Should You Buy: An AV2HDMI Adapter - A RoXolid Review

  • In today's living room the HDMI connector is king. Unlike audio/video connectors of the past it is capable of carrying a lot of data in one simple and easy connection. This was not always the case however. Back in the dark ages, we'll call them the 1980's and 1990's, we had to suffer through low-resolution connections such as RF (gasp), Component (Shriek!) or Composite (Faint!!!).
    It is possible to connect devices from yesteryear to modern HDMI-equipped televisions. We have one such offering here in the Mini AV2HDMI adapter. Purchased off of eBay for under $15 I wanted to see if this little box was the miracle I was hoping for to help me connect my Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, Famicom, Sharp Famicom Twin, Super Famicom and Nintendo N64 via HDMI.
    The connection is super simple, just connect your AV cables to one side, the Mini USB cable to another and finally your HDMI output cable to a third. Once connected and power has been provided you're ready to go. Sort of. The systems I was trying to up-scale all ran at a naitive resolution below even today's Standard Definition Standard of 480P. To begin with the adapter is having to up-scale a pretty crummy resolution. Beyond that when I connected ANY input device to it I had a noticable audio buzz coming through my system. I tried different Mini USB cables to make sure the insulation wasn't too thin and causing RF noise, different HDMI and AV cables but the buzz was always there. Just for that fact I would say pass on this adapter, but there are more reasons yet to come.
    On my classic NES titles they were all blown out to 16:9 aspect ratio with no way to bring them back to their naitive 4:3. This lead to the graphics not scaling properly and also some pretty gnarly artifacting in the graphics themselves. The title screen on Mike Tyson's Punch Out is one of the worst offenders but everything from Super Mario Bros to Excitebike and everything in-between had weird artifacting in the graphics. When compared to my NES Classic there's no comparison, the AV2HDMI does a poor job at up-scaling.
    There is one thing that this adapter does well and that's convert AV cables to HDMI. That's about all it does well. The 720/1080 switch didn't seem like it changed ANYTHING, at least I never noticed a discernable change. If you're on a smaller TV, like 24-27" you might not notice all the artifacting I did on my 60", but even on my 48" in my media room it was distracting and, honestly, my AV cables looked BETTER on the same TV!
    If you're into retro gaming and looking to connect your old system to an HDMI port pass on these adapters. They are all over eBay and if they are anything like this one they are port adapters, not up-scalers. Don't waste your money on this, instead save your pennies and have the guys at www.game-tech.us/product/hi-d... upgrade your console for you, you won't be disappointed. Or less expensive but super fun is to pick up an NES Classic, it supports HDMI naitively!

    2 things:
    The nes does not support 16:9 natively so you're stretching the image causing blurriness
    Playing on a huge tv is gonna blow up the image making it even more worse

    Got one after seeing your video. Had gotten a tensun for almost 40 bucks. Plugged it in and it didn't work. As i was waiting for a refund i ordered a different one that was like 15 bucks. @RoXolid  7 років тому +2

      Danny C. I agree, the Kevtris kit is AMAZING, however many don't know about it or don't want to shell out the cash. I know a lot of people but these cheap converters hoping for an easy solution, just look at the comments here. My philosophy has already been if you buy cheap you buy twice.

      @@RoXolid Ya... there is unfortunately no cheap pff the shelf option that converts retro properly & without bad input lag. The only proper option is the more expensive 100+ dollar ones made specifically for retro games. Otherwise ur gonna be making some major sacrifices using these cheapo boxes.
      Hell, even if someone could improve the firmware on these lil cheap boxes to reduce the lag, that would be acceptable for casual players, even if the conversion isn't going to look good. At least it'll PLAY good!
      But alas, I dont know of any that actually reduce the lag to acceptable levels.

    Hi! Great honest review, and I already own one of these units. I use mine to watch videos from my old iPhone 4 on a pre 2016 HDMI TV Monitor . The "cable path" is an Apple 30 pin (from the old cell phone) to RCA Outputs to your RCA to HDMI Adapter to a HDMI cable into the Monitor. Not yet experiencing any weird Audio Humm or Buzz (as you've mentioned). You may see me ask this next *Video* *Capture* question across all of UA-cam.
    When attempting to capture *Analogue* *Video* from an old VCR or Camcorder, will I get cleaner better de-interlace free video coming into my computer using an HDMI Capture Card (the consumer level types like ElGato's HDMI Capture Device) and using the reviewed RCA to HDMI adapter right in between my VCR and the HDMI Capture Device? Just trying to preserve some old yet beautiful analogue memories.

