Today Matt takes the time to go through Carolina Coops' egg hutches and discusses why we build them this way. Our experience in building chicken coops over the year has led to many improvements that make our egg hutches the perfect place for your hens to lay their eggs!

Love the J-channel. So many great improvements from your previous coops. Grass hay is wonderful -other types are available across the country. Keep giving us chicken people all these great tips to keep our girls happy. You ROCK!
Awesome, thank you so much for the support!

Thank you!
You've got the nicest chicken coops by far and away! Oh, by the way, I've seen every one of your videos except the ones that you talk for an hour or more.
Wow, thanks! We take pride in providing the best product possible!
You guys are the best. No other company even comes close. Next level.
Thank you so much!
Put astroturf in the bottom on each nest, before adding hay.
I built a simular hutch for my girls, except that I converted it to rollout. I only have to open the back side to swap out bedding. All 16 layers currently want to use one specific box
Nice!
What is the reason behind not having the egg built inside the coop with an outside access? Love your content!
Much appreciated and thank you for the comment!
If I am understanding your question correctly, for one, it increases space in the hen house and provides easy access to collect eggs, and two, we sell our egg hutches as accessories, so for individuals who have built their own coop or individuals who currently have a Carolina Coop and want an upgrade, it is very easy to switch them in and out.
How do you deal with egg eaters? We are out of ideas and going towards roll away style.
This is a complicated conversation which we always love to have. We have also talked about this subject in great length on our podcast Video Chicken. I’ll see if I can find the link to help explain our opinion when it comes to egg eaters.
Matt/Kristen - which of the square nesting pads do you recommend instead of a buying a big bale of hay? Thanks!
We recommend these ones! Here is a link directly to our website, it is a great product:

Nice nest boxes! I have a question for you guys. I have had chickens since 2001 so I think I know what I am doing. I have used every bedding and nest box material out there. I currently use hemp bedding in the coop and love it. However, I have used hay in the nest boxes in the past and I like it but I always seem to have one or two chickens who insist on sleeping in the next boxes. How do you clean poop out of the hay? I currently have the hemp bedding in my nesting boxes and I would like to switch to the hay again, but I can never get all the poop out of the hay. The hemp is much easier to clean poop out of. Any suggestions? Oh and before you ask, yes my nest boxes are low and all the perches are higher than the nest boxes. I don't know why they sleep in the nest boxes.
I use wood shavings in my nest boxes as well as in the coop.....and use a kitty litter scoop to clean out the chicken manure. My eggs are clean and free of poop. Also, have used sawdust in the past as well and this was also an excellent source for nesting boxes and cleaning. If chickens sleep in the nesting boxes....to avoid this, place a board in front of the nesting boxes at night to keep chickens out. I did this to train my young chickens when first introducing them to the coop. Some chickens may avoid using perches if it is overcrowded or being bulky. Good luck!!
@@hilkaahlers5855 Thanks. I use a kitty litter scoop as well to clean out the poop, but when you use straw, it is difficult to pick it out. That is why I use the hemp or pine shavings in the nest boxes. I don't know why they sleep in the nest boxes. They have plenty of room on the roosts, 3 6ft long roosts for 13 hens, but all of a sudden they will pick some weird spot to sleep. One was sleeping on the roof of the coop for a while or they will decide to sleep in their run instead of the coop or in a nest box. Then they stop. I might have to block the nest boxes if I go back to straw.
The only problem I have with the egg box on my Carolina Coop is trying to gently remove a broody hen, that you don’t want to be broody! Nearly impossible to get my Cochin out. Too big to pull out and so I wind up having to push her into the coop. 😳 I try to explain that she needs a rooster in order to have babies, and it’s not healthy for her to stay in the nesting box all day! She’s not persuaded by my valid arguments. 😂 Otherwise the coop is awesome! 🥰
Thank you for this feedback! We try to listen to everyone, and comments like this help us evolve and improve as a company! Thank you!
Matt, do you guys still make the roll-away egg hutch?
Yes we do.
@@CarolinaCoopsVideos well that could have saved me some time. Too bad I have more time than money. I settled on a 12* rake for the rollout, does this sound right?
Do you need to put a feeder and water in with a hen and her chicks? I thought the hen does all the work of feeding and caring for them.
I am not sure I understand your question, chicks need food and water.
@@CarolinaCoopsVideos If chicks were hatched under a hen then I thought the hen goes and gets the food for them. Why would you need to add food and water in the nest box.
@@jasrobsny I understand. I believe Matt was referring to, if you were going to use the hen house as a brooder to raise your chicks then that would be an ideal place to put their food and water. Also, from my understanding, a hen will show her chicks where the food and water is, so if it is close, it would make it more accessible to the chicks.
@@CarolinaCoopsVideos I don't think chicks would be able to get down and back up the ramp to access the adult's food and water let alone reach the coopworx ports or water nipples so I understood that the hen would feed them in the nest especially for the first week or so.
