It's the best video that I have found that explains how to disassemble the blower, fix the recoil spring and assemble it back together. Including rewinding the spring. Very easy to follow along. Much appreciated.
Fixing a broken pull line for a buddy and this video breaks down the procedure well enough that my 12 year daughter could have done it. Clear, concise, and answers all the questions I had. Thanks bud!
Thanks for your video I was completely stumped and never would have thought to use a rope in cylinder im working on my blower now so It will be ready to work in the morning otherwise I would be without the help of my blower you are the man. It is true you learn something new every day Thanks again
MAGIC: Absolutely an amazing video. I sprung the spring out of my Homelite 26b and had no idea how to rewind it. After I watched your video, I thought this would be hard but decided to give it a try. Worked on the second attempt. Worked in less than 30 seconds. Worked so fast, I was lucky to stop the drill in time to tuck the end-piece into the spring housing. Just fantastic, thanks so much for your help. Recoil spring is back in the leaf blower and ready to go.
Great details and step by step instructions I was hoping to see a home lite backpack blower like mine somewhere on UA-cam. I’m one who REALLY NEEDS such excellent teaching videos
@@BruceAlanR when i mistakenly opened the recoil spring canister...it exploded! I tried so many ways..and I'm pretty handy..it was a pain.then I saw your video..retrieved the spring from the trashbin...wow! oh...i returned the new one from Amazon..LOL!
Thanks for the comment Jim. I wish folks who give a thumbs down would explain why so that I could improve the content. For example, do they have a different model or was the video not concise enough or are they folks who have posted similar content trying to lower this video’s ranking in the search. I guess we’ll never know. Thanks again.
The center of the spring is on a brad nail. The chuck of the drill is halfway closed, so there are 3 prongs to put on the center spirals of the spring. It’s like having a 3 pronged fork and you’re twirling spaghetti.
Thank you teacher just what l wass looking for and explained very well l congratulate you and at the same time l thank you for having explained it very well and for give us so.e of your valuable time together with you knowledge. Thank you GOD BLESS YOU.
After 20+ years my first Homelite the flywheel keyway in the crankshaft hammered out so I had to replace it. After falling for the reviews, and after trying others, I am now am back to another Homelite. If I hadn't owned a Homelite before, I wouldn't have had my higher expectations to contend with it wouldn't have mattered. The center-pull rope means it doesn't try to flip on its side when you pull the rope, and the pull diameter is large enough to not be hard to pull. They also start easy, which means the girls can start it any time they want to. The downside to the center-pull is you need to disassemble more to fix them when a rope breaks. Fortunately, that is something you seldom need to do, and they are well designed to be taken apart. I have a brand new Poulan is on Craigslist at half price, that is not center-pull, has a small diameter recoil starter which makes it try to flip on its side when you try to start it, and requires you to be a small engine psychiatrist to get it started, The Hitachi and Husqvarna start easier but still suffer have the side-pull issue. The RYOBI has issues with the catastrophic turbine failure, cold-weather operation issues, and it's 2 lbs heavier than anything else. I learned the hard way that it's not as easy to beat these little Homelites as one might think.
My pull cord was not retracting, so when I took the engine out, I noticed a who lot of debris and dirt in the rtraction unit. Since it did seem to have a working spring, I chose to flush out with water the retraction assembly while it was still in the blower housing. this worked and the retraction mechanism works just like new. I suggest you try this before pulling out the mechanism. It may save you some extra work.
I sprayed a couple squirts of WD40 into the hole where the rope goes into the housing. Mine did recoil before but very slowly. I did it while the engine was cold. I waited a day and when I tried to start it was like brand new. Saved me an hour or two of work.
This video was a blessing, I have the same model and my starter wouldn’t retract. I had to improvise another way of rewinding the spring though, I put the outside end loop in the slot, and wound the spring in toward the center, pressing the spring into the can with my fingers. My drill chuck was too short to wind it with the method shown. The tip on the ignition wires and how to remove the impeller were especially helpful. Thanks!
Glad the video was helpful! And I'm impressed you were able to wind the spring by hand... that's no small feat! I've tried doing it only to have the spring jump up and bite me. Thanks for leaving a comment!
Thanks Bruce. Used the blower for a few hours and on the 4th pull of the crank it came undone again. Luckily I bought two springs. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again
Perhaps you could make a housing using the cap of a jar or peanut butter container. I can't take credit for the spring winding technique though... learned it from another UA-camr. 😂
My starter wasn’t recoiling. What worked for me to get it to roll back inside was to spray a bunch of wd40 into the hole where the rope comes out of and give the housing a few whacks on the ground. It recoiled back into the case, but wasn’t engaging so I sprayed even more WD 40 in there and gave it a few more whacks. Good as new. No disassembly or tools needed
Ha! Sounds like your issue wasn’t the spring, but I love it when a swift whack fixes a tool. Most of the time it doesn’t fix the issue, but it does make me feel better. 😜 Were you at all concerned about spraying a flammable lubricant around a hot engine?
Very helpful. Good trick to remove the fan nut. That's where I was stuck. Who the heck gave a thumbs down? Guess there's always a percentage of ungrateful idiots.
Ha! Glad it was helpful. And yes, the fan nut is probably the trickiest part... especially if you don’t know to use a piece of rope to lock up the fan. Thanks for leaving a comment!
This mower has been kicking for about 10 years now. Always had a short cord on it after the original snapped and other minor issues with the recoil starter ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx-NCBSqqKJlyQ5_JGS_STpsFYihe7bmM3 until I finally had to open it up in an attempt to feed in a new line. I noticed it was all rusty and the coil was going but upon dismantling it was too much of a pain to get it all back in there correctly and opted to just get a new one. not sure why i waited so long to do so but it was a cheap, easy fix and it would have saved me hours of fiddling with the old rusty coil or trying to pull start and having cheap make-shift lines break in my hand during a pull. If yours is scuffed just replace it!
I should do a video on that! In the meantime, to set up the vac, pop open the fan/impeller cover and you’ll see two screw/bolt holes. That’s where you connect the two bolts of the large diameter vacuum hose tube. The curved elbow tube with the bag gets connected where the blower tube typically goes (to remove the blower tube, you need to use a flat head screwdriver to lift the tab... then twist the tube). The vacuum is simply the blower in reverse. As a blower, air gets pulled in through the impeller and pushed out the blower tube. As a vacuum, it’s the same... air gets sucked into the impeller and exhausted out the blower tube. Hope that helps!
Hmmm. Did you use the starter rope (or any thick rope) in the spark plug trick at 2:51? The starter rope should jam up the fan. The first time I tried, the nut was on pretty tightly.
If the bolt is turning, that implies to me the starter rope isn’t jamming up the fan. Take out the starter rope and try again. The fan is only held in place on the bolt because the nut has teeth.
Who'd of thought 3yrs later this video would save me lol. Thanks for being very detailed, and clear.

I’m confused, when using your drill to wind the spring, what is the drill grabbing onto to make it spin?
gary warmanen The drill’s 4 piece chuck, which normally grabs a bit, straddles the center windings of the spring.
