Same. I backed it on Day 1, but cancelled my pledge by the end of the day. I really wish there was player elimination and the tension of tighter and tighter rounds increased as the game went on. Edit: I already have (and love) Secret Hitler and Battlestar Galactica.

The game is a little pricier than I would like but I've backed it for a few reasons: 1) Big fan of the film 2) I passed on both Outpost 31 and Who Goes There, as neither delivered the kind of experience I was looking for 3) None in my group are as big a fan as I, so if I don't buy it, I'll probably never get a chance to play it 4) The rules document has been released and I do see some promise to them 5) I only back a game on Kickstarter about once every 3 years (and this is year 3) 6) If all else fails, the minis and extra bits will work as great upgrades to my copy of the excellent Print-n-Play card game!
I'm in for now because 1. This looks awesome 2. The movie is one of my top 10 favorites 3. Who Goes There has a look and vibe that I feel completely fails to do justice to the theme 4. FOMO because I know as soon as I dont have it I'll wish I did. ...well see.
Ironically it was The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 that introduced me to modern board games. I just grabbed a late pledge on Who Goes There 2nd edition because it's a bit of a smaller player base so I can't see myself getting a 3rd version of the same game, though I see this is listed as 1 to 8 players which is nice. If I didn't have Who Goes There on the way I'd have grabbed this one as a low player count version FOR SURE.
I should add that I don't see a lot of difference between this and Outpost 31. Key differences seem to be allowing a discovered alien to go off on it's own. We had a game where the infected showed herself the first mission by getting caught in a lie and we spent the rest of the game using our discovered rope to bind her as we went on missions lol. She was pissed so that's probably a good add. Other than that it has the fuel feature, but it's very similar. People donate supplies for missions and go through the base.
I'm really glad I feel 'meh' about this game, as I'm a big-time fanboy of the movie, and hidden traitor mechanics. Right now I feel like I dodged a bullet by having little interest in this. A couple of years from now, I may be weeping with regret. Ahh, the perils of Kickstarter. :)
Nice take, I felt the same way about backing this. I just hope someone I know gets this so i get a chance to play it. Loved the movie and was one of my all time favorites in the genre, very interested in playing this, but not enough to back it at this price point.

I respect your opinion but this time I do not agree with you. Basically two reasons: 1. basing the evaluation on the SGs announced at the beginning of a campain is a big „cradftman‘s“ mistake. Everybody knows that during the campain new SGs are beeing released, as in this case; 2. my personal experience is that I never made it to buy boardgames I missed in a campaign at a better price at the local reseller ... and I say never... Maybe you can get in 10 years a semi-used copy at the price you suggested. Due to the above consideration, considering also that this games has quite interesting gaming mechanism, I went all-in and I will be very happy to play it with my buddies. Besides that, I am obviously a big fan of Carpenter and this film. My 2 cent
I'm seeing Outpost 31 reprint is up for preorder, Who Goes There? 2nd ed. is about to ship, and The Thing: the Boardgame is also up for preorder. Have you tried all of them? Any chance of a comparison vid? I like the theme but can only justify buying 1 of the 3 games. And yeah, you called it Alex, this game is now selling for ~$42 preorder. Even adding the miniatures (~$21) it comes out to ~$63.

Ive only been doing the KS scene for less than a year now with my oldest open back being Gladius on Mar 26 and have since then amassed a total of 7 open and paid for campaigns at over $1k in money spent. I havent factored 7th Cit yet as that will probably crest over 100 by the time its done. I imagine your queue must be pretty crazy

BoardGameCo to elaborate a bit, you cannot accuse someone in the ‘green’ part of the suspicion track. You dont look at the contagion tokens of a character in the green either. And no one goes up until the dogs get released. We didnt pull the kennel card to release the dogs the whole game, so everyone was in the green the whole game so no one could figure out by test who the alien was. The leader also draws cards and tells you who plays each card. While the collection is secret the alien in green had no incentive to sabotage anything b/c he wins by staying human and leaving on the helicopter, which he did. When the hell were we supposed to figure out who it was? We had no trigger for any problem solving.
This is so important - $110 for Kickstarter, $40 retail. Your money is also tied up until NEXT Christmas. I simply want to play a fun game. I will pass on these types of campaigns.
I backed this because I both A) like the publisher and want to back their products and B) Want to make sure that they unlock the fullest game possible. The problem with the value proposition here, is that if backers don't keep backing and keep the money coming in, it will affect the overall final game. This is not the case where they have everything unlocked and I can just wait out for retail. Then also, my groups that I game in love these types of games and having some variety with BSG, Warehouse 13 and this will be great. This campaign has been enormously responsive to and interactive with the community and has made numerous changes based on feedback. For me an easy back, but yes, I have no doubt you will be able to reap the rewards at retail down the road. Given the previous game The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 was only in print for a short while before losing the license and that game is now work some money means that this may not stay on shelves forever either.
I had thought this could be a good back given the comparisons that were floating around to Battlestar Galactica, which seems to be widely regarded as amazing. But as you point out, this does seem to be somewhat expensive given what it contains. Not a problem, that just means more money saved for when a completely unmissable kickstarter comes around... or for upping my pledge for Massive Darkness 2 when the pledge manager opens.

