- Hey folks, welcome back. Today I'm going to make my case for why Erdrick, main protagonist of Dragon Quest III deserves to be a playable character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. It all comes down to how influential Dragon Quest III is and how much it means for the Nintendo brand. I'm honestly surprised it never happened yet. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for 500 subscribers!

@@thebuttedemonslayer Learn more about Dragon Quest. It's a better RPG series than Final Fantasy. You actually have to think your way through battles and all your spells and everything matters, unlike final fantasy where you get 100 spells and there's clearly one winner.
DQ is a lot more like D&D where you feel like all your choices really matter. PLAY IT

I just hope Akira Toriyama realizes his success (in terms of designs) lies far beyond Dragon Ball. One glance at his work, and you could tell that man created it.
Hell, he's the reason I got into this series AND Chrono Trigger, since I was originally a Dragon Ball fan.
Chrono Trigger is godly.
Dragon ball wasn't even his first big hit you can see a whole bunch of cool artwork from him in Dr Slump and his other one offs.
I think the conception that hes only known for Dragon Ball really applies only to the West; Dragon Quest is HUGE in Japan and Chrono Trigger is widely beloved

I’ve never played a dq game, and i’m still perfectly fine with him being in smash.
And he along with Banjo Kazooie are confirmed.
The fact that the game is so popular in Japan that people got arrested skipping school to buy the game tells you enough, Erdrick deserves to be here as much as anyone
And besides, he turned out to be objectively the most unique sword character
Its cuz he's yet another anime sword boy.
It took sakurai until byleth to realize that people like weapons other than swords, so they also gave him an axe, bow and spear, and even a sword that stretches.
OmegaChase1002 he’s not a sword boy like Ike, chrom, or Roy etc. are though. He has a sword but he has the most unique move set in the game.

@@LOSTLEAD8R probably because they've played the KH series more. There's nothing wrong with that. Just because someone prefers something, it doesn't mean there's something wrong with that. Drgaon Quest deserves some representation on Smash, but it wouldn't hurt to also have some original KH charchters on there too.
@@LOSTLEAD8R that's not really a bad thing I'm sure sakurai would make erdrick really cool and I'm sure dragon quest deserves a spot in smash but tbh I'm not really a fan of dragon quest sure it has art by akira toriyama and that's really really cool and the games are really well done butd love to have sora as well, and probably a bit more than erdrick he's an iconic character with a loveable franchise adored by fans who've been around since they were just children and probably now young adults still waiting on a game that at one point almost seemed like a myth

Since Erdrick's name has been poppin' up more and more lately due to Smash leaks and more recently the datamine, a lot of opinions have been poppin' up regarding a character...most western fans don't really know or understand the significance of the inclusion if he really is coming to it. So, I really do think this will help people realize how important his inclusion truly is.

I wouldn't say Cloud is totally uncalled for being a Playstation character, again Final Fantasy deserved a spot in Smash, and since Cloud is pretty much the most famous FF character next to Tidus from FF10 and Noctis from FF15, it was fitting to have the character that broke from Nintendo consoles join the battle, thus generating loads of hype and of course, money. I'm not so sure if Erdrick would be as profitable, but still he'd be a great addition.
I respect this, but I think Lightning is way more popular than Tidus

Not every character is added to Smash due to popularity. Some are there due to simply adding something new or unique to Smash's roster. Ike, Shulk, Game & Watch and Ice Climbers come to mind.

I just hope that if Erdrick makes it into Smash that the DQ series will get more popular, DQ VIII is my favourite game of all time and I have it on both PS2 and 3DS as well as the Guide. I also have DQ IX and XI and XI sits at the no. 2 spot on my favourite games of all time.
Honestly with all the leaks and videos like this, the series is starting to get some attention so even if he doesn't get added this could still help the series in the long run.