    Do you have a Wii or just a Wii U?
    I'm wondering if AV2HDMI is better than Wii2HDMI, since the AV2HDMI upscales which seems to help with TV lines, where as the Wii2HDMI uses Progressive Signal settings in the Wii from the setting menu, 240p/i 480p/i, 576i etc..

    Comparing the original source to something that was cleaned up to be properly hdmi compatible isn't a fair comparison, also from experience with these kind of devices the "buzzing" is often due to using a power source that is a higher wattage than the device uses.

    • @RoXolid
      @RoXolid  6 років тому +2

      I see your point, but at the same time claiming these are true up-converters isn't accurate either. As mentioned in the video these are simply port converters and claiming that these actually do any up-scaling to 720p or 1080p is not accurate from the manufacturer.
      I thought that might be an issue, combined with faulty grounding or poor shielding around the cable itself, just like you used to get from the alternator in a car if you swapped out the car stereo and had a poor ground. I will say I have tested down to a 200mAh output adapter up to 2.1A and the buzzing is always there. I've used power supplies from Samsung, Palm, Google, Roku, even a battery charger for RC cars and trucks from Dynamite RC (DYNC3000, the Passport Ultra 100W AC/DC Touch Battery Charger) and the buzzing was always there at about the same level regardless. I think it has to do with poor grounding inside the unit itself.
      At the end of the day you can get these for $10-$50 online. Compare that to a clone NES or Super NES system which can be had for the same prices or less and do a better job I think the choice is clear, at least in my opinion.

    It's not going to be perfect 1080p. There's no possible way to upscale it perfectly. There's going to be artifacting, there's going to be ghosting and there's more than likely going to be audio distortion of some kind, BUT compared to other high end converters, this one is amazing for the price it is offered at.
    Consider these points before you tear into a 15 dollar upscaler for not being perfect.

    • @RoXolid
      @RoXolid  6 років тому +8

      I'm not looking for this to be perfect. The problem is that there are many people ordering this hoping that it will somehow magically make their 1980's Era NES or Genesis into an NES Classic where the video quality is concerned. This device is the perfect example of Garbage in, Garbage out. A 240P signal is, by all means, a garbage signal. That's unfortunately all that Nintendo systems output from the NES/Famicom up to the N64. I do still occasionally use this system and I am actually working on an update to this video with a new model from CoolDigital as we speak.
      The problem is that it is advertised as being capable of outputting 1080P. That sets an expectation that you're going to magically get 1080P out of your 240P machine. And like you said that's just not possible. This isn't an upscaler, it's a port converter as I mentioned. If you're good with that these are useful tools. If you're not good with that and are really looking for that sort of AV improvement then you really need to look elsewhere like an OSCC, Clone System or even a Framemeister.

    • @foxfan12345
      @foxfan12345 5 років тому +8

      These converters are definitely capable of outputting video correctly they just need some setup. There are a few problems in your comparison that makes this really unfair to the converter. For starters, NES classic outputs a 720p signal and not 1080p. NES games cannot be upscaled to 1080p without artifacting since there isn't an integer upscale ratio between them unlike 720p = 3 * 240p. (1080p = 4.5 * 240p 4.5 is not an integer). The other problem is that the video is being displayed in 16:9 on the TV. The video from the converter is upscaled but it can't add to the video to make up for the lack of horizontal resolution missing. Unless the TV is set to 4:3 the video will never look right since the TV will stretch things out of proportion. The NES classic adds black bars to the left and right edges to make up for this.

    For me this is a life saver, its cheap and I just want a AV ports working on my modern TV that no longer have analog inputs on it. AV/Scart/S-Video/Component/VGA those are history on my TV, its all HDMI or Display port now. Not to mention that my TV doesnt even support any resolution lower than 720p and for interlaced signal, it only supports 1080i just for the cable boxes compatibility.

