While I don't enjoy 13 for the pretty the reasons you mentioned, but mostly the long crawl till party forming freedom. But I think the art direction was the best the series has ever done. And the soundtrack slaps. I can't fully judge 13-2 as I hate rpg with forced monster allies. I honestly really like Lightning Returns, though. The dresses looked awesome.

I never understood the hate FF13 got. The biggest complaint I hear/read from people is the linearity. Then please tell me how non-linear games like FF7/8/9/10 are. Spoilers: They aren't. But that's the nature of story-heavy games in general and FUCKING JRPGs IN PARTICULAR. They want to tell you a very specific story and thus lead you through the scenery from objective to objective. That's how those games are. In FF9, you go to the theater play, capture the princess, go through the forest, through the ice cave, Dahli, Lindblum, Gizarmaluke's Grotto, Burmecia,..... In FF10 you follow the path to and through the temples and trials. In an incredibly linear fashion until you get to the Calm Lands. You get the point. All of those beloved FF games open up after you get to the "big green grass open area" (FF10) or after you get a boat or an airship. It's the same in FF13. Opens up after you get to Grand Pulse. The big green grassy area. The "airship" in that game is a bunch of teleportes which, granted, are not nearly as cool. Regarding the battle system, people complained about Auto Battle making it too easy. You can literally just not use Auto Battle. What the fuck is that argument supposed to be?! Additionally, in later battles or against the optional bosses of this game, you will most likely die, if you use Auto Battle all the time. Also, thank god the remasters of the old FF games have Auto Battle in it, right? It's a saviour and awesome time save in those games. But in FF13? Fucking disgusting. I don't know why, but I feel like the people complaining about this game played a maximum of 5 minutes of it. Raising complaints about it while praising other games with the exact same problems. That being said, absolutely understand the hate Snow gets. Hope is a whiny little bitch until he develops a later in the game and Snow is on the opposite end of that spectrum: A wannabe tough guy macho man dude bro guy manly muscle man, who has that hot girlfriend bro and he's totes gonna marry her. His character develops so late, that it doesn't make him likable for me personally (unlike Hope).
This has been talked about many many times before, if you're really asking for that question in a non sarcastic way. But to sum it up, the other previous games had a lot of ways to make you feel free even in a linear story. FF7 had a world map where you could find a cave, fight new stronger too high level monsters way early, and side quests early on during the game as early as Midgar. You had hidden characters that you could miss on, and freedom of builds. This makes Gameplay free, eventhough story is linear. The same apply to FF8 or even 9. 10 has no world map, but you are free to do blitzball, backtrack (you can't in FF13) and take the boat, FFX also unravels it's gameplay systems way earlier, and let you play with them a lot more. Ultimately you just have to understand the complaint of the people and not be defensive about it. Between you and me playing FF XIII on release, the chance his 90% of our playthrough is similar. You had the same characters has me, visited the same places in the same order, and probably used the same "builds", because there is none. You don't even unlock the freedom of paradigm before the endgame or close to it. FFXIII was viewed as bad, even if it has many good to incredible things, because it was (probably with FFXII) one of the first mainline titles to have obvious incredible flaws like that. Some people don't like Tidus design or voice, some people don't like that Garnet is not part of the team very often, or the FFVIII junction systems, but those are opinions. FFXIII has big flaws and it's NOT based on opinions. You can love it, I personally love the systems, but hate it for blocking me for the whole game to play with them.
It's not about the linearity, it's all about the "it gets good once you get to Gran Pulse" Which is CHAPTER 11. All the FF you mentioned still provided some degree of freedom even in the earlier parts. FF7 after Kalm, FF8 after Dollet, ff9 After the Evil Forest, FFX after Luca. To get to Gran pulse? 20-30 HOURS...
You're technically right, but the difference is that the other games mask it better. When done right, a linear story still lets you feel like you "discovered" your way through the game, whereas most of FFXIII can be rightfully described as a "corridor simulator". Don't get me wrong, I greatly enjoyed FFXIII (and Lightning Returns), but I think the criticisms are also well deserved.

My favorite Garb is Loyal Servant with: -Buster Sword -II Nome Della Rosa -Passionate Corsage （Adornment） I like the color ratio, a 7Black;2red;1Gold (oh and lightning pink hair) Sometimes I put a pumpkin head on it to make the cut scene funny, especially when she hit Snow in the cutscene.
I love 13 its a great game its not a perfect game but what is? The characters were great designed, the weopens were cool, the graphics was beautiful the music is one of the best soundtracks in games and i liked the battle system and the leveling up system.

Her -ra buffs ALONE should keep her out synergist role out of that tier... hope and lightning trying to be sentinels should be the only things in the worst tier... why tank when you.... actually don't tank? Also, vanille's commando role is heightened by the fact that she should be using ruin, the magic based commando spell. that's already a red flag right there too.... Sure hope has high magic but he doesn’t has Adrenaline in his Commando Lightning is the best all round unit with her roles. Downside is that her Saboteur doesn’t have Slow and Daze. Sentinel is somewhat good but still easily die if not careful. This game isn’t that hard. Just dead ass boring farming for Platinum Ignot, Dark Matter and Trapehozedn. The funny thing of ff8 and 13 is people will agree it’s bad and carry on with their lives but the fans will pop out every so often unprompted to tell everyone how great the games are. They aren’t, but it’s cool they get so much love from their fans.
In all fairness to 8 and 13, as a stand alone game they are both well above average. Ff8 has its reasons for not being a fan favorite but compared to the MANY other rpgs at the time it’s a good game. Ff13 was their jump into HD and it’s still a pretty good looking game for 15 years old considering 15 years before that you were playing on a Super Nintendo or Sega. It’s a shame the game takes so long to open up.

I tried a second play through on the 360 now long back and I don't understand how I completed 13
Tbf, finishing a bad or ok game isn’t that hard, but replaying them is a lot harder since you know all the game has to offer already.
The only 2 characters I liked personality wise were fang and lightning. That said, I think I need to play through this trilogy again.