Nobody in the West gives a shit about dragon quest, and he'd be Big literal who in Smash Bros. No one would buy him, because nobody wants him. The West wants Geno or sora, not that nobody.
@@1trevor30 That nobody is the reason we have jrpgs to begin with plus Smash has added characters that weren't known to the west before so your argument is invalid. So wether people want him or not it doesn't change the fact that DQ has more then earned its place in something like Smash bros.
Christian Lopez uhhhh, may be they added those characters to get the Japanese people in smash which ended up becoming a success. Also, yeah, Xenoblade was also put in but that was a modern Nintendo franchise that barely anyone knew about, so putting him in smash would get people worldwide into his game.So, why add a character that would bring barely any Japanese people and western people to smash and is owned by by a company that can’t even return the favour for putting Cloud in smash. At this point I don’t even think we are even getting a square rep since I think right now Nintendo hates square for not returning the favour for putting Cloud in smash and giving Cloud only the bare minimum for FF representation. Idk man. I don’t think a DQ or even a squarenix rep is possible to put in the game. I may be very vocal right now but still, you have to see why he may not make it in the game and I want to ask you this question, what will your reaction be when he isn’t going to be a part of the fighter pass?
@@gijoe820 Im fully aware that we may not get another Square rep but if we are getting another one then I think DQ makes the most sense, granted I won't complain if we get Sora or someone else but the thing is DQ has been a series thats had much stronger relationship with Nintendo more so then FF not to mention its importance to the jrpg genre and massive popularity in Japan, so if there is any franchise that Square or Nintendo I feel would budge on its DQ, not to mention that they actually have DQ games coming to switch so marketing by adding a character in Smash would actually be a smart move; Ive also heard the creator of the series claim that its becoming something of an urgent matter for DQ to start gaining a bigger fanbase outside of Japan sense the core audience is getting old. As for the Cloud thing Im not sure, Ive heard so many reasons on why we have so little representation that personally I stopped caring.
Christian Lopez yeah, you have a point, but if it has a huge following in Japan but not anywhere else then what is the point of putting him in since all third-party characters are popular everywhere. You want proof that DQ is struggling outside of Japan, look at DQ 11s sales like three quarters of the sales are from Japan and sold only one million worldwide (not including Japan). So right now DQ ain’t doing that well for a game series that is one of Enix’s top IPs. The critics even say that it is hard for DQ to get more fans into their games unless they are big rpg fans. I also have a hard time thinking what DQ would bring to the table for Nintendo. Like, with Snake, Ryu and Megaman they are bringing their games to nintendo consoles and with Cloud, yeah you know how that ended. With DQ games already on nintendo consoles, it makes me wonder what will DQ bring to smash. With someone like Sora, they could bring KH games to the switch or even Lara Croft who could bring TR games to the switch, or putting a Mario rpg lotss Rep to smash could bring back the old formula for Mario rpgs and could give them some spot light and also bring back the old characters which would also mean more games to the switch. Actually, nevermind, Super Mario rpg lotss is a bad game and anyone with something associated with Mario rpg on their channel are losers, so maybe not that but still Sora and Lara could bring more stuff to the table for the switch. Also, yeah there are some DQ games coming to the switch in 2019 so I guess it is all up to the future.
Dragon quest is hugely influential too! Did you know it even influenced pokemon’s trading system? Satoshi tajiri couldn’t get the rare drop of the mad cap on his save, while his friend childhood friend ken sugimori got two and was unable to share the spare with him. Really goes to show what a widespread influence the series has!
I haven’t heard that story! Not surprised though, pretty much every JRPG owes a lot to the original. It really kicked off an entire genre.

I heard even Dark Souls took some inspiration for its online play with them even saying they wanted to recreate the feeling of playing the old DQ games in the sense of having dark and high fantasy elements while also having players remember the map in there heads.
In my opinion, Edrick is more deserving than Sora.
Most of the haters are just using excuses"another generic anime character". I dont get this excuse when sora mostly is a swordman(his keyblade acts like one), the only non-swordman square-enix rep i could of is Lara Croft from Tomb Raider.

Destroyer Tank No one. But I’m going to disagree. Sora is no generic swordsman by any means. He can transform, and all the drive forms are very unique. It can sorta function like Jokers Arsene. He has magic, just like The Hero, and the magic can be as bland as Thunder to altering gravity and time itself. Sora can fly, use flowmotion, and etc as recoveries or transportation. And his final smash could be using an Attraction Flow, which there are a variety of- such as trains, roller coasters, and boats. Sora is very unique, and if you say otherwise then you probably haven’t played KH. Though, The Hero isn’t bland either, and is also a great use of a slot. Though you can’t hate on Sora because, he’s probably one of the most unique swordsmen ever.

GOD I totally agree dragon quest is a rpg staple in japan and after beating the latest entry in the series it would be a great time to surprise us with Erdrick as one of the mystery dlc fighters!

If Erdrick does get into smash, I hope that his Alt colors reference the other heroes from the other games such as a green alt to represent Arus from Dragon Quest 7 and a brown one representing Nine.
I also hope for this as well. Either that or a Bowser Jr. situation where the heroes were the alt costumes but that's probably too much.
They should do one for the hero of XI, since he's the original Erdrick.

Just finished my first dragon quest that being XI, and I agree with this video, Erdrick should be in smash. Also I wanna get every dragon quest that I can get my hands on. All that aside I really want Erdrick in smash.
If you don't mind digital, the mobile ports are a great buy just to play the series.
The 3ds is your best bet then! 4-9 are all on it! Wouldnt suggest getting 6 because the high it has nowadays and it's not the "best"

4 or 5 are really good ports, and 8 on the 3ds is also extremely well done. If you don't mind the older ones, 3 is a given, but don't do like I did and take 3 jesters. FOR THE LOVE OF THE ALMIGHTY DO NOT TAKE 3 JESTERS

I think if he makes it to Smash, Dragon Quest will definitely pique people's interests. The series has always done a good job of that.
This vid just showed up in my recommended so I figured to give it a watch.
Honestly, as someone who's only played DQXI, I don't have a very large connection to the series.
But your argument certainly holds a lot of water, and I'm convinced. If Erdrick did make it, I would be pleased. Being so big in Japan, I'm also surprised there's no representation.
Hopefully we can get some remastered versions of early DQ games on the Switch!

