Starching secrets: how I starch fabric yardage

I am a prewasher. It takes all the chemicals and left over dye. You can test for bleeding by wetting a small corner of your fabric and iron on a paper towel. I would separate my colour's in my washing machine. Then I would do the starching process. We spend a lot of our time making our projects. Skipping prewashing can ruin our quilt. And waste all the time, money and energy we have put in our quilt. You can also prewash a slower way and you can see if the dye comes out. I have done thos because I also dye my own fabrics. I get dishpans from the dollar store. I put fairly hot water and a dab of dawn dishwashing soap and swish it around. I add the fabric I want to prewash and let sit overnight. It should remove any dye that is not bonded. If the water is clear, then it is not likely to bleed. If it is not, then just repeat the process. You can use colour catchers in the wash, but they can get full of dye molecules and will reach a saturation point. It can become pretty expensive running your washing machine and using colour's catchers. I have had good quality fabric bleed and ruin a quilt.

Always use the color catcher things the first time you wash. Should take care of any bleeding 😊

@@dianehuntley2493 me too. However if I have large yardage of red or black I usually serge the raw edges and then pre soak in hot water with retayne added. I don't worry about other colors if it's good quality fabric such as Moda Riley Blake Andover benartex Michael Miller etc.
if it's an off brand then I test it

I make my own starch from corn starch. 1 TBS to 2 cups water ratio. I boil for a couple minutes. I skim the film from top of pot to avoid flaky residue and allow to cool. I starch from light to dark. I did have some dark blue grunge that faded the white parts of my quilt when I did not pre-wash the backing.

I use heavy spray starch. I spray the back and press the front. That way, I don't get flakes. I also starch as I press sewn together rows. I like the feel, and I think I get better results.

I prefer to sew starched fabric. It gives me better results and I think the stitching looks so much nicer. Also, I find it easier to pin more accurate.

For the most part, I use Color Catchers with my quilts when I first wash them. However, I do check fabrics that are intense in color to see if they bleed and wash those before piecing the top. Yes, I found that many of the solids run, so they get a bath first. No, I generally do not starch and have not had any trouble cutting or piecing accurately. My next project does include a batik that feels a bit flimsy after washing. I might have to spray it with a bit of Faultless.

Hi Tammi! Thank you for another fun video! I do have some skin allergies so I do not handle any fabric that is not washed first. No more precut fabrics for me😔 only fat quarters on up. I just finished a quilt with Kona Green but washed it with Dreft and a Shout color catcher because it was going in a rainbow quilt with lots of white. I wash my fabric and store it. I use Faultless starch in a non-aerosol bottle when I get ready to sub-cut the fabric for a project. Applique projects do not like starch, lol! I really liked your use of the drying rack and loved your color choices!!!

I ❤️to use liquid starch first-improves accuracy! My fav fabric is Kona Cotton and never had any issues with bleeding-it is a beautiful, smooth cotton! 🌞

Great video! I love your cheerful voice. I've been using Faultless spray and the fabric gets stiff enough, but I hate the icky overspray. Will definitely give this a try.

I love grunge for accent in a print quilt. Also Bella solids or solid from Andover fabrics. Also connecting threads fabric is nice. I am not a fan of the Kona solids at all.
Love starching but I use best press. It's not as good as what you are using but it's good enough for me

I can’t speak to Bella solids but Kona solids do bleed in my experience as well. You will need to use color catchers when you wash; the red colors especially bleed I have found. I sometimes starch, especially if the pattern calls for small pieces and/or lots of pieces cut on the bias. In that case, I like the fabric heavily starched.

I made a 4th of July runner with Kona red, tossed in about 4 Color Catchers to help with any bleeding and surprisingly, there wasn't any red on them, just a little bit of black from some new t-shirts I tossed in with it for the first wash. The white stayed white as well.

I'm interested to know if it was the Bella Solids or Kona that was bleeding. I haven't had that problem with any Moda fabrics, so I'm wondering if Kona might have been the ones that were bleeding? Did you mix the two manufacturers' lines??

I’m rather a newbie in quilting so I’ve not been starching fabrics. When you saturate the fabric do you sting them out before placing them in the drying rack?
Hi Glenda😊. Thanks for your question. Yes, I ring out the fabric before I hang it on the drying rack. I ring it out just enough to prevent major dripping as I transfer it from the bowl to the drying rack. It’s a “gentle” ring because the more you ring, or the “tighter” you ring out the fabric, the more stretching happens as well as deeper wrinkles. Once the fabric is dry, I press it before cutting out my pieces using my AccuQuilt cutters. I hope this helps😊. I’ll see you in the next video😊👋🏽
If I notice bleeding when I starch, I treat my fabric with Retayne.

?? I'm curious was it both the Kona cotton and the Bella Solids that bled or just one of the brands. Grunge and Bella Solids are both Moda fabrics and Kona is not. Thank you for sharing your process. I stumbled on your channel while watching videos about starching.
Hi CGee 😊. My pleasure & I’m so glad you found me 😊. You know, I mixed both lines together because I was sorting based on colors. Several of you have mentioned that it likely was the Kona that bled. I didn’t have this problem with my Grunge, so again, probably the Kona. I still have some yardage left, so I’ll test them & see what happens. I’ll see you in the next video 😊👋🏽
@@TammisStitches Thank you! I bought the starch from Amazon since all we have in stores here is Sta-Flo and tested on a couple of scraps to help decide what ratio to use. I hope this helps my blocks come out better 😀. I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning more.

When i was at Walmart and they had Staflo i would buy 4-5 jugs at a time and when i heard they were going out if biz i went to Walmart and it was gone so i went online to Walmart and it was 48.00 for 2 jugs!! They were 3.50 each before so i refuse to pay that cuz its criminal and will check this one out for sure.. thank you

@@TammisStitches its the demand and for that they can charge what they want cuz quilters will pay it. I did find a recipe online thats just corn starch and water with essential oils optional so gonna try a small batch of that. I bought a weed sprayer at Lowes for 11.99 and it holds a jug of staflo and a jug of water. Shaken then with the long handle sprayer i can spray an entire FQ bundle in minutes.
Hmm. I found a similar recipe & already have the sprayer… I’ll do a video on it!! 😊
