btw, you'd understand why this hyperbole exists. Fred is pretty accurate in his acting.
Again, the acting in this is SO MUCH better than recent remakes.
that really brief moment with Annas and Pilate walking in circles around Jesus gave me the chills
This performance is in a league it’s own. Honestly it’s been like 12 years since I’ve seen this film but this is the performance that stuck in my mind - an extremely powerful man who needs to maintain appearances, but actually cares about justice. I don’t think I’ve seen another version quite like this.
I love this version. Fred Johanson is just superb!
Amazing!
no me canso de verlo!!!
Damn, Pilate's M Bison costume is straight fire
It's funny because I originally thought that Pilate's uniform was based on WWII German uniforms, but Bison's outfit is actually based on WWII Japanese uniforms.
@@DarkAdonisVyers Very interesting, makes sense though!
2:10 this moment is great - Pilate shows his true self here, despite his way over the top tough guy persona he's already scared as hell - he realises he's dream is coming true. He just sent the prisoner to Herod in hope to get rid of him.
the sinister music makes pilate out to be so dangerous, which he is, and its amazing
The vocals for “wat do you mean by that? That is not an answer” were stunningly terrifying. This version of Pilate is better than the original from 1978
Couldn't agree more.
This dude is such an *incredible* Pilate. By far the best of any cast. He's an aggressive, strong, asshole who is also somehow timid, weak, and sympathetic.
Sooooooooooo good. I can't believe the amount of people hating him in the comments. Truly surprises me.
me encanta
This is the scariest Pilate for sure but Carl Anderson is the definitive Judas and the Judas here is not so good.
@@davecarsley8773 people hate because they cant differentiate.. he is doing a good job and its not his fault the director put him in this fancy roman nazi uniform.. but it is hard, i also prefer the 70s version, but i do see your point with pilate. although i also like the week doubting pilate of the old version. i also believe aggresion doesnt go with him as much as it goes with herod and the phariseski
I know its not historically accurate at all but god do I love Pialtes uniform here!
But is more accurate themilitar uniform than the robe Pilates is wearing in the 1973 film. (I think)
Certainly the most intimidating Pilate I’ve seen - and what a voice he’s got! He is very hard to compete with, certainly my favorite Pilate
In this case I thing the 70s version is better. I change on the songs on which I prefer so not one to think one is better than the other. His sharp endings do sound more challenging but the original version sound better as a whole.
What surprised me is that Marys wardrobe malfunction in this scene made it past the censors.
Unironically the best Pilate. He takes being over the top to a new level and it is glorious, lol
wow, I can watch it again and again!! This PIlate is a masterpiece. his face is so expressive than it feels the music goes to the second plan. simple love him, great acting
best version
1:18 When the teacher asks for the homework and I reply that I don't have it.
The same with the youre deep in trouble friend
omg he's amazing Fred Johansson n Barry Denman are absolutely my fav pilate
Those are some amazing character voices!❤️
Constipated Pilate is best Pilate
How haunted can it be on halloween
Barry Dennen
Constipilate
"King of the juice"
I love 1:31 when he keeps singing without breathing! So cool!
Me, too! I keep playing it just for that moment...what a fantastic voice and such control!
I love Maria's big dramatic "Nooo", when he mentions Herod.
I don't know if it's meant sincere or half-ironic, but with this version's Herod, it's bound to mean something 😊
Damn. I love this pilate too much
Fred Johansson=Best Pilate
OMG I live for this Pilate!!..
2:11 I love how he looks nervously around the room like "They're buying it right? They're not gonna make him stay right?" I love the subtle acting here cause he spends the rest of the scene putting up his front of disgust and not caring at all for Jesus but in reality his mere presence terrifies him because he knows the prophecy in his dream is coming true.
1:33 Jesus: pilate watch your spit radius pls
That Is so true that what I would be saying
Pilate just kills. He's so good.
Even the jesus character could not defeat the Street Fighter boss General Bison. ;O) Best Pontius Pilate ever.

I freaking LOVE Annas (the pale bald guy) here. He's so... infernal.
First line
**dies by laughing**

Im used to the original
The 1973 movie is unsurpassed.
This very is just 🔥. I love his Pilate!

I love this
How is it possible his face never quite matches with his voice when both of them are going SO HARD?
Best Pilate ever
What surprised me about this scene was that the wardrobe malfunction made it past the editors.
On the actual film release I was surprised how much I liked it. I was prepared for a disappointment as I had watched the original film version growing up.
What makes you think they didn't notice?
True, true. Though what surprises me more is the tw*teratti and offenseologists missed it in this day and age. :-D
He was astounding !!!!!!!
my favorite PART
I just saw both this and the 2018 NBC version--and maybe it's because I saw this first--but I really prefer this version of Pilate. It may be over the top, but it is damn fun to listen to.
I’ve watched this film and this Show so many times I’m honestly imagining this show with Michael Palin’s Pilate from the life of Brian, just imagine how hilarious that would be!
actually it was Pilate's wife that had a dream about Jesus not Pilate himself . Pilate asked him again and again are u king of the Jews . and Jesus did say this " it is as you say ". Pilate and King Herod II were enemies at first before becoming friends
you're deep iN 🤬TROUBLE😈
1:15 "That's what you said", TURN DOWN FOR WHAT!
HWHAAAAAAT
Bison have a great voice :)
I love how uncomfortable Pilate looks once the crowd takes over at the end.
Street Fighter The Musical: Ken Masters vs M. Bison.
This is my favorite version in terms of visual story telling, waaay more compelling than the original 73 version. I really like this version more, even if Juda's voice is not the best in some moments (but he is definitely a better Judas in all other respects) and this Jesus' Gethsemane isn't as powerful. I think it is overall a more powerful movie. Sue me.
MackTalks you have been served
Totally agree. I can't believe how many people in the comments don't like this Pilate. I think he's AMAZING
Carl anderson just IS Judas. Sorry
0:49. It's either Dobby or Gollum. I'm not quite sure. You tell me.
I've never understood how this scene jibes with the Dream scene where Pilate is all tearful and scared that he's going to be blamed for Jesus' death, and yet here, he's all for it.
My opinion only, I think Pilate is aware Jesus is the "broken man" he dreamed of (from 2:11 to 2:14) thus he cleverly pass the burden onto King Herod, just note how gravely Pilate sounded in "Trial by Pilate" at beginning when the case was thrown back at him and how desperately he fought for not killing Jesus (in this musical) because now he will be personally responsible for his death.
And the way Pilate nervously surveys the room after he ordered Jesus to be sent to Herod shows his fear and his sense of not wanting to be in this position.
MB ACTUACION! BRAVO!
Здорово!!
by now the only Russian responce :) da, zdorovo!! :) классный Пилат :)
He’s so over the top and it’s fucking excellent. He was easily the best part of the 2000 film
this is by far the best version of the musical
That's a *VEEEEERY* fitting thumbnail.
Pilate is water boarding the role, but his voice is amazing
love this...
why is M Bison screaming at Jesus
Renee’s delivery as Mary having realisation that Jesus was giving them hints about all of this.
1:32-1:38 I am in stitches, that is fucking hysterical
It's condescending and yet so funny
Where Jonathan Geoff learnt about spit singing.
1:24 looks like hes going to eat jesus 😂😂😂
Why does Pilate look like he's made out of clay?
Final boss stage
Best Pilate!
