The first time this came over the radio my older sister and I just sat there and laughed and laughed, also over the radio they said son-of-a-gun instead of SOB like Johnny says when performing it live! A boy named Sue was written by the poet Shel Silverstein, if you want to hear more like it you should check out the following: Country singer Bobby Bare Sr. collaborated with Silverstein and was one of his closest friends. His son, Bobby Bare Jr., even sang on one of Silverstein's songs in 1973. Now, father and son have curated a tribute album in memory of Silverstein. Twistable, Turnable Man features 14 performers -- including Frank Black of the Pixies, Lucinda Williams, My Morning Jacket and Andrew Bird -- covering songs written by Silverstein.
The story I heard was that the night before Johnny Cash left his home to play this gig he had a dinner party and in attendance was Bob Dylan and Shel Silverstein among others. At the end of the evening they all sat around and performed the latest pieces they were working on, Bob Dylan played Lay Lady Lay and Shel read his poem A Boy Named Sue and then folded it up and slipped it into Johnny's pocket. At the gig Johnny found/remembered the poem in his pocket and decided to perform it, in the footage of the whole show you can see Johnny turn away from the mic to tell the band what key to play in. I think the poem was on the stand in front of him. This was the first time he ever performed it and I don't think any of the band had heard it, it's also missing a verse which Johnny did add in to the studio version.
I loved your perspective. Shel Silverstein wrote this song. No doubt Johnny Cash what's the perfect person to sing it. Another great from cash is Sunday morning coming down, the story we can all relate to. Written by Kris Kristofferson another great storyteller. Love what you do brother.

Hey my man, it's me the rambling commentor..lol, LOVED that you did this song!! Not sure if anyone mentioned it, not to take ANYTHING away from Johnny's story telling, plus I know you like to give credit where credit is due too, so just an FYI, a friend of Johnny, Sheldon Silverstein, who was a poet, cartoonist, songwriter, musician, and playwright wrote this for him the night before this performance, and Johnny immediately loved it! This performance was the very first time he preformed it, if you watch back again, you'll notice Johnny glancing down at the lyrics he scribbled down so he could remember them. Later Johnny added one more verse to the beginning, and watching all your commentary along with working on my drone filmography skills, got my mind in my directors bag too, and I think the verse Johnny added would fit perfectly to what you were saying. He put it in as the second verse, and made the second verse in this performance the 3rd verse and so on......ᵂᵉˡˡ, ʰᵉ ᵐᵘˢᵗ'ᵛᵉ ᵗʰᵒᵘᵍʰᵗ ᵗʰᵃᵗ ⁱᵗ ʷᵃˢ qᵘⁱᵗᵉ ᵃ ʲᵒᵏᵉ ᴬⁿᵈ ᴵ ᵍᵒᵗ ᵃ ˡᵒᵗ ᵒᶠ ˡᵃᵘᵍʰˢ ᶠʳᵒᵐ ᵃ ˡᵒᵗˢ ᵒᶠ ᶠᵒˡᵏ, ˢᵉᵉᵐˢ ᴵ ʰᵃᵈ ᵗᵒ ᶠⁱᵍʰᵗ ᵐʸ ʷʰᵒˡᵉ ˡⁱᶠᵉ ᵗʰʳᵒᵘᵍʰ. ˢᵒᵐᵉ ᵍᵃˡ ʷᵒᵘˡᵈ ᵍⁱᵍᵍˡᵉ ᵃⁿᵈ ᴵ'ᵈ ᵗᵘʳⁿ ʳᵉᵈ ᴬⁿᵈ ˢᵒᵐᵉ ᵍᵘʸ'ᵈ ˡᵃᵘᵍʰ ᵃⁿᵈ ᴵ'ᵈ ᵇᵘˢᵗ ʰⁱˢ ʰᵉᵃᵈ ᴵ ᵗᵉˡˡ ʸᵒᵘ, ˡⁱᶠᵉ ᵃⁱⁿ'ᵗ ᵉᵃˢʸ ᶠᵒʳ ᵃ ᵇᵒʸ ⁿᵃᵐᵉᵈ ˢᵘᵉ I picture the film version of the song opening to some high school kids sittin' around the campus between classes, like out in the commons, or on the grass around some trees and picnic tables. You hear off camera someone call Johnny's character "Sue" as the camera focuses on a pretty girl looking at her socials on her phone, and she starts giggling, then the camera pans to Johnny's character, his face turns beat read, and then some guy starts laughing too, Johnny's character starts to whoop his a$$, gets a couple punches thrown and a teacher breaks it up. Next scene "Sue" is in the principals office waiting to be disciplined, and that is when we fade into a flashback scene of his dad leaving and naming him Sue. IDK, just spitballin', what do ya think?? Great reaction as usual!! ✌️💚
Loved your reaction to this - i could see your creative mind at work. One my Godfathers (have two, twins John and Paul), John was a singer/songwrite in Nashville since i was a kid - he shared so many stories with me and introduced me to all things country, blue grass, and folk. Times with him were never boring. He is 82 now (RIP Paul), still plays, and is rarely seen without his guitar. I introduce him to all the new rock and he likes anything that tells a good story, regardless of genre.
My two favourite storytelling country songs are this one by Johnny Cash , and a song by Kenny Rogers called “Coward of the County”. If you liked this one , I guarantee you’ll like the other one as well !
He actually left out a couple lines on this performance. "Some gal would giggle and I'd get red. Some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head. I tell you life ain't easy for a boy named Sue."