A year ago I was looking for Thing An Infection at Outpost 31. I could only find copies for $275+. You will probably get all your money back and more for this one.
Hi Alex, new subscriber after stumbling onto your channel a few days ago. Good stuff! Your comments about The Thing made me think of Dead of Winter with its secret objective/traitor mechanic.
Really appreciate the basic genre advice as I' haven't played a game in this genre yet and don't know of I'll enjoy it. Thankfully, it isn't one that was appealing to me anyway but this video has doubled down on that.
This game supports 1-8 players according to the Kickstarter so idk why everyone is complaining about not being able to get enough people when just themself is enough.
I would absolutely love to play a game based on The Thing. Well, a board game, I've played that video game and it was not too hot! Anyhow, the options are basically backing this, late pledging on Who Goes There? 2nd Edition or tracking down a copy of the super exclusive and expensive Mondo-game that isn't supposedly the best thing. Though the license is the strongest here, I actually wound up going in on a late pledge for WGT?2nd. It's a game of proven quality with a lot of information on it out in the world already, the price comes pretty darn close to this one, and it certifiably will hold the value. The most important thing there for me was that that is a game I can read reviews of. The lack of English reviews on this iteration of the game really drove me away from it since I can only find out HOW this plays rather than how well, into the arms of something that I know to be good. At the end my biggest regret will be that I don't get to play as Wilford Brimley in a board game and I can live with that.
Wanted it. But I'm waiting for Who Goes There? and I don't see as much a need to have both. Might pick it up someday if price is right, but I don't need this right now.
I have that game as well as I LOVE the movie. Outpost 31, to me, does a good job of portraying the atmosphere of the film better than this one and not a lot of extra things this game has. Both games are showing similar ways of doing things. Food and fuel were never an issue in the film so I don't know why you have to keep track of it now. One other thing I don't understand is why there have to be characters unlocked by stretch goals!! They should all be available right from the start , like in Outpost 31, and why are there separate tokes for the dogs? They were never running around in the film and were always locked in the dog pin. I will get this game when it goes on sale somewhere.
I love The Thing, I love traitor games, but who knows what year it will be before we get enough people together who can play this. Plus, as it often comes down to, shipping is killing it.

Sadly, this'll likely never be a pickup for me even though I like the movie. Like War games, social deduction games require too many players as a base minimum to reliably get to the table for me. I have to be extremely picky about what multiplayer games I keep as even my old favorites often go years between plays.
Yes, I totally hear that. Games like one night, can we play so quickly that we usually get extra games in. But for a longer games, I would generally prefer El grande, rising sun, stuff like that.
I backed this as I love action Hidden identity games, Like Dead of Winter, Shadows over camelot and BSG. This feels the same for me and my gaming group love these games even if they're bad, infact for some reason if they're bad they're better (I know right?) I showed this to them and explained the hidden identity role, was instant interest.

When you have "Who goes there" And "Outpost 34" which are way superior, this feels like a dumb-down version . I have tried this with my groups who play The Thing and we just can't find ourselves wanting to play this over the other 2 The Thing games
Good vid. Who Goes There may be based off the book, but I think it fails to sell the theme and the minis are a bit... meh. The Thing is based directly off the actual, iconic movie that everyone thinks of when you say The Thing. Just looking at the box and art makes me smile. I love the minis, the base looks great etc... WGT could cost 1/3rd as much,, but everytime I looked at it I'd just be bummed it wasn't the "real" The Thing. I'd also imagine The Thing won't do to bad at resell simply because it's the real deal in comparison. That said, I'm still not sure because while you can play 1-3 players, 4 seems to be the perfect amount and I've never managed to get 4 people all together at once for any game ever... plus the expansion only has standees so far. Having a core game with minis, but an expansion without would drive the completionist in me absolutely insane. I might not even be able to make myself play it. Ha!
I am still going to keep an eye on this but for now not backing. The movie I think from the 80s/90s was great but I only really have my wife usually to play with so it kind of sounds like this isn't a great idea not even counting the price.

My group played on TTS to try it out. Love the movie, theme is great, but we couldnt figure out when the social deduction was supposed to take place.

Deception: Murder in Hong Kong > every other entry-level hidden identity game.
My personal favorite is One Night Ultimate :) But Deception is pretty awesome.
How is Deception even comparable to « big board » games like BSG, Unfathomable, or The Thing? Ludicrous.

1-3 is less likely do deliver the main experience that people want out of this game.

My issue with BSG is the playtime.

I would like to see your opinion on Nexus: Boardgame, you've probably been asked a ton about this, but I respect your opinions and would be interested in your thoughts? (asking here as I don't know how to contact you otherwise)
When you have "Who goes there" And "Outpost 34" which are way superior, this feels like a dumb-down version . I have tried this with my groups who play The Thing and we just can't find ourselves wanting to play this over the other 2 The Thing games

Good vid. Who Goes There may be based off the book, but I think it fails to sell the theme and the minis are a bit... meh. The Thing is based directly off the actual, iconic movie that everyone thinks of when you say The Thing. Just looking at the box and art makes me smile. I love the minis, the base looks great etc...
WGT could cost 1/3rd as much,, but everytime I looked at it I'd just be bummed it wasn't the "real" The Thing. I'd also imagine The Thing won't do to bad at resell simply because it's the real deal in comparison.
That said, I'm still not sure because while you can play 1-3 players, 4 seems to be the perfect amount and I've never managed to get 4 people all together at once for any game ever... plus the expansion only has standees so far. Having a core game with minis, but an expansion without would drive the completionist in me absolutely insane. I might not even be able to make myself play it. Ha!
I am still going to keep an eye on this but for now not backing. The movie I think from the 80s/90s was great but I only really have my wife usually to play with so it kind of sounds like this isn't a great idea not even counting the price.

It has 1, 2 and 3 player modes as well.
I did not back this, because it is an 3 to 8 player game and my gaming group is generally not larger that 4 any one time (less now with Covid-19)
There is 1 to 3 play mode
Just to reiterate, they have modes for various player counts added to the game, so don't let that hold you back.

I've never tried a social deduction game. Normally I'd never be interested, but this may be the only theme I can think of that makes it sound cool
