  • Suzuki jumps into the parallel-twin, middleweight sportbike competition with its GSX-8R. Take everything we love about the S model, add a more protective fairing to break the wind, keep the same awesome engine, and you end up with perhaps Suzuki’s most versatile sportbike.

@@user-fi4qj1fj9o Not sure, haven't rode either. But, knowing what I know after a few years and bikes that 400 will feel glacially slow after a season or 2 and a 400 is a hard sell on the used market. The 8R looks like a nice balance of possibly beginner level control but room to grow as well.

Big difference depending on your desires. I own a N400 and love it. 8R easily wheelies and is faster yet power to weight for a new rider - the N400 is a better option.
8R has better brakes / supension; 270 degree gives it a similar V-twin rumble. / more tech etc...

But numbers don't always tell the whole story, I can't imagine a 400 would feel the same as an 800 though. Then again I went from a 400 80's bike to a 90's 600 bandit, to my current 04 FZ1 liter bike so it's all relative. Numbers lie but your butt Dyno don't.

@@chrisdrummond380I wouldn't say there are any issue. I'm sure it's a reliable bike and it's fine for what it is. But Suzuki used to make real sports bikes and I'm surprised products like this are what the riders want, unless they are beginners and they are looking for their first bike. The parallel twin is a cheap engine to manufacture and that's the reason it is on so many bikes now, but it's also a boring engine. For real sports bikes I mean bikes like the GSX-R 600, 750 and 1000. It can be argued that a bike like the GXX-8R is better on the street than those bike, but it's just another segment. Suzuki try to pass this a a supersport (at least on their Italian website) but it's really a somewhat sporty street bike. It also cost 9700 € that considering the engine, brakes, and general tech on the bike seems a bit excessive, considering Honda is selling the CBR 600 RR for 2k more. If you like the bike, or this type of bikes, good for you though, I'm just not the target user for this and it's sad that Suzuki stopped producing sport bikes like before.

This bike is honestly the only real competition for the new Triumph Daytona 660, at least here in the US. The 2024 Ninja 650 can be ignored as its engine hasn't seen any improvements in years. The 2024 R7 is still super track oriented with its lack of rider aids, dated electronics, and aggressive riders triangle. The updated 2024 CBR650R apparently isn't coming to the US (apparently they're just relaunching the 2023 version with new graphics/colors), and even if it was, it'd probably be close to $2k more. Lastly, the RS660 is out of the price range of most folks just looking for a normal sporty middleweight bike, as its OTD price alone is nearly around $3-4k more than the GSX-8R and Daytona 660, not to mention the lack of dealerships, high insurance costs, and high maintenance prices.

@@racefeen22p apparently not, according to Honda themselves. The US division of Honda posted one of their news articles back in late January I think that listed all the updated bikes coming to the US for 2024. According to the list, the only sport bikes being touched are the CB/CBR1000's and the CBR600, and just with new paints. No news at all on the CB/CBR650, CB/CBR500, or CB/CBR300, as well as all of the Rebels. While every other manufacturer has had their 2024 lineup mostly available since around mid Jan, its almost March and Honda has given no news for over half of their bikes.

Agree and the 8R has 10 more Nm of torque available lower than the "Daytona" so will be snappier for everyday riding. The Daytona may pull away at 12,000 rpm on a track but the rated horse power will be useless for normal riding. Similar for the CBR650R. The R7 has aggressive but also 10 less Bhp and Nm so will be slower on and off the track. Also while the GSX spec is basic it does track well on corners and feels lighter than it is. Looks are subjective, I like the Honda, but would not buy one. Have not seen the 8R yet.

I have an 8S. The torque encourages short shifting up and late shifting down which is smooth as butter. Literally as easy as using the clutch. hardly feel it. Push hard and the up shift will be more jumpy. Change up or down while holding constant revs and it is rough, use the clutch. Aggressive down changes are short on the auto-blip rev matching but work safely with the slipper clutch. SO net net a couple of weak points but works promptly. Some say you can not hammer down two cogs quickly from speed and the box does not rev match quickly. Probably correct.

No room for the bike's HP, a zero to 60 time, a quarter mile ET and terminal speed, no braking distance from 60mph and 100 mph, no time to 80, to 100, to 120, no top speed in the Half Mile, no times for roll-on from 40 to 60 and 60 to 80 which are very informative to the everyday torque and feel of the bike accelerating on the road. Cycle World magazine once had the most exhaustive numerical evaluations. Now in the You Tube Era, there is no room in a 6 minute video for even rudimentary numbers. Great looking bike but no rebound damping changes for 9500 bucks. Ouch.

82bhp at 8,000 rpm, importantly 78 Nm of torque at 6.800rpm, 0-100kph in 3.5-4 seconds depending on who is riding it. However 150kph takes 8seconds, the bike loses puff at the top end. 200kph is 21seconds. The roll on 30-60kph or 80-130 kph is brilliant (based on riding an 8S). So everyday legal riding this bike will feel quicker than it should. Ride like a maniac and others will get there first. But real world safe riding and this bike great and feels quick and relaxed, encouraging short shifting. Brakes are better than the label with good feel. No stopping distance presently.