Hello Joe E, here's another song by Johnny Cash, if interested. "Johnny Cash - San Quentin (Live at San Quentin, 1969)" (by the channel: Johnny Cash) --Johnny Cash performed at San Quentin out of compassion for those who had made bad choices as he once had. J. Cash saw this as an opportunity to pitch his idea of recording a live album at the prison, and San Quentin State Prison was the first to respond. This song that I've suggested "San Quentin" was performed for the first time, live on the stage in front of the inmates. The song is a relatable story, with characters of which they knew all too well. I enjoyed rocking with you, thanks for sharing. peace out~
Enjoyed your comments on the video, especially your insight as a videographer. A song (not by Johnny Cash) that I always thought would be a blueprint for a movie is by Dan Seals - “Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold”. It’s a country song from 1985 and was a big hit. My sweet hubby's name is Christy. His parents were military and they moved every two to three years. Needless to say, he had to fight every two to three years to prove that the new kid wasn't a sissy. His mom didn't have as good a reason for giving him this name. She said that she thought Christopher would be too hard for him to spell.
Chicken in black is also a hilarious song, that's a funny one for real. Even if you don't make a video on that, listen to it, it'll put a smile on your face !

New subscriber, so I don't know if you're done Johnny Cash/Ring Of Fire, which he did early in his career but I am sure you have not heard Delia's Gone, which came much later in his career. Both are great songs. You should hear them both!😮😊
You should react to a song called "For As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" that was from Johnny's concept album "Bitter Tears" that told the experience of Native Americans. The song is based on the many false promises made by the white leaders and broken over and over. One hit was "Ballad of Ira Hayes" about a heroic Pima soldier (maybe Marine) who helped raise the American flag on Iwo Jima. When I had my DNA checked, I was sad to find no Native American. Some singers have championed the people: Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton (The Vanishing Race), Marty Stuart.
Cocaine blues is another fantastic story telling song. One that never gets reacted to as they are extremely rare is Drums or Ballard of Ira Hayes, same album.
Now that you are gripping the storyteller vibe, I dare you to check out Robert Earl Keen. He has some funny songs. He will make you cry. Some people can do more with a guitar and a poem than others could ever do with the latest computers and all that.
It's fun to listen to that song, If you don't feel too guilty. It also moves you, to see if it's not too late, just don't hesitate.❤. There's another prison one to go to if you want that to be the next video. You want to keep the flow? I came from Black Pegasus when you experienced HURT. If anybody hasn't seen your reaction on his site then get it from the list or go to Black Pegasus. I think Johnny Cash felt you on that reaction; and thanked you.😢
Johnny Cash is indeed a great story teller, but you gotta give credit to Shel Silverstein for the lyrics (he wrote a lot of both thoughtful and funny books and poetry-, for example The Missing Piece and the Giving Tree.
Silverstein also wrote Camp Granada, Getting my picture on the cover of Rolling stone and an article and cartoon story for Playboy about going to a nudist camp for the 1st time which is totally hilarious plus many other things. The man was a genius but not well known 3xcept to a few.

Johnny Cash was all time favorite. This is a great song and so funny. You might also want to try One Piece At A Time and also The Man Comes Around.
Chicken in black is also a hilarious song, that's a funny one for real. Even if you don't make a video on that, listen to it, it'll put a smile on your face !
Johnny Cash (25 mins to go )... power of love over love of power .... HAKAD
Power of Love?
just a saying from the church of HAKAD we push love and good vibes ... look up to the ones below=humble... HAKAD@@joeesparks7
Marty Robbins is another great country story teller. The gunfighter album
Country Music is Storytelling. Check out this story:

DawnP ur the Truth!
Crazy to think there were probably some murderers in that audience😅 great reaction Joe!
Folsom Prison Blues next! 😊
Your next Johnny Cash should be Folsom Prison Blues
"One Piece at a Time" please!
Edit and "Cocaine Blues" too
"Fulsom Prison" is your next one from the same time period.
Try "Coward of the County" by Kenny Rogers.
I seemed to remember a movie or TV show back in the 70's called A Boy Named Sue. Maybe I'm trippin
Sunday Morning Coming Down
(The network executives wanted him to change the lyrics before singing this on his show because it referred to being stoned, of course he sang it as written. )

Johnny Cash brought his wife June Carter Cash, and her family members to some of his prison performances. You might want to look into the video showing the scenario of Johnny Cash and his band to San Quentin prison. It's an interesting video documentary of the time with lots of live footage. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/PSLsfwTbo4Q/v-deo.htmlsi=Ylwa2bhWAjgnQl65
I learned this song when I was five. My daddy made me promise not to sing it at school. Or in front of grandma 😅👍
React to Folsom prison blues. Another one of Johnny Cash, he spent some time there and the prisoners r🎉enjoyed it. 😊
Here for it fam! ❤️🔥 "One Piece at a Time" next? ;-)
Sorry to repost, but if you want to hear what Johnny Cash is all about, You should check out.
Man and Black.
Sunday morning Coming Down or One Piece At A Time you should react to