    Where one of these is useful is if you have a newer TV or a monitor that only has HDMI. Many of the newer TVs do not have AV inputs anymore. I use one of these to connect my older systems to a nice new monitor that has only HDMI input. The picture quality, as you say, has some fuzziness and color smear, but then again it is only a measly $10 or so. I've been thinking of getting a better unit such as a RetroTink - but with the better picture quality comes a much higher price tag.

    • @RoXolid

      These are garbage, if you're determined to go this route, check out the CoolDigital unit I reviewed more recently. Better quality & features, but still the RetroTink IS the way to go

    To bad I found this video today. Because yesterday I bought the AV2HDMI adapter because I wanted to display a composited video signal from my old MSX2 computer on a HDMI Monitor . And as you said, its terrible. I could better have used to money to buy a used flatscreen tv with a scart connector in the second hand store.

    I have an older (10+ yr) Panasonic DVD player with composite outputs and a new (less than 1 yr) LG tv. Where this gets a little tricky is with my new (less than 1 yr) Yamaha AV receiver.
    I can connect the DVD player to my receiver with 3 composite [aka 'RCA'] cables (2 for audio, 1 for video), then from the receiver's output to TV with 1 'RCA' video cable. As the TV is wall-mounted and the cables are hidden I would rather use this 'converter' box from DVD-to-Receiver. The Yamaha receiver is connected to the LG tv with one HDMI cable. I simply choose which source to watch with the receiver's remote. I'm not playing any games and I merely want to watch DVDs on my old Panny player routed thru my Yamaha receiver. My only concern is with the video artifacting when playing a purchased DVD (not one that is burned on a computer).

    My sister bought me a Roku Express but I have not been able to have it working well. I have an old NEC plasma flat screen TV that was made before HDMI. I got a converter and the sales person recommended HDMI2AV but I am not sure if I should have got AV2HDMI instead. If I have an older TV that runs on 720p do I need an AV2HDMI OR HDMI2AV? Please tell me. I can return the HDMI2AV and get an AV2HDMI instead if I don't waste too much time.

    • @RoXolid
      @RoXolid  3 роки тому

      For your needs you'll need an HDMI2AV since you are starting with an HDMI from the ROku and going to the AV ports on the TV. You could try your Cell Phone USB power supply brick to provide power to test things out regarding if it is a lack of power from your TV's USB port.

      Possibly. The "Low Power" message has me confused however. The HDMI2AV wouldn't throw up a message like that, but the Roku could. What are you using for power for that?

      Unfortunately there's really not a cheap option out there for you. There are some Chinese Genesis/Megadrive clones out there that have an HDMI output for about $80 but they use physical carts. Unfortunately those systems just look like garbage on modern TVs because they were just never designed for screens much larger that 25"-27". It's like taking a low-quality photo and trying to make it larger in Photoshop. You can do it but it blows out and looks terrible. For the money you may want to consider a Retropie and use ROMs and Emulators or the Retron 5 and physical cartridges. I have a Retron 5 and think it works great, although the included controller is garbage.

    I bought my original NES for 60 bucks, and I'm scavenging hunt for NES games all around getting to know what the blinking red light is, what is like to buy games that aren't mentioned on the classic version, getting to know what isopropyl percentage you need to clean corrosion on your games and in your 72 pin contacts and also using the RV onto your old TV is more nostalgic then that HDMI NES Classic, having to deal with tv lags by having a good CRT Tv that is 60herts also experimenting the AV connections on my NES makes a huge quality difference. Finding out what games you can search that carry a famicom adapter. So I'd rather waste money on real retro gaming

    11:25 does this mean that if I use it to connect my Wii to my TV, it would still have that crappy 480p resolution, right? Because I have a TV that supports both HDMI and AV so this would be a waste of money.

    • @RoXolid

      I think the TV will read the signal at 1080p but it's about the worst quality you'll see.
      The HD Retrovision component cables are available through Castlemania Games for only $29.99, plus you can save 10% if you use promo code RoXolid10. Here's a link:
      castlemaniagames.com/collections/hd-retrovision/products/hd-retrovision-wii-ypbpr-component-cable-for-the-nintendo-wii?ref=RoXolid

      There's are no real differences to these AV2hdmi adapters. Those Wii/PS1/PS2 to HDMI adapters are all pretty much garbage. They introduce a lot of lag and don't have the best color accuracy. It's suggest the HD Retrovision component video cables instead, for $30 the image is vastly superior