Also, Erdrick and his lineages are THE Japanese Western-styled high fantasy "Heroes". Have you ever heard of "勇者(Yuusha)" in one of those anime? It's about the archetype which solidified by them.

that loves Earthbound/Mother series wanting to play it in the west...
Yeah it's way long past due for it's localization.
ANYHOW isn't about Mother 3, it's about smash/DQ and yeah...
The potential of DQ being represented in Smash with Erdrick is...amazing
for every DQ fan out there, in japan and overseas!
I don't know much about DQ to be honest, don't blame me or others for not knowing...
But still just like with "Fire Emblem" in 2001 with Super Smash Bros. Melee (a game not known or released at all in the west until a year later with Fire Emblem on the GBA, then many years later becoming a smash hit series, esp. with the 3DS release of Awakening), the representation of Erdrick will bring forth a lot of attention to the DQ series, in terms of those who are new or know little or a lot about it!
If he becomes a popular choice, who knows what will happen with DQ in terms of "recognition" in the west from hence forth. I'm excited for it if it happens hehe!
I would love to see Psaro, Alena, Carver, or Terry represent Smash. Also the DQ5 hero (is his default name Abel?), Zona, Bianca, and DragonLord would be awesome as well. So even if people don’t want Erdrick, DQ has a lot of choices.
I would be okay with ANY DQ character. DQIII just seems likely. Also I believe the DQV hero’s canon name is Madason.
Also, this might be overpowered, but I would love, for like example, if they use DQ4 hero/heroin, that the final smash would be that 3 of Alena, Kiryl, Borya, Meena, Torneko, Maya, and Ragnar all pitch in to fight.
So for DQ3 hero/heroin, you get 3 of Warrior, Fighter, Cleric, Mage, Thief, Dealer, Jester, and Sage to come join you in fight for Final Smash.
I hadn't considered this until I happened upon your video, but what a fantastic idea! Dragon Quest deserves to be honoured in Smash far more than a lot of series that currently are being, and what a fantastic character to do it with... hopefully Nintendo could be kind and allow the other costumes to be other Dragon Quest heroes (similar to Bowser Jr.) - one can only dream.

Erdrick would be a great choice for Smash, DQ having representation would be great since outside of being the father of JRPGs and also being apart of the NES legacy, the series itself would have great representation if Square Enix is willing to lend enough content
imo, i feel like Square wanted a new DLC character as a compromise for Cloud being in base roster, Crono or Erdrick would definitely be their top choices

A Fellow Dragon Quest fan huh, the first Dragon Warrior was my very first RPG I have played the I moved on to Final Fantasy and I love them both, nice to see somebody give a lesson on the games past hero's and more on them.

If you think about it for a moment, it really doesn't make any sense that Erdrick (Roto) isn't already in Smash. In Japan he is far more important than half the Smash cast, could have dozens of possible attacks ranging from normal spells to special moves seen in newer Dragon Quests and would also raise the awareness of the series in the west.

After putting in close to now 200 hours in DQ XI, I’m SO excited to have Erdrick in Smash. It would be dope if they gave him alternate appearances, including The Luminary and/or Erdwin, or the heroes of DQ I and/or V, with their iconic designs.
Dude thank you so much for explaining why Dragon Quest has earned its chance to be in Smash. I've been trying to point allot of the same points out myself. Dragon Quest is just such an iconic and impactful series...and its rich history with Nintendo only adds to how much the game has earned a chance to be in Smash. Even now I would bet Nintendo is going to publish Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Dragon Quest X S here in the west. Nintendo has always seemed to push and want to promote the series...so it makes so much sense to have it in Smash.
I've been expressing my excitement for years at the idea, and it is exciting it might finally happen.

I'll be very happy to have Erdrick in Smash. Love the original 3 DQ games, and 3 is PROBABLY the best? Hard to pick between 1 and 3, honestly. There's also rumors that it'll be a slime instead, which...cool? Seems a little jokey, though.
On another note, Sora fans are really starting to sour me on the idea of having him in the game. Seriously guys, chill out. I'm seeing literal harrassment of Nintendo reps over this, and it's not okay. Besides, if Sqeenix wanted Sora in Smash, they would've preferred to have him in BEFORE KH3 came out. It's probably too late now. There's also A LOT of disrespect for Dragon Quest flying around from you guys, which absolute BS, since Kingdom Hearts (and JRPGs in general) probably wouldn't even EXIST without Dragon Quest.
