Today I will be visiting my former home Town of Kalkara and explore its thermal baths. These structures at the tip of Bight in Kalkara were part of the naval hospital, which had started to be built in 1827 and which today houses the Ċentru Esplora. The structures, round rooms along the shore, were built later in the 19th century and served as baths from which the hospital offered thermal cures for British fleet patients afflicted with joint and muscle pains, as well as other related illnesses. The baths used to be filled with cold or warm seawater, which used to be heated in the pumping room after being drawn up from the sea, before passing back into the baths. Hope these structers are restored before its too late.

ANOTHER "INTERESTING" VLOG.
Been to "HM BIGHI HOSPITAL" 🏥 few times in late 60s visiting family as patients. Even went up/down that lift in the process. However, never knew about all those amazing thermal baths 🤔. Fond memories 👮 of Kalkara, Pierre, beautiful people.

Thank you Pierre for this very interesting video. We shall have a walk around there when we arrive at the end of March for a 2 week holiday, as we will be overlooking Kalkara from our holiday apartment.
I hope they can find some funding to do some work on them, back in England we love our history and a lot of money has been spent looking after the old buildings. Malta has come a long way since they joined the common market. Keep up with your lovely videos and stay safe and enjoy your lovely country.

📢Yes, thermal baths that actually existed in Malta🇲🇹, and at the tip of the shore of Bighi Kalkara, right below the Explora Centre.
That’s right, we have thermal baths that were used by the British 🇬🇧 colony for patients in need of ThermalCare.🛀 However, some of them, as you👏well inform, were lost over time whilst others suffered natural corrosion, so now, the remaining structures are 🥴AT RISK of loosing them to the sea bed & A SURE must is aTHE cry for their restoration.
These thermal🌡️baths formed part of the naval hospital which had begun construction in 1827 🏴
Even at that time, people always considered the health benefits of seawater, which is rich in minerals like magnesium, zinc, iron, and potassium, AND which ⚗️collectively offer anti-inflammatory 🔬treatment through the use of cold & hot seawater.
Wirt Artna states due that NO maintenance has being yet implemented on these historic sites, one thermal bath has already been completely lost and urgent protection must be done in a practical way by treating, restoring, and using them again.👍
Such Thermal Baths form part of the Grand Harbour panorama and can even be seen on paintings 🎨and engravings depicting scenes from the Harbour during the 1800s & 1900s.
Wirt Artna requests the local authorities🇲🇹🇪🇺 to fund & save what remains of these structures and reassuring them that intervention will NOT BE costly💰for these iconic igloo-shaped elongated structures dug & built so graciously at the island's sea level.
Currently, three structures remain generally sound but they must be protected due to heavy wear🌊 and structural instability. Two small sunken pump houses and ♨️boiler room, which worked the pumps and supplied the baths with water, are also in danger🆘🤔
Since these baths are a unique part of Malta’s Medical🩺 and Industrial History, and not to mention an integral part of OUR🇲🇹 Grand Harbour’s 🧭Historic Landscape, their restoration is crucial.

Pierre, thank you for showing us around Kalkara Thermal Baths.We have been coming yo Malta 29 times since 2007 and have seen the Baths and Lift from a distance, but until watching your video we didn't know you could walk around. We are coming in April, and thanks to you will be happy to explore.

Oh okay Pierre, something different but very well interesting those Thermal Baths at Kalkara, have never had the opportunity to visit. Unfortunately I think it's a big challenge to restore all those structures and keep evading the power of the sea and wind at that point. Still hoping something is done at least like cleaning them and make them accessible to visitors. Well, everybody must be proud of one's home town and always trying to do something good to make it better, why not! Very interesting vlog Pierre. Where the thermal baths part of the hospital for the use of patients as a form of therapy and how would they be made thermal? I found it quite fascinating that something like that would have been available back then..Again you have taught me something else about different places that exist on the island that I never knew about. Hi Pierre I always like your videos in 1970 I was 13 years old I use to go in the shelter it was in b’kara it was between valley road corner with triq PP Castagnia Pierre it is still there or not ,we did emigrated to Australia in 1972
